Abusivismo e capitale sociale
2007
Unauthorized building is mostly concentrated in the southern regions of Italy and regards every social class. It often involves political interests at election times. Due to the distinctiveness of its distribution on the Italian territory, unauthorised building raises complex issues of a sociological, anthropological, political and legal nature concerning public spirit, the relationship that the citizen has with institutions and with lawfulness, the means through which political consensus is aggregated, and the capacity of the state to ensure governance through laws. Agrigento is an emblematic case, not only because of the diffusion of the phenomenon over time and space, or for the relevanc…

Biodiversity, evolution and adaptation of fungi in exstreme environments
2013
Fungi play irreplaceable roles for ecosystem functioning. They may adopt different life styles, for example saprotrophs, symbionts or parasites: some species are cosmopolitan with a wide distribution and others, thanks to they ecological plasticity, may adapt to harsh environments precluded to most of life forms. In stressing conditions, their role is even more crucial for the recycling of organic matter or favouring nutrients uptake. When the conditions become really extreme and competion is low, fungi focus on extremotollerance and evolve peculiar competences to exploit natural or xenobiotic resources in the particular constraints imposed by the environment. This paper focuses on three di…
Acoustic characterization of the ancient theatre at Syracuse
2008
The ancient theatre at Syracuse, the largest open air theatre in Sicily, experienced many structural changes along its history. Today its very renowned drama festival attracts visitors from all the world that fill the entire cavea: customized seats accomodation and a prominent stage play an important role in the theatre acoustics. Because no data were available in literature on its acoustical perfomance a measurement session was carried out by our team in the framework of a wide research project on ancient theatres acoustics in the modern use. From data recorded "room criteria" parameters have been evaluated together with spectral analysis in order to gain a deeper information on the acoust…
L'acqua non è mai la stessa. Le acque nella tradizione culturale dell'Asia
2009
L'acqua è l'elemento che accomuna i contributi inclusi nel volume che se ne occupano in varie tradizioni culturali dell'Asia. The papers included in the volume are dealing with the element of "water" in various cultural traditions of Asia.
Acremines A-F, novel secondary metabolites produced by an endophytic strain of Acremonium sp., isolated in grape leaves infected by Plasmopara vitico…
2005
Six novel metabolites, acremines A–F have been isolated from agar cultures of a strain of Acremonium sp. Their structures and stereochemistry were elucidated using a combination of 13C and 1H homo and heteronuclear 2D NMR experiments and X-ray analysis. Acremines A–D inhibited the germination of sporangia of Plasmopara viticola.

Nitrous oxide emission from a moving bed membrane biofilm reactor: the effect of the sludge retention time
2016
The aim of the present study was to investigate the nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from a University of Cape Town (UCT) moving bed membrane bioreactor pilot plant. An experimental campaign was carried out during 60 days with three different sludge retention time (SRT). The pilot plant reactor was provided of funnel shape covers that guaranteed gas accumulation in the headspace. The results highlighted that N2O concentrations significantly increased when the biofilm concentrations increased within the aerobic and anoxic compartments. Furthermore, results have shown an increase of N2O with the decrease of SRT. Moreover, the MBR tank resulted the key emission source (up to 70% of the total N2O …
Aeration tank and secondary clarifier as one system. in "Activated Sludge Separation Problems: Theory, Control Measures, Practical Experieces. Eds. R…
2017
Traditionally the activated sludge process is treated as two stage process. The first stage (aeration basin) is described in terms of biological processes while the description of the second stage concentrates on processes of biomass separation and thickening. The modern approach to the activated sludge process looks at both the biological and the separation stage as one system. The aim of this chapter is to explain the interactions between the two parts of the activated sludge system.
