INFLUENCE OF MONOXIDES ADDITION ON SINTERING OF SODIUM-POTASSIUM NIOBATES SOLID SOLUTION
2008
ABSTRACT In this paper the preparation, structure and dielectric parameters of ceramics from different powders of pure potassium sodium niobate (KNN) and KNN doped with 1.0 wt% of Li2O, CdO, Bi2O3, MnO2, V2O5 and WO3 have been studied. The dopping of sintering aids did not affect the crystallographic structure of the ceramics significantly; all ceramic samples had a single-phase perovskite structure. Added elements Li2O, CdO, MnO2, V2O5 effectively decreased the sintering temperature of KNN (50°–80°C). All sintering aids influenced sinterability, microstructure and dielectric properties of ceramics. Dielectric constant for doped samples increased from 6000 up to 8000.
An experimental analysis of thick-film solid-state reference electrodes
2012
Thick-Film planar solid-state Silver/Silver Chloride (Ag/AgCl) reference electrodes were developed and tested for ion susceptibility and long term drift in approximately 0.04 M potassium chloride (KCl) solution. Various types of electrodes were tested exhibiting stabilities down to 2 millivolts per decade change of chloride concentration. It is demonstrated that Thick-Film reference electrodes are suitable for use in underground soil measurements due to their ruggedness and robustness.
Mapping Ash CaCO3, pH, and Extractable Elements Using Principal Component Analysis
2017
Abstract Ash cover in fire-affected areas is an important factor in the reduction of soil erosion and increased availability of soil nutrients. Thus it is important to understand the spatial distribution of ash and its capacity for soil protection and to provide nutrients to the underlying soil. In this work, we aimed to map ash CaCO3, pH, and select extractable elements using a principal component analysis (PCA). Four days after a medium to severe wildfire, we established a grid in a 9 ×27 m area on a west facing slope and took ash samples every 3 m for a total of 40 sampling points. The PCA carried out retained five different factors. Factor 1 had high positive loadings for ash with elect…
Continuous-wave, double-pass second-harmonic generation with 60% efficiency in a single MgO:PPSLT crystal
2014
We present a double-pass scheme for high-efficiency, high-power, second-harmonic generation (SHG) in a single MgO-doped periodically poled stoichiometric lithium tantalate (MgO:PPSLT) crystal. The device is pumped by a single-frequency, continuous-wave fiber amplifier laser system at a wavelength of 1091 nm. For the double-pass scheme, a conversion efficiency of 60% and a harmonic power of 12.8 W at a wavelength of 545.5 nm with a high beam quality of (M2<1.2) is achieved. Compared to single-pass SHG, a double-pass enhancement factor of more than two is observed at the highest fundamental pump power.
Simulation of the relative atomic populations of elements 1 ≤ Z ≤89 following charge exchange tested with collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy…
2019
© 2019 The Authors Calculations of the neutralisation cross-section and relative population of atomic states were performed for ions beams (1 ≤ Z ≤ 89) at 5 and 40 keV incident on free sodium and potassium atoms. To test the validity of the calculations, the population distribution of indium ions incident on a vapour of sodium was measured at an intermediate energy of 20 keV. The relative populations of the 5s 2 5p 2 P 1/2 and 5s 2 5p 2 P 3/2 states in indium were measured using collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy and found to be consistent with the calculations. Charge exchange contributions to high-resolution lineshapes were also investigated and found to be reproduced by the calc…
Nuclear charge radii of potassium isotopes beyond N=28
2014
We report on the measurement of optical isotope shifts for 38, 39, 42, 44, 46–51 K relative to 47 K from which changes in the nuclear mean square charge radii across the N = 28 shell closure are deduced. The investigation was carried out by bunched-beam collinear laser spectroscopy at the CERN-ISOLDE radioactive ion-beam facility. Mean square charge radii are now known from 37K to 51K, covering all ν f7/2-shell as well as all νp3/2-shell nuclei. These measurements, in conjunction with those of Ca, Cr, Mn and Fe, provide a first insight into the Z dependence of the evolution of nuclear size above the shell closure at N = 28
Exploring Zinc Apatites through Different Synthesis Routes
2013
nclusion of zinc in apatites is not completely understood due to complexes in solution preventing the incorporation or the inclusion of defects. Some work has shown zinc addition by alternative synthesis routes, but the level of incorporation has not been reassessed. This work uses a newly developed approach whereby zinc is included in an amorphous phase and subsequently crystallized. Different phosphate reactants (ammonium, sodium or potassium phosphates) were mixed together with calcium salts (calcium nitrate or calcium acetate) and the pH level adjusted (with ammonia or KOH) to investigate the ease of forming an amorphous phase and the inclusion of zinc. X-ray diffraction revealed that a…

Two Structurally Distinct Pathways for the Voltage-Sensing S4 Helices
2010
In voltage-dependent ion channels, the movement of the voltage-sensing S4 helices produces gating currents. The charge displaced as a function of the membrane potential (Q-V) is well described by a sequential two-state Boltzmann relation, indicating that there are at least two steps of gating charge movement from their Resting state to the Active state. In addition, it has been shown that at a maintained positive potential, the S4 helices of voltage-gated Na, Ca and K channels and the voltage sensitive phosphatase Ci-VSP, undergo a slower secondary conformational transition stabilizing the sensor in a Relaxed (inactivated) state. From the Relaxed state, the Q-V relation exhibits a strong sh…
