ACTIVE LEARNING METHODS IN STUDIES: STUDENTS’ OPINIONS AND EXPERIENCES
2021
Rapid changes in education and pedagogy are related not only to the global crisis caused by COVID-19, but also to other changes determined by globalization and technological convergence—labour mobility, changes in different professions and changes in teacher–student relations—that are also affected by intergenerational differences. Changes in the pedagogical paradigm, which are included in the content of the Paris Communiqué (2018) and outlined in many important educational development and planning documents, emphasise students’ transition from being mere recipients of information to being participants actively engaged with new information in a learning environment. Following the identifica…
The Startup Scratch Book – Opening the Black Box of Startup Education
2021
Teaching entrepreneurship and startups is a challenging task. Approaches using real or simulated entrepreneurship as a teaching method are also common in startup education. However, as educators and researchers, we typically only observe the outcomes of the startup journey between weekly lectures and other meetings, whereas the actions taken by the student teams can seldom be observed. This makes the process a black box. All valuable learnings, realizations, and big ideas happen in the students’ minds, and little evidence exists to say what happened during the course. As a result, we are entirely missing out on the most critical elements of the learning process. To remedy this issue, we pro…
Using Interactive Methods in Teaching Accounting
2016
Abstract Active learning shifts the focus of instruction from what the teacher should teach or deliver to students, to what the students should be able to do with the course material. Interactive methods are modern ways of stimulating teaching, representing tools of learning which favor the interchange of ideas, experiences, and knowledge. The purpose of this paper is to present a series of active teaching methods for the accounting data as being an alternative in the process of improving the teaching and learning of the accounting process.
Computer graphics applications in the education process of people with learning difficulties
2007
This paper describes the use of Real Time graphic applications as educational tools, specifically oriented to working with people who have certain learning difficulties. We first focus on identifying the most relevant traits (from a psychological point of view) of those disorders, then we continue by analysing the advantages of graphics in Real Time in this context, and how they can be used to complement the conventional teaching methods. Finally, we review the main characteristics of two applications belonging to this category, which serve as a practical example of this encounter between education and technology.

Qualities of mathematical discourses in kindergartens
2020
AbstractIn this study we investigated qualities of the mathematical discourse in four kindergarten classes in which kindergarten teachers and 5-year-old children engaged in mathematical learning activities. We analysed differences in the mathematical discourses in two experimental kindergarten classes and two control kindergarten classes, in a research and development project. The overarching research question guiding our study was as follows: what characterises the mathematical discourse unfolding in kindergarten classes? In our study we drew on the theoretical framework Mathematical Discourse in Instruction coined by Adler and Ronda, as we quantified the collected qualitative data. Our an…
Student-teachers’ use ofGoogle Earthin problem-based geology learning
2011
Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are adequate for analyzing complex scientific and spatial phenomena in geography education. Google Earth is a geographic information tool for GIS-based learning. It allows students to engage in the lesson, explore the Earth, explain what they identify and evaluate the implications of what they are learning. This paper introduces one example of using Google Earth for problem-based learning processes in teacher education. Student-teachers’ geographical thinking was analyzed during the study process. We have found that although student-teachers have inadequate skills to use information and communication technology, the use of Google Earth improved student…
The Cognitive Demand of a Gifted Student’s Answers to Geometric Pattern Problems
2018
Mathematically gifted students require specific teaching methodologies to foster their interest in mathematics and their engagement in solving problems. Geometric pattern problems are an interesting context in which to introduce algebra to those students. We present the case of a nine-year-old student engaged in a teaching unit based on geometric pattern problems that was aimed at helping him start learning algebra, equations, and algebra word problems. To analyze and assess the cognitive effort the student made to solve the problems, we used a particularization to this context of the cognitive demand model. We analyzed answers typical of the different kinds of problems posed throughout the…
