La perspectiva intercultural. Ortega y la hermenéutica

2018

In this article, I present the intercultural perspective …

Vibrational Energy Levels via Finite-Basis Calculations Using a Quasi-Analytic Form of the Kinetic Energy

2015

A variational method for the calculation of low-lying vibrational energy levels of molecules with small amplitude vibrations is presented. The approach is based on the Watson Hamiltonian in rectilinear normal coordinates and characterized by a quasi-analytic integration over the kinetic energy operator (KEO). The KEO beyond the harmonic approximation is represented by a Taylor series in terms of the rectilinear normal coordinates around the equilibrium configuration. This formulation of the KEO enables its extension to arbitrary order until numerical convergence is reached for those states describing small amplitude motions and suitably represented with a rectilinear system of coordinates. …

A new algorithm for simulating flows of conducting fluids in the presence of electric fields

2012

Abstract We propose an algorithm based on dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) for simulations of conducting fluids in the presence of an electric field. In this model, the electrostatic equations are solved in each DPD time step to determine the charge density at the fluid surfaces. These surface charges are distributed on a thin layer of fluid particles near the interface, and the corresponding interfacial electric forces are added to other DPD forces. The algorithm is applied to the electrospinning process at the Taylor cone formation stage. It is shown that, when the applied voltage is sufficiently high, the algorithm captures the formation of a Taylor cone with analytical apex angle 98.…

Perturbations of spacetime: gauge transformations and gauge invariance at second order and beyond

1996

We consider in detail the problem of gauge dependence that exists in relativistic perturbation theory, going beyond the linear approximation and treating second and higher order perturbations. We first derive some mathematical results concerning the Taylor expansion of tensor fields under the action of one-parameter families (not necessarily groups) of diffeomorphisms. Second, we define gauge invariance to an arbitrary order $n$. Finally, we give a generating formula for the gauge transformation to an arbitrary order and explicit rules to second and third order. This formalism can be used in any field of applied general relativity, such as cosmological and black hole perturbations, as well …

On the regularity of critical and minimal sets of a free interface problem

2015

We study a free interface problem of finding the optimal energy configuration for mixtures of two conducting materials with an additional perimeter penalization of the interface. We employ the regularity theory of linear elliptic equations to study the possible opening angles of Taylor cones and to give a different proof of a partial regularity result by Fan Hua Lin [Calc Var. Partial Differential Equations, 1993].

Crushing of Interstellar Gas Clouds in Supernova Remnants: the Role of Thermal Conduction and Radiative Losses

2004

We model hydrodynamic interactions of an old supernova remnant shock wave with a small interstellar gas cloud, taking into account the effects of thermal conduction and radiative losses. In particular, we consider a representative case of a Mach 30 shock impacting on an isolated cloud with density contrast χ = 10 with respect to the ambient medium. Thermal conduction appears to be effective in suppressing the Kelvin-Helmholtz and Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities which would develop at the cloud boundaries. We demonstrate that the radiative losses play a crucial role in the dynamics of the shock-cloud interaction, dominating evolution of the shocked cloud medium.

A representation of wind velocity by means of fractional spectral moments

2009

This paper deals with the definition of a new function that is a link between Power Spectral Density (PSD) and correlation function, called the Fractional Spectral Moments function. This is defined as the moment of complex order g of the one-sided PSD. It is shown that by means of this complex function both the correlation function and PSD can be represented with great accuracy.

A new representation of power spectral density and correlation function by means of fractional spectral moments

2009

In this paper, a new perspective for the representation of both the power spectral density and the correlation function by a unique class of function is introduced. We define the moments of order gamma (gamma being a complex number) of the one sided power spectral density and we call them Fractional Spectral Moments (FSM). These complex quantities remain finite also in the case in which the ordinary spectral moments diverge, and are able to represent the whole Power Spectral Density and the corresponding correlation function.

PRINZIPIELLE BEMERKUNGEN ZU THEORIE UND PRAXIS DER METHODE DER ZWEITEN ABLEITUNG BEI DER INTERPRETATION GRAVIMETRISCHER MESSERGEBNISSE

1957

The first part of the paper deals with theoretical considerations concerning the arithmetic mean of gravity values and its use with regard to the derivation of approximation formulae for the second derivative. In order to calculate the second derivative in practice the arithmetic mean. ḡ(r) of a continuum of gravity values on a circle of radius r is approximated by a Taylor polynomial and then replaced by the arithmetic mean gn(r) of n discrete gravity values. Because of the invariance of ġ(r) with regard to rotations of the coordinate system in the horizontal datum plane there exists a lower limit for the number n; this lower limit depends on the degree of the Taylor polynomial used in the…

Fractional integration, differentiation, and weighted Bergman spaces

1999

We study the action of fractional differentiation and integration on weighted Bergman spaces and also the Taylor coeffficients of functions in certain subclasses of these spaces. We then derive several criteria for the multipliers between such spaces, complementing and extending various recent results. Univalent Bergman functions are also considered.
