Bisphenol A removal from water by biomass-based carbon : Isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics studies
2020
Biomass-based carbon was modified and used as an efficient bisphenol A (BPA) sorbent. The simple and environmentally friendly modification method produced sorbent with a capacity of 41.5 mg/g. The raw material was modified with FeCl3 (Fe-CR), treated with hydrochloric acid (H-CR) or modified with CaCl2 (Ca-CR). Batch sorption experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of the initial pH, sorbent dosage, temperature, and contact time on BPA removal. BPA removal with modified carbons was notably higher than that with unmodified carbon. All sorbent materials exhibited very high sorption capacities and compared favourably to materials reported in the literature. Several isotherms were ap…
Computational Analysis of n→π* Back-Bonding in Metallylene-Isocyanide Complexes R2MCNR′ (M = Si, Ge, Sn; R = tBu, Ph; R′ = Me, tBu, Ph)
2013
A detailed computational investigation of orbital interactions in metal–carbon bonds of metallylene–isocyanide adducts of the type R2MCNR′ (M = Si, Ge, Sn; R, R′ = alkyl, aryl) was performed using density functional theory and different methods based on energy decomposition analysis. Similar analyses have not been carried out before for metal complexes of isocyanides, even though the related carbonyl complexes have been under intense investigations throughout the years. The results of our work reveal that the relative importance of π-type back-bonding interactions in these systems increases in the sequence Sn < Ge ≪ Si, and in contrast to some earlier assumptions, the π-component cannot be …
Green energy products in the United Kingdom, Germany and Finland
2014
In liberalized electricity markets, suppliers are offering several kinds of voluntary green electricity products marketed as environmentally friendly. This paper focuses on the development of these voluntary markets at household level in the UK, Germany and Finland. Since there are already existing renewable energy policies regulating and encouraging the use of renewable energy, it is important to consider whether voluntary products offer real additional benefits above these policies. Problems such as double counting or re-marketing hydropower produced in existing plants are identified. According to our study, the demand varies between countries: in Germany the number of green electricity c…
Planning for an environment-friendly car
2000
During the process of developing a new product, consciously or unconsciously, a number of decisions are made that affect the environment, thus making a company responsible not only for the technical performance but also for the “environmental performance” of a product. This research paper broadly speaks about this development process and lists the various tools available to the modern decision maker for balancing the ecological, economical and technological aspects of production. The focus of this paper is on the environmental issues in the automobile industry and environmental impacts presently associated with the automobile life cycle. The paper reviews existing tools and opportunities fo…
Are electric vehicles eco-friendly products? A review from life cycle and sustainability perspective
2021
Industry, especially the automotive industry is permanently changing and adapting to the external and internal factors. The appearance of the new types of vehicles – electric vehicles, is a big and important step not only regarding the evolution of the product, but also regarding the advantages of reducing environmental impact. It is promoted the idea that an electric vehicle generates less direct emissions in use phase compared with a conventional one. If we limit to this, we could say that we are dealing with an eco-friendly type of vehicle. The question is, can we extend this idea to the other stages of the life cycle? What about the sustainability of the industry? This article highlight…
Analysis of carbamate pesticides and their metabolites in water by solid phase extraction and liquid chromatography: A review
2001
Carbamates are an important, broad class of pesticides that are used extensively as insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides. Sensitive, economical, fast, and environmental friendly procedures are constantly developed to investigate their residues in water samples. The state of the art in methods based on solid phase extraction (SPE) and liquid chromatographic determination are examined here. SPE is presently the most extended method for preconcentration of carbamate pesticide residues and their transformation products from water samples. Advantages and limitations of alkyl bonded-silica, and polymeric sorbents, carbon, and mixed-phases in off-line and on-line procedures are discussed. Beca…
Electrochemical Deoxygenation of Aromatic Amides and Sulfoxides
2014
The electrochemical deoxygenation of a broad range of aromatic amides was achieved under mild conditions on lead cathodes. Under the optimized reaction conditions, acetal, thienyl, and ether moieties are tolerated. Furthermore, the reduction protocol can be applied to aromatic and aliphatic sulfoxides to obtain the corresponding sulfides. For both aromatic amides and sulfoxides, the deoxygenation reaction ensues without the use of expensive catalysts or hazardous reducing agents. Owing to the high selectivity of the process, simple extraction is sufficient to isolate the product from the substrate. The straightforward purification protocol, the coformation of water, and the use of electric …
Potential of Baltic Region Peat in High Added-value Products and Environmentally Friendly Applications - A Review
2021
The present review is dedicated to using of peat on the example of fen peat in high added-value products and applications. Mainly, but not limited, last decade literature was analysed from the perspective of innovation potential of peat applications in environmental technologies on examples of studies from the Baltic Sea region. Paper covers a wide range of applications of peat products started from agriculture to medicine and cosmetics. A separate chapter is devoted to the deep-processed peat product - humic substances (humate, humic and fulvic salts and acids). Generalised dependence of product extraction rate and its properties, depending on the process parameters are provided. Widely ar…

Valorization of kiwi agricultural waste and industry by-products by recovering bioactive compounds and applications as food additives : a circular ec…
2021
Currently, agricultural production generates large amounts of organic waste, both from the maintenance of farms and crops (agricultural wastes) and from the industrialization of the product (food industry waste). In the case of Actinidia cultivation, agricultural waste groups together leaves, flowers, stems and roots while food industry by-products are represented by discarded fruits, skin and seeds. All these matrices are now underexploited and so, they can be revalued as a natural source of ingredients to be applied in food, cosmetic or pharmaceutical industries. Kiwifruit composition (phenolic compounds, volatile compounds, vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, etc.) is an outstanding basis…
