What is (good) practitioner research?
2016
This special issue recognizes EAPRIL as being a platform for practitioner and practice-based research and by organizing the 10th annual conference for practitioner research on improving learning in education and professional practice. Papers in this conference and in this special issue are rooted in practice-based research or practitioner research. They reflect the popularity of practitioner research in vocational teacher education and in universities of applied sciences. Reason enough for the authors of the current paper to reflect on the question: “What is practitioner research?” And, more importantly what makes good practitioner research? Challenges of the Information Society to Entrepreneurial and Technology Education in the Finnish Comprehensive School
2004
Even if the concept Information Society has versatile menings for its details, there is an approximate agreement about its general essence. There is an understanding e.g. about its emphasis on utilizing the computers, software and networks diversified and about the participatory, self originated activity culture of the citizens. As a result of these the central essence of Work has been changed from reproduction to thinking, understanding and planning. This is seen e.g. in many industries as transfer of the route works to the countries of cheap labour as increasing focus for research and development of new products in the home country. Increasing girls' interest in technology education as a way to advance women in technology
2016
Technology-oriented fields are still largely male-dominated, and an effective approach for increasing the number of women in natural science and technology careers has not yet been achieved in EU countries. A related concern, particularly in Finland, is that even though gender equality and non-discrimination have long been critical concerns in education to date there has been very little of research in Finland about girls’ motivations towards technical craft or technology education, nor about their relation to women’s career aspirations in technology-oriented fields. The present study is my contribution to the concern of getting more women into technology by investigating how to increase gi…
Searching for ways to encourage girls to study technology in primary education
2011
Introduction: Equality and non-discrimination must be actively promoted as part of education, guidance and school culture while also dismantling practices that prevent equality. All pupils must be provided with equal opportunities to acquire the knowledge and skills required in society and working life. (Ministry of Education and Culture, 2010.) Traditionally craft as a school subject in Finland has been divided into technical work and textile work, and pupils have to choose which content area to study after grade 4. Boys have mainly chosen to study technical and girls textile craft. National Framework Curricula (1994 and 2004) and the Committee on Alleviation of Segregation (2010) advocate…

The data were gathered via a questionnaire administered to graduates in business and administration (n = 1067) and in technology (n = 1087), three years after their graduation. The results showed that men were able to secure permanent and full-time employment more often than women, and men achieved better correspondence between their degree and their employment. Howev…
