Animacy-based predictions in language comprehension are robust: contextual cues modulate but do not nullify them

2015

Couldn't a humble coconut hurt a gardener? At least in the first instance, the brain seems to assume that it should not: we perceive inanimate entities such as coconuts as poor event instigators ("Actors"). Ideally, entities causing a change in another entity should be animate and this assumption not only influences event perception but also carries over to language comprehension. We present three auditory event-related brain potential (ERP) studies on the processing of inanimate and animate subjects and objects in simple transitive sentences in Tamil. ERP responses were measured at the second argument (event participant) in all three studies. Experiment 1 employed all possible animacy comb…

Competing economies of worth in a multiagency music and reconciliation partnership: The Sri Lanka Norway Music Cooperation (2009-2018)

2020

The Sri Lanka Norway Music Cooperation (2009–2018) was launched to ‘stimulate the performing arts in Sri Lanka, thus contributing to the peace and reconciliation process’ in the aftermath of almost three decades of civil war between the Tamil minority and Sinhala majority populations of the island. Funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the project had many local and international stakeholders, from artists and civil society organisations, to government institutions, to a general public eager for enrichment through arts and culture. But despite high engagement and financial investment, the achievements of the SLNMC were generally unremarkable and short-term. This article argue…

2015

The article focuses on Tamil schools abroad that are part of the Tamil Education Development Council (TEDC), and on their construction of ethno-national belongings. By presenting the TEDC geographical, contextual and organizational structures, the article explains how education organizations form a transnational space where the organizations reinforce and recreate ethno-national orientations and belongings, which in turn reconstructs the Tamil diaspora itself through processes of standardization and homogenization.

Matkalla paratiisiin : itsemurhaterrorismin leviäminen globaaliksi taktiikaksi

2012

Ensimmäinen moderni terroristinen itsemurhaisku tapahtui Libanonissa vuonna 1981. Tutkimus kartoittaa samalla eri terroristiryhmien välisiä verkostoja. Tutkimuksen tapausesimerkeiksi valikoitui kolme terroristijärjestöä: libanonilainen Hizbollah, srilankalainen Tamilitiikerit sekä palestiinalaisjärjestöt Hamas ja Palestiinan islamilainen jihad. Maantieteellisesti tutkimus keskittyy siis Libanoniin, Sri Lankaan sekä Israelii…
