Infecciones por clamidias
2007
Enhancer blocking activity located near the 3′ end of the sea urchin early H2A histone gene
1997
The sea urchin early histone repeating unit contains one copy of each of the five histone genes whose coordinate expression during development is regulated by gene-specific elements. To learn how within the histone repeating unit a gene-specific activator can be prevented to communicate with the heterologous promoters, we searched for domain boundaries by using the enhancer blocking assay. We focused on the region near the 3′ end of the H2A gene where stage-specific nuclease cleavage sites appear upon silencing of the early histone genes. We demonstrated that a DNA fragment of 265 bp in length, defined as sns (for silencing nucleoprotein structure), blocked the enhancer activity of the H2A…
Modelo empírico para la determinación de clorofila-a en aguas continentales a partir de los futuros Sentinel-2 y 3. Validación con imágenes HICO
2014
[EN] Chlorophyll-a concentration is one of the main indicators of inland waters quality. Using CHRIS/PROBA images and in situ data obtained in four lakes in Colombia and Spain, we obtained empirical models for the estimation of chlorophyll-a concentration, which can be directly applied to future images of MSI Sentinel-2 and OLCI Sentinel-3 sensors. The models, based on spectral band indices, were validated with data from the hyperspectral sensor HICO, onboard of the International Space Station.
Preliminary Analysis on Correlations between Spatial Distribution of Chlorophyll-a and Experimental Data of Biomass in the Strait of Sicily
2010
This study, using both remotely sensed and measured in situ data, is directed to the analysis of the correlations between the chlorophyll-a concentration and the biomass of sardines and anchovies acoustically evaluated in the Strait of Sicily. This work, inter alia, shows the usefulness of remote observation of seas in determining possible relationships between fish stocks and some oceanographic parameters (Sea Surface Temperature, Chlorophyll-a, Zooplankton).
First Report of Tomato torrado virus Infecting Tomato in Italy.
2010
In 2009 and 2010, approximately 2% of plants had disease symptoms, including initial leaflet chlorosis that later developed into necrotic spots and general necroses along the leaflet. Fruit production on affected plants was substantially reduced and necroses were also present. Total RNA was extracted from five symptomatic plant samples using the RNeasy Plant Mini Kit (Qiagen, Hilden, Germany) and analyzed by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR with specific primer pair: TR2F (5′ GAAGGACGAAGAGCGACTG 3′), and TR2R (5′ AAGGTAGGTATGCGTTTGC 3′) (1). The primers amplified a 575-bp fragment within the coat protein Vp23 of Tomato torrado virus (ToTV). No RT-PCR products were observed when water or asym…
Occurrence of tomato pith necrosis caused by Pseudomonas marginalis in Italy.
2010
Dipartimento di Scienze e Tecnologie Fitosanitarie. Universita` degli Studi di Catania. Via Santa Sofia 100, 95123 Catania, ItalyIn 2006, a serious outbreak of tomato pith necrosis (TPN) with approxi-mately 90% disease incidence was observed in two greenhouses in Sicily.Adult fruiting plants showed chlorosis and slight wilting of shoot apices.Internalstem browning alongthe entire length oftheplant was observed.Pith tissues were soft but not rotted or hollowed. Only fluorescent colo-nies developed on King’s B medium (KB) after isolation from infected tis-sues. Ten pure isolates were all levan, oxidase, potato soft-rotting andarginine dihydrolase positive and were negative for tobacco hypersens…
An Investigation of the Seasonal Pattern of Mannitol Content in Deciduous and Evergreen Species of the Oleaceae Growing in Northern Sicily
2002
In several species of the Oleaceae, mannitol, already present at considerable levels, accumulates in response to stress. This family comprises both deciduous and evergreen species, and we investigated the role of mannitol in deciduous malacophyll and evergreen sclerophyll species growing under the same conditions in the field. The relationship between mannitol content and changes in rainfall or temperature was also studied. The mannitol content of leaves of Fraxinus ornus L., F. angustifolia Vahl., Olea europaea L. and Phillyrea media L. was determined by gas chromatography. Leaf samples were collected once a month for 1 year. In the two ash species, the seasonal pattern of mannitol content…
Partial vinylphenol reductase purification and characterization from Brettanomyces bruxellensis
2008
International audience; Brettanomyces is the major microbial cause for wine spoilage worldwide and causes significant economic losses. The reasons are the production of ethylphenols that lead to an unpleasant taint described as 'phenolic odour'. Despite its economic importance, Brettanomyces has remained poorly studied at the metabolic level. The origin of the ethylphenol results from the conversion of vinylphenols in ethylphenol by Brettanomyces hydroxycinnamate decarboxylase. However, no information is available on the vinylphenol reductase responsible for the conversion of vinylphenols in ethylphenols. In this study, a vinylphenol reductase was partially purified from Brettanomyces bruxe…
Pleurotus ostreatus volatile aroma compounds identified from fruit-body and from mycelium grown in submerged and solid-state cultures
2003
Comparative analyses of volatile aroma compounds of the Pleurotus ostreatus JMO.95 fruit-body and its corresponding mycelium grown in liquid, on agar surface, or on solid support cultures have been carried out by dynamic headspace concentration using GC/MS and GC/sniffing. The aroma of the fruit-body was due essentially to the presence of octan-3-one and, in a lesser extent, to the presence of octan-3-ol. Other compounds, such as oct-l-en-3-ol, oct-l-en, 2-methylbutanol and a-pinene were also present in low concentrations. The comparison of the aromatic spectra of the fruit-body with the aromatic spectra of mycelia obtained under different culture conditions indicated that the main aromatic…
Aerobic granular sludge treating shipboard slop: Analysis of total petroleum hydrocarbons loading rates on performances and stability
2018
Abstract The work focuses on the feasibility of treating slop with aerobic granular sludge. For this purpose, a 3.5 L granular sequencing batch reactor was activated and it was monitored for 156 days. The experimental campaign was divided into two periods, named Period I (100 days) and Period II (56 days). Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) concentration in the slop was, on average, equal to 6.8 ± 1.5 mg L−1 and 13 ± 1.5 mg L−1 in Period I and Period II respectively. The obtained results during the first experimental period indicated that about 80 days were required to reach steady state with mature granules, when TPHs removal efficiency was approximately 90%. The results indicated that both…
