The text examines published and unpublished materials – such as historical and ethnographic sources, archive records, and musical documents – which testify the presence of tarantism in Sicily from mid-17th century to the end of the 19th. The Sicilian case is then considered in a wider context of contributions on the theme, starting from the ‘classic’ De Martino’work, up to the debate on the interpretation of the phenomenon between the poles of exorcism and possession, chiefly rased by French ethnomusicologist Gilbert Rouget. All’interno della collana di studi “Meridionalia”, vede la luce un nuovo volume che è meglio rappresentato dal sottotitolo piuttosto che dal titolo. Il testo, infatti, traccia un excursus complesso e completo sul fenomeno del tarantismo, sui suoi riflessi linguistici e culturali, sugli studi antropologici che hanno riguardato in particolare il Salento. Dal campo magico-religioso, importante in un contesto rurale, dove il tarantato era sì il malcapitato costretto dal veleno della tarantola a movimenti scomposti, ma anche la persona attorno a cui ruotava un rituale simbolico collettivo, oggi ci si sposta alla nuova referenzialità, ludica e identitaria, del ballo della taranta.
