Three-dimensional dynamics of a particle with a finite energy of magnetic anisotropy in a rotating magnetic field.

2013

A model of a single ferromagnetic particle with a finite coupling energy of the magnetic moment with the body of the particle is formulated, and regimes of its motion in a rotating magnetic field are investigated. Regimes are possible that are synchronous and asynchronous with the field. In a synchronous regime the easy axis of the particle is in the plane of the rotating magnetic field at low frequencies (a planar regime) and on the cone at high frequencies (a precession regime). The stability of these regimes is investigated, and it is shown that the precession regime is stable for field strengths below the critical value. In a particular range of field strength value, irreversible jumps …

Diffusion in active magnetic colloids

2013

Abstract Properties of active colloids of circle swimmers are reviewed. As a particular example of active magnetic colloids the magnetotactic bacteria under the action of a rotating magnetic field is considered. The relation for a diffusion coefficient due to the random switching of the direction of rotation of their rotary motors is derived on the basis of the master equation. The obtained relation is confirmed by the direct numerical simulation of random trajectory of a magnetotactic bacterium under the action of the Poisson type internal noise due to the random switching of rotary motors. The results obtained are in qualitative and quantitative agreement with the available experimental r…

Long term X-ray spectral variability of the nucleus of M81

2003

We have analysed the soft X-ray emission from the nuclear source of the nearby spiral galaxy M81, using the available data collected with ROSAT, ASCA, BeppoSAX and Chandra. The source flux is highly variable, showing (sometimes dramatic: a factor of 4 in 20 days) variability at different timescales, from 2 days to 4 years, and in particular a steady increase of the flux by a factor of >~ 2 over 4 years, broken by rapid flares. After accounting for the extended component resolved by Chandra, the nuclear soft X-ray spectrum (from ROSAT/PSPC, BeppoSAX/LECS and Chandra data) cannot be fitted well with a single absorbed power-law model. Acceptable fits are obtained adding an extra component, …

Dynamics of oscillating relativistic tori around Kerr black holes

2004

We present a comprehensive numerical study of the dynamics of relativistic axisymmetric accretion tori with a power-law distribution of specific angular momentum orbiting in the background spacetime of a Kerr black hole. By combining general relativistic hydrodynamics simulations with a linear perturbative approach we investigate the main dynamical properties of these objects over a large parameter space. The astrophysical implications of our results extend and improve two interesting results that have been recently reported in the literature. Firstly, the induced quasi-periodic variation of the mass quadrupole moment makes relativistic tori of nuclear matter densities, as those formed duri…

Steady state shocks in accretion disks around a Kerr black hole

1994

Results of numerical simulations of shock solutions in a geometrical thin accretion disk around a Kerr black hole (BH) are presented. Using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) technique, the influence of the central object is included by means of an effective potential, We first present the theory of standing shock formation in accretion disks around a Kerr black hole, and show that the results of our numerical simulation agree very well with the theoretical results. We find that the shocks in an inviscid flow are very stable. We also remove the ambiguity prevalent regarding the location and stability of shocks in adiabatic flows. Finally we sketch some of the astrophysical consequenc…

QPOs expected in rotating accretion flows around a supermassive black hole

2006

AbstractIt is well known that rotating inviscid accretion flows with adequate injection parameters around black holes could form shock waves close to the black holes, after the flow passes through the outer sonic point and can be virtually stopped by the centrifugal force. We numerically examine such shock waves in 2D accretion flows with 10−5 to 106 Eddington critical accretion rates around a supermassive black hole with 106M⊙. As the results, the luminosities show QPO phenomena with modulations of a factor 2–3 and with quasi-periods of a few to several hours.

The runaway instability of thick discs around black holes. II. Non constant angular momentum discs

2003

We present results from a comprehensive number of relativistic, time-dependent, axisymmetric simulations of the runaway instability of non-constant angular momentum thick discs around black holes. This second paper extends earlier results where only constant angular momentum discs were considered. All relevant aspects of the theory of stationary thick discs around rotating black holes, necessary to build the initial state in our simulations, are presented in great detail. The angular momentum of the discs is assumed to increase outwards with the radial distance according to a power law. The main simplifying assumptions of our approach are not to include magnetic fields and self-gravity in t…

Laser Pulse Effects in Two-level Systems Driven by Coherent and Fluctuating Radiation Fields

1988

Abstract We reconsider the problem of a two-level system interacting with a radiation field in order to study some new features suggested by the actual experimental conditions. Pulse shape and duration effects are included in the formalism and the counter-rotating terms are retained. The criterion of validity of the rotating wave approximation (RWA) for pulsed fields is investigated; generalizing results well known in RWA, we establish some new formal results, including non-RWA contributions to all orders and for any pulse shape. The analysis is then carried out for fluctuating fields, by developing a method based on the theory of multiplicative stochastic differential equations. For short …

Dynamics of an elongated magnetic droplet in a rotating field

2002

A model is proposed for the dynamics of an elongated droplet under the action of a low frequency rotating magnetic field. This model determines a set of critical frequencies at which the transitions to more complex bent shapes take place. These transitions occur through propagation of jumps of the droplet's axial tangent angle described by a nonlinear singularly perturbed partial differential equation with the intrinsic viscosity of the droplet playing the regularizing role.

Effect of a Steady Magnetic Field and Imposed Rotation of Vessel on Heat and Mass Transfer in Swirling Recirculating Flows

1999

A simplified theoretical model for the solidification interface shape prediction is introduced and tested. We linearised a coupled hydrodynamic-solidification problem about the state with a flat interface. In such a way we split the problem into a hydrodynamic part with a flat solid-liquid front and a solidification part with a calculated heat flux from the liquid phase. The method allows obvious conclusions on optimum heat conditions near the solidification interface providing its flatness and maximum pulling velocity at the same time. Comparison to the results by FLUENT package showed that the method provides a reasonable accuracy even for a noticeably deformed interface shape. Another pa…
