Technical note: Monte-Carlo dosimetry of the HDR 12i and Plus 192Ir sources.

2001

In this study a complete set of dosimetric data for the GammaMed high dose rate (HDR) 12i and Plus 192 Ir sources are presented. These data have been calculated by means of the Monte Carlo simulation code GEANT3. Absolute dose rate distributions in water are presented as conventional two dimensional (2D) Cartesian look-up tables, and in the TG43 formalism.

CRISPR-Cas12a-Based Detection of SARS-CoV-2 Harboring the E484K Mutation

2021

The novel respiratory virus SARS-CoV-2 is rapidly evolving across the world with the potential of increasing its transmission and the induced disease. Here, we applied the CRISPR-Cas12a system to detect, without the need of sequencing, SARS-CoV-2 genomes harboring the E484K mutation, first identified in the Beta variant and catalogued as an escape mutation. The E484K mutation creates a canonical protospacer adjacent motif for Cas12a recognition in the resulting DNA amplicon, which was exploited to obtain a differential readout. We analyzed a series of fecal samples from hospitalized patients in Valencia (Spain), finding one infection with SARS-CoV-2 harboring the E484K mutation, which was t…

Technical Note: Airborne Sound Insulation of Hollow Brickwork

2007

This paper reports on the uncertainty of in situ measurements of the airborne sound insulation of hollow-brick walls in different housing plans, with emphasis on the influence of expansion joints. The mean and standard deviation of multiple measurements are obtained, which show significant differences in insulation values despite the fact that the same construction was used in each case.

A stereotactic device for rabbits based on mandibular and cranial landmarks

2008

✓ The authors have developed a stereotactic device for use in rabbits that uses the plane at the base of the mandible combined with cranial sutures as an anatomical reference. The device was developed for a study designed to evaluate catheters for infection prophylaxis, and this required the implantation of silicone catheters along a reproducible trajectory through the lateral ventricle. Cadaver and atlas studies demonstrated consistent spatial relationships between intracranial structures and the surface plane on which the animals were resting during the surgery. This plane is formed by the 2 mandibular angles and the mandibular tip. The authors developed a stainless steel stereotactic dev…

Dural splitting reconstruction in retethering after lipomeningocele repair: Technical note

2021

Background: Tethered spinal cord syndrome (TCS) can occur after the surgical repair of lipomeningoceles (LMCs). In these cases, the tethering results from postoperative adhesions between the spinal cord and the overlying repaired dura. A watertight dural closure using the residual dura and/or the surrounding tissues does not always provide enough space for the spinal cord and risks retethering. Here, we report a 16-year-old patient with secondary TCS following lipomeningocele repair who successfully underwent release of the tethered filum terminale utilizing a novel dural splitting reconstructive technique to attain a water-tight closure without the need for a duroplasty. Methods: A 16-yea…

In Situ, Airborne Instrumentation: Addressing and Solving Measurement Problems in Ice Clouds

2012

The workshop on in situ airborne instrumentation: addressing and solving measurement problems in ice clouds, June 25-27, 2010, Oregon, aimed to identify unresolved questions concerning ice formation and evolution in ice clouds, assess the current state of instrumentation that can address these problems, introduce emerging technology that may overcome current measurement issues, and recommend future courses of action to improve our understanding of ice cloud microphysical. Eleven presentations were made covering measurement challenges associated measuring the composition and concentration of all the modes of ice nuclei (IN), measuring the morphology, mass, surface, and optical properties of …

Analogical and Digital Workflow in the Design and Preparation of the Emergence Profile of Biologically Oriented Preparation Technique (BOPT) Crowns o…

2019

: The Biologically Oriented Preparation Technique (BOPT), developed by Ignacio Loi and published in 2008, is a consolidated concept in the modeling and preservation of pericoronal soft tissues. The present study describes the analogical and digital methods allowing adequate design and preparation of the emergence profile of BOPT crowns in the working model, with a view to comparing the workflow and advantages of each method. At present, not all the digital procedures have been fully optimized to completely replace the traditional analogical methods. Nevertheless, it is only a matter of time until dental digitalization technology totally replaces the analogical clinical methods. The digital …

Use of a new aneurysm clip with an inverted-spring mechanism to facilitate visual control during clip application. Technical note.

1995

✓ When operating on deep-seated cerebral aneurysms, the surgeon's visual control of clip application may be impaired by the clip holder unless adjacent structures are retracted. To improve visual control and reduce the necessity for retraction, the senior author (A.P.) developed a new concept: an aneurysm clip with an inverted-spring mechanism. The clip has two jaws that point away from the clip blades. The jaws of the clip holder articulate with the inner side of the clip jaws. By distending the jaws of the clip holder the blades of the clip are opened and vice versa. Thus the visual field increases while the clip application is proceeding. This instrumentation is useful, especially in cas…

A program for the independent verification of brachytherapy planning system calculations

2010

Purpose: In this work a spreadsheet based program is presented that to a large extent independently verifies the calculations of individual plans of brachytherapy treatment planning systems for low dose rate, high dose rate and pulsed dose rate techniques.Material and methods: The verification program has been developed based on workbooks/spreadsheets. The treatment planning system output text files are automatically loaded into the new program, allowing the use of the source coordinates, the desired calculation point coordinates, and the dwell times of a patient plan. The source strength and the reference dates are entered by the user and then dose points calculations are independently per…

Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound in Focal Liver Lesions: Where Do We Stand?

2016

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) represents a significant breakthrough in sonography, and it is being increasingly used for the evaluation of focal liver lesions (FLLs). Currently, CEUS is included as a part of the suggested diagnostic workup of FLLs, resulting in a better patient management and delivering cost-effective therapy. After a brief technical note, contrast-enhancement patterns of different types of benign and malignant FLLs, along with hepatic pseudolesions, are described and discussed based on our experience and literature data. At the same time, the most recent concepts and the use of CEUS in different clinical settings are presented.
