Disconnected Lives: Trends in Time Spent Alone in Finland

AbstractDiscussions about social isolation have been extensive over the past few decades. A less sociable nature of social ties has been identified in Western societies. The phenomenon has been associated with demographic changes such as aging and living alone as well as changes in the use of new technologies. In this study we employ representative Finnish Time Use Surveys from three decades, 1987–1988 (n = 1887), 1999–2000 (n = 2673) and 2009–2010 (n = 1887) to examine the trends in social isolation, measured as time spent alone. <p>Floor of the mouth hemorrhage subsequent to dental implant placement in the anterior mandible</p>

Complications in dental implant surgery are possible. Bleeding complications have been described that may be serious, particularly in the floor of the mouth. We present two cases of sublingual hematomas during dental implant osteotomies that impeded but did not close the airway. The clinical courses of these patient's complications are reviewed. One patient had immediate hematoma formation while the other developed a hematoma overnight, presenting the next day. The treatment rendered was a precautionary in-hospital tracheotomy for the first patient and only compression control for the second. A new resonant Laser-SNMS system for environmental ultra-trace analysis: Installation and optimization

Abstract Localization, analysis and mobility of radioactive contaminated particles is of major concern for assessment of contamination threads and nuclear forensics. For this purpose, a new resonant Laser-SNMS system was developed and set up at the Institute for Radioecology and Radiation Protection for spatially resolved ultra-trace analysis of low concentrated radionuclides directly on environmental samples. This paper describes the adaption and combination of a dedicated Ti:sapphire laser system with a commercial TOF-SIMS instrument for resonant Laser-SNMS. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and fibrosis: correlation between late gadolinium enhancement on CMR and speckle tracking imaging using Ultrasound

Background Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most frequent genetic cardiovascular disorder and represents one of the most common cause of heart related sudden death in young adults. Myocardial fibrosis seems to be an independant predictor of adverse events including sudden death, ventricular arrhythmias and heart failure. While late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) on Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) is actually the gold-standard to detect fibrosis, new techniques are being evaluated such as 2D strain echocardiography.

Baroreflex function is usually assessed from spontaneous oscillations of blood pressure (BP) and cardiac RR interval assuming a unidirectional influence from BP to RR. However, the interaction of BP and RR is bidirectional—RR also influences BP. Novel methods based on the concept of Granger causality were recently developed for separate analysis of feedback (baroreflex) and feedforward (mechanical) interactions between RR and BP. The purpose of this study was to describe a technique to measure regional aortic compliance (AC), aortic distensibility (AD) and aortic stiffness with 1.5 T MRI in young individuals under resting conditions and during supine bicycle exercise.
