R2D2 at GeoCLEF 2006: A Combined Approach

2007

This paper describes the participation of a combined approach in GeoCLEF-2006. We have participated in Monolingual English Task and we present joint work of the three groups or teams belonging to the project R2D2 with a new system, combining the three individual systems of these teams. We consider that research in the area of GIR is still in its very early stages, therefore, although a voting system could improve the individual results of each system, we have to further investigate different ways to achieve a better combination of these systems.

Tracing discursive processes of shared knowledge construction in a technology-enhanced higher education setting

2013

This study focused on combining both the group- and individual-level analyses in studying a collaborative activity in technology-enhanced interactions in a higher education setting. The aim was to make visible, with empirical examples, the quality of the students' web-based discussions and trace the route for shared understanding. By quantifying various communicative functions, the analysis provided general knowledge on the quality and purpose of the discussion in the group and highlighted the different functional positions each student had within the group. However, only a detailed interpretative analysis of the relationships between specific thematic contents, communicative functions, and…

Employee shirking and overworking: modelling the unintended consequences of work organisation

2020

Underworking (i.e. shirking) and overworking of employees can have detrimental effects for the individual and the organisation. We develop a computational model to investigate how work structure, specifically the way in which managers distribute work tasks amongst employees, impacts work intensity and working time. The model draws on theories from economics, psychology and management, and on empirical observations. The simulations show that when managers correctly estimate task difficulty, but undervalue the employee’s competence, opportunities for shirking are provided due to longer deadlines. Similarly, if managers overvalue the employee’s competence, they set tighter deadlines leading to…

The Need of Co-utility for Successful Crowdsourcing

2017

Technological development has promoted the rise and use of the collective intelligence through Internet. To efficiently handle this collective intelligence, several processes have naturally emerged. Crowdsourcing is one of them. By using crowdsourcing, the undertaking of a task can be proposed by a person or organization to the crowd that composes Internet. Although these proposed tasks could vary in their requirements for successful accomplishment, any crowdsourcing initiative always includes different benefits for the promoters of the initiatives and one or more rewards for each person of the crowd. These rewards play a key role because their evaluation by the crowd will condition the num…

Test-driven development in education

2008

Test-Driven Development (TDD) was applied in educational setting right after it became well-known as a key practice of Extreme Programming (XP). Basically, there are many studies reporting positive experiences on TDD applied in different levels of a curriculum. In this paper, we discuss the role of TDD in education through the students' experiences. In our experiment, a challenging programming task was applied in order to see what kind of difficulties the students would encounter and discuss. The students' answers revealed several topics that require a careful treatment in teaching to avoid conceptual confusion. For example, the topics include the scalability of TDD, extent of single test, …

A Multiagent Framework to Animate Socially Intelligent Agents

2007

This paper presents a multiagent framework designed to animate groups of synthetic humans that properly balance task oriented and social behaviors. The work presented in this paper focuses on the BDI agents and the social model integrated to provide socially acceptable decisions. The social model provides rationality, to control the global coordination of the group, and sociability, to simulate relations (e.g. friends) and reciprocity between members. The multiagent based framework has been tested successfully in dynamic environments while simulating a virtual university bar, where several types of agents (groups of waiters and customers) can interact and finally display complex social beha…

Promoting collaborative interactions in a learning management system

2015

This study aimed at addressing social and technological challenges in a computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) setting. Observations were made in the context of an online Master's degree program. A group of four students supported by online tutors and facilitators participated in the study. Interaction analysis (IA) helped reveal both successful and problematic aspects in the CSCL setting. The role of the online tutors' prompts and pointers was critical in scaffolding effective collaborative interactions among students in a learning management system (LMS). The students chose to use additional tools besides the LMS in their collaborative learning activities. The analysis also reve…

Planning in Collaborative Stigmergic Workspaces

2011

The paper investigates how the engineered capabilities of structuring the knowledge encoded in collaborative workspaces affect the collective intelligence of its users. The investigation is made for the particular case of collaborative planning and is grounded on the theoretical framework of stigmergic systems. The knowledge structure encoded in collaborative workspaces in the form of a conceptual hierarchical task network is analysed by building a multi-agent simulation to evaluate the performance of different planning strategies. The results show that different representational complexities of collaborative planning knowledge have a great impact over the collective intelligence when the u…

Pre-determinants of Implementing IT Benefits Management in Norwegian Municipalities: Cultivate the Context

2008

The concept of benefits management addresses explicated practices to realize benefits from information technology investments. However, a minority of organizations have implemented those. We explored which pre-determinants affect the implementation of benefits management practices by conducting a Delphi process in the Norwegian municipality sector. The experts represented governmental organs, general management, and municipal service managers. They identified 59 pre-determinants of potential importance. However, the experts reached no significant consensus on the relative importance of the pre-determinants. Instead, we suggest that the identified pre-determinants should be holistically and …
