Cancer growth dynamics: stochastic models and noise induced effects

In the framework of the Michaelis‐Menten (MM) reaction kinetics, we analyze the cancer growth dynamics in the presence of the immune response. We found the coexistence of noise enhanced stability (NES) and resonant activation (RA) phenomena which act in an opposite way with respect to the extinction of the tumor. The role of the stochastic resonance (SR) in the case of weak cancer therapy has been analyzed. The evolutionary dynamics of a system of cancerous cells in a model of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is investigated by a Monte Carlo approach. Extrahepatic spread of hepatocellular carcinoma

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major health problem. The treatment of HCC depends on the tumour stage and on the severity of underlying cirrhosis, however, a majority of HCC patients have advanced disease at presentation. In recent years extra-hepatic spread (ES) of HCC seems to have been observed more frequently than in the past even if few data exist in literature on prevalence, clinical presentation and prognosis of patients with HCC ES. The multikinase inhibitor sorafenib was the first agent to demonstrate a survival benefit for patients with locally advanced or metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Abstract: The onset of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is related to the development of non-neoplastic liver disease, such as viral infections and cirrhosis. Very high specific activity erbium 169Er production for potential receptor-targeted radiotherapy

Erbium 169Er is one of the most interesting radiolanthanides for new potential receptor-targeted β− therapy applications due to its low energy β− emissions, very low intensity ɣ rays and the possibility to use 68Ga or 44Sc as companion for diagnostic in a theranostics approach. Currently it can be produced in reactors through the neutron activation of highly enriched 168Er. The low specific activity of the produced carrier-added 169Er is limiting its use for receptor-targeted therapy. Nonetheless it is used for radiosynoviorthesis of small joints. Oncogene Addiction in Solid Tumors

The term “oncogenic addiction” refers to the phenomenon by which tumor cells become completely dependent on a single pathway, derived from the activation of a specific oncogene, for their survival and proliferation. The clinical relevance of oncogene addiction paradigm is highlighted by a growing number of examples that demonstrate the efficacy of several therapeutic agents that target specific oncogenes in various cancer types. This chapter aims to summarize the recent evidences concerning the concept of oncogene addiction and describes molecular mechanisms that could explain this phenomenon.

The development of new therapeutic strategies, such as monoclonal antibodies directed against human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2), has offered new hopes for women with early breast cancer whose tumors overexpress HER2.
