Time delay induced effects on control of linear systems under random excitation

2001

Recursive formulas in terms of statistics of the response of linear systems with time delay under normal white noise input are developed. Two alternative methods are presented, in order to capture the time delay effects. The first is given in an approximate solution obtained by expanding the control force in a Taylor series. The second, available for the stationary solution (if it exists) gets the variance of the controlled system, with time delay in an analytical form. The efficacy loss in terms of statistics of the response is discussed in detail.

Fractional calculus approach to the statistical characterization of random variables and vectors

2009

Fractional moments have been investigated by many authors to represent the density of univariate and bivariate random variables in different contexts. Fractional moments are indeed important when the density of the random variable has inverse power-law tails and, consequently, it lacks integer order moments. In this paper, starting from the Mellin transform of the characteristic function and by fractional calculus method we present a new perspective on the statistics of random variables. Introducing the class of complex moments, that include both integer and fractional moments, we show that every random variable can be represented within this approach, even if its integer moments diverge. A…

Stochastic response of combined primary-secondary structures under seismic input

1992

A technique for non-stationary stochastic analysis of linear combined primary and secondary subsystems subjected to a zero-mean Gaussian base excitation is presented. The proposed technique, based on the use of the Taylor's expansion in evaluating the operators which appear in the step-by-step procedure, does not require the evaluation of the complex eigenproperties of the combined system. Operating in this way, even though the numerical procedure is a conditionally stable one, appears to be more efficient than existing methods to evaluate the dynamic response of such composite systems. It is also shown that the proposed procedure is available whether the seismic input is idealized as a fil…

Monetary Policy Rules: From Adam Smith to John Taylor

2012

We describe, through the lenses of history, the intellectual origins of the Taylor rule. The Taylor rule was an important component of the transformation that swept through the monetary policy landascape in a remarkable few years following the abandonment of monetary targeting. In this long paper we provide an original overview of the long-dated debate on rules vs discretion in monetary policy, ever since Adam Smith and the monetary controversies of the XIX century. We then analyse in greater detail the debates in the interwar years (Wicksell, Keynes, Cassel, Simons, Fisher) and the debates in the 1950s and 1960s (Phillips, Friedman, the rational expectation hipothesis) and how these debate…

Perspectives on freedom : normative and political views on the preconditions of a free democratic society

2018

In today’s society we seem to be confronted with renewed struggles about the ideal of freedom. After decades of wide-spread belief in the benefits of globalization, marketization, open borders, and de-regulation, we are now facing a countermovement consisting of various forms of populism and nationalism that promise to restore borders, security and identity. Both movements seem to be informed by problematic conceptions of freedom: globalization and marketization are often accompanied by an ‘atomistic’ picture of society, whereby self-sufficient individuals compete in free markets, which neglects the social, political and cultural preconditions of individual freedom, and this can lead to fee…

Itseyden konstituutio kehitysprosessina : näkökulmia itseyden muodostumiseen Erik H. Eriksonin psykoanalyyttisen kehitysteorian ja Charles Taylorin f…

2007

Strong evaluation without sources : on Charles Taylor's philosophical anthropology and cultural moral realism

2003

Kanadalaisen filosofin Charles Taylorin teorioihin perustuvassa väitöskirjassaan Arto Laitinen esittää, että inhimillinen toiminta, identiteetti ja persoonuus perustuvat ns. 'vahvoille arvostuksille'. Filosofisesti vaati…

More Power through Symbolic Computation: Extending Stata by using the Maxima Computer algebra system

2015

Maxima is a free and open-source computer algebra system that can perform symbolic computations such as solving equations, determining derivatives of functions, obtaining Taylor series, and manipulating algebraic expressions. In this article, I present the Maxima Bridge System, which is a collection of software programs that allows Stata to interface with Maxima so that Maxima can be used for symbolic computation to transfer data from Stata to Maxima and to retrieve results from Maxima. The cooperation between Stata and Maxima provides an environment for statistical analysis in which symbolic computation can be easily used together with all the facilities supplied by Stata. In this environ…
