Abstract This paper analyses falsely implicating from the point of view of Gricean theory of implicature, focusing on the Story of the Mate and the Captain which is a classical example of lying while saying the truth. It is argued that the case of falsely implicating should be included within a general definition of lying. Ever since the seminal work of Paul Grice, tautologies such as Business is business have been discussed from a number of angles. While most approaches assume that tautological utterances have to do with the operation of conversational maxims, an integrated analysis is still lacking. This paper makes an attempt at analysing tautologies within the framework of Levinson (2000), who proposes a distinction between three pragmatic levels, namely Indexical Pragmatics, Gricean Pragmatics 1, and Gricean Pragmatics 2. Artikkelissa selvitetään tiedonalakohtaisten tekstitaitojen viitekehyksessä, miten lukiolaisten historian esseissä rekontekstualisoidaan aineistona olevia historiallisia -dokumentteja ja miten dokumentteja selostavat ja niitä tulkitsevat esitykset eroavat toisistaan. Aineistona on 52 lukion kurssikokeen yhteydessä kirjoitettua esseetä, joiden tehtävänanto edellyttää aineistojen hyödyntämistä vastauksen perustelussa. Tutkimuksen teoreettisena ja metodologisena viitekehyksenä ovat systeemis-funktionaalinen kieliteoria ja siihen pohjautuva suhtautumisen teoria. Telomere Length in Circulating Leukocytes is Associated with Lung Function and Disease

Several clinical studies suggest the involvement of premature ageing processes in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Using an epidemiological approach, we studied whether accelerated ageing indicated by telomere length, a marker of biological age, is associated with COPD and asthma, and whether intrinsic age-related processes contribute to the interindividual variability of lung function.
