The effects of armed conflict on schooling in Sub-Saharan Africa

2012

In the past decades, most of the countries in sub-Saharan Africa have been affected by armed conflicts. By means of a time-series cross-sectional (TSCS) database, we attempt to measure the impact of war on a sample of 43 countries in Africa from 1950 to 2010. These conflicts, and especially civil wars, are shown to have a strong negative effect on the educational performances of the countries studied. The rate of children not attending school, as well as secondary school enrollment rates, seems particularly sensitive to periods of conflict. It also appears that government expenditures in social sectors including education are a positive factor in increasing school enrollment. In contrast, m…

Mitigating deficiencies of generation Z through new educational methodologies in a business statistic course

2020

[EN] Nowadays, most of the students in first course at University are from the socalled Generation Z. Since a young age, these students have been used digital technology such as internet, mobile phones, tablets and laptops developing certain skills. But a large majority of these students have some deficiencies such as low knowledge of mathematics, scarce levels of motivation, concentration or logical reasoning and little patience (they want to understand everything quickly). These characteristics must be improved being a hard work to do by teachers. New educational methodologies are being adapted taking into account these digital skills and mitigating the deficiencies observed in some stude…

Teaching methodology for Design for Six Sigma and Quality techniques – an approach that combines theory and practice

2017

Abstract Quality techniques and Design for Six Sigma methodology are complex areas that need to be understood through correlation of theoretical and practical teaching. Universities started to apply different approaches for achieving better results, on building greater knowledge and skills for their students. The paper presents a methodology of teaching quality techniques and DFSS methodology, an approach that is focused on understanding the concepts through technical examples from industry and applying the knowledge within a project. A model is proposed for teaching Design for Six Sigma methodology through a workshop done in the classroom. The students are split into groups and will practi…

Adapting teaching and assessment strategies to enhance competence-based learning in the framework of the european convergence process

2007

In the framework of the European higher education area, one of the key issues is to discuss how teaching, learning activities and assessment can be best organised to allow students to reach both transferable skills and subject related competences. In this context, during the 2005/06 academic year, our School decided to essay different strategies in a first-year Pilot Group, due to the traditional poor academic performance on these students. Thus, the proposal included a learning contract that must be signed for all the pupils enrolled on this particular group. Both active teaching-learning methods and additional assessment strategies were applied to achieve the objectives, defined in terms …

Product development and project-based learning in Mechatronics, in the context of digitization and sustainability

2021

Engineering projects affect many of the UN’s sustainability goals. The development and design of new products and systems using a circular economy perspective is an important challenge towards a more sustainable society. Product development projects have common process characteristics, but methodologies, tools and methods differ for developing hardware (mechanical and electrical) or developing software. In Mechatronics such methods need to be combined, and product development and project-based learning is well suited for teaching and learning within Mechatronics, in addition to technical specialization subjects within both mechanical, electrical and software engineering. It is also suited f…

Analyzing double degrees in Spain: A proposal

2015

TThis article reviews the situation of single and double degrees in both public and private Spanish universities. To do so, this study analyzes information from the Registry of Universities, Centers, and Qualifications (RUCT) and Universia Spain. After analyzing the programs currently available to students, we present a proposal to establish a double degree in Administration and Business Management/Industrial Management Engineering. The proposal specifies the degree’s main objectives, specific nature, and fundamental aims and benefits in terms of technical, corporate, innovative, and entrepreneurial competencies. eCity: Virtual City Environment for Engineering Problem Based Learning

2015

The main objective of the eCITY project is to design, develop and validate a pedagogical methodology, supported by an online, collaborative, city-development simulation engine (Simcity like) that stimulates the integration and continuous exploitation of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in engineering and science schools but, at the same time, fostering the interest for these orientations in secondary school students. This article analyses the design, implementation, and evaluation of a nation-wide project to create a common digital solution for university teaching staff’s pedagogical training in Finland. During three years, eight universities collaborated in developing an online learning platform called UNIPS, the University Pedagogical Support system. The areas to develop were A) a learning platform based on technical design principles, B) pedagogical principles, and C) broadening the scope of offered studies. The results have been promising. With a carefully planned timetable, all participating universities were able to produce, test, and offer UNIPS modules in collaboration with other universities …

Use of ICT Teaching-Learning Methods make School Math Blossom

2012

Abstract Our society often talks that their kids at school are taught using old educational methods. It is boring for kids and they lose interest in learning. New generation of kids are different – more provocative, intuitive, sensitive, mental, in some cases more aggressive than previous generations. That is what parents and teachers now see. Therefore the aims of nowadays education demand to choose educational methods promoting active process of cognition that develop skills of learning, creative use of knowledge, skills of self-assessment, cooperation, indulgence to different points of view. Interactive educational methods help to realize those tasks and provide cooperation among teacher…
