This article examines Olympe de Gouges’ demands for the rights of woman in her famous but still understudied work Les droits de la femme. A La Reine [1791]. Particular emphasis is put on analysing how she combines her demand for equality with her conception of sexual difference. The article consists of three parts. The first part gives a brief overview of the demands for the equality of the sexes as they were presented in seventeenth-century France and critically reacted upon in eighteenth-century France, not least by Jean-Jacques Rousseau in his defence of sexual difference. This teaching case focuses on appearance and gender discrimination in the workplace. Previous studies show, for example, that appearance, women’s especially, can be an invisible mechanism of discrimination and interpreted as a justification for sexual and gender-based harassment. Prior research also indicates that women suffer from gendered ageism, also related to looks. The introduction of women’s suffrage in 1906 and the election of the first female members to parliament made Finland an object of international attention. Contemporary cross-national comparisons were common, and there was a tendency to compete and evaluate each other. In Finland, many women activists and some male politicians, too, felt that they had to prove women’s political competence and hence actively communicated the experiences of women’s suffrage struggle internationally. Osana yhteispohjoismaista hanketta Gender and Philosophy tein tutkimuksen, jonka virittäjänä oli naisten alhainen osuus filosofian opiskelijoista, tutkijoista ja yliopistotason opetushenkilökunnasta. Tavoitteena oli selvittää, minkälaisin pedagogisin keinoin olisi mahdollista edistää naisten integroitumista filosofiaan. Koska tämä kuitenkin edellyttää jonkinlaista ymmärrystä myös ilmiön syistä, päädyin analysoimaan naisopiskelijoiden tilanteen eri puolia ja tekemään jonkin verran empiiristä taustatutkimusta, joissa vastaajina ja haastateltavina oli sekä naisiksi että miehiksi itsensä identifioivia opiskelijoita ja jo alalle valmistuneita. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli tutkia yläkoulun opinto-ohjaajien käsityksiä siitä, vaikuttaako ohjattavan sukupuoli heidän suhtautumiseensa ohjattaviin, sekä opinto-ohjaajan käsityksiä tyttöjen ja poikien ohjaamisesta. Taustalla on ajatus sukupuolisensitiivisestä ohjauksesta, jossa huomioidaan sukupuolten erot, tunnistetaan sukupuolen aiheuttamat rajoitukset ja uhkat, sekä tunnistetaan omat ennakkokäsitykset. Myös sukupuolten tasa-arvo erilaisissa konteksteissaan on tutkimuksen tärkeä teema.
