Digital Content Consumption : A Finnish-Austrian Cross-Country Analysis

2019

Online content consumption behavior has significantly changed. In particular, the growing success of legal media service providers such as Youtube, Netflix, or Spotify, has led to new modes of consumption. Research, however, still focuses predominately on illegal streaming and downloading behavior and its impact on media companies' commercial success. In order to paint a more comprehensive picture, we report on a cross-country study conducted in Austria and Finland, which explored digital content consumption habits and sources, young adults' attitudes towards illegal sources, and the importance of price, legality, ease of use as well as ease of access, and its influence on people's consumpt…

Vegetation series as a marker of interactions between rural settlements and landscape: new insights from the archaeological record in Western Sicily

2020

[EN] Plant communities are complex and dynamic elements of the landscape, intertwined with both natural factors and human activities. Vegetation series reflect the environmental characteristics of the landscape, but also the anthropic impact, one of the exogenous forces that most profoundly affects the landscape formation process. This paper aims to investigate the interactions between long-term human settlement catchment areas and vegetation series. The case study area of the Sicani Mountains (Central-Western Sicily) proved to be an ideal place to perform GIS-based spatial analysis in order to compare a data set of rural archaeological sites and land units created through the mapping of ve…

Developments in the biomechanics and equipment of Olympic cross-country skiers

2018

Source at: http://doi.org/10.3389/fphys.2018.00976 Here, our aim was to describe the major changes in cross-country (XC) skiing in recent decades, as well as potential future developments. XC skiing has been an Olympic event since the very first Winter Games in Chamonix, France, in 1924. Over the past decades, considerable developments in skiing techniques and improvements in equipment and track preparation have increased skiing speed. In contrast to the numerous investigations on the physiological determinants of successful performance, key biomechanical factors have been less explored. Today’s XC skier must master a wide range of speeds, terrains, and race distances and formats (e.g., dis…

Shortages, skills and older workers in information technology labour market of Latvia

2021

This article examines the labour market situation in the sector of information technology in Latvia, paying attention to the insufficiency of labour force due to the skills gap and employability of older workers. The article is based on application of multidisciplinary research methods including employment and skills analysis theories, policy analysis approach and qualitative in-depth open-ended stakeholders interview method. To begin with, it analyses labour market skills gap versus potential of professional mobility and offers an overview of skill classification. Secondly, it focuses on the economic indicators of the information technology industry sector in Latvia and offers reflections …

Comparison of Machine Learning Methods in Stochastic Skin Optical Model Inversion

2020

In this study, we compare six different machine learning methods in the inversion of a stochastic model for light propagation in layered media, and use the inverse models to estimate four parameters of the skin from the simulated data: melanin concentration, hemoglobin volume fraction, and thicknesses of epidermis and dermis. The aim of this study is to determine the best methods for stochastic model inversion in order to improve current methods in skin related cancer diagnostics and in the future develop a non-invasive way to measure the physical parameters of the skin based partially on the results of the study. Of the compared methods, which are convolutional neural network, multi-layer …

Microneedle-Based Delivery: An Overview of Current Applications and Trends

2020

Microneedle arrays (MNA) are considered as one of the most promising resources to achieve systemic effects by transdermal delivery of drugs. They are designed as a minimally invasive, painless system which can bypass the stratum corneum, overcoming the potential drawbacks of subcutaneous injections and other transdermal delivery systems such as chemical enhancers, nano and microparticles, or physical treatments. As a trendy field in pharmaceutical and biomedical research, its applications are constantly evolving, even though they are based on very well-established techniques. The number of molecules administered by MNA are also increasing, with insulin and vaccines administration being the …

Fate of organic pollutants after sewage sludge spreading on agricultural soils: a 30-years field-scale recording

2006

Le DOI mentionné dans l'article 10.2166/WPT.2007.008 ne fonctionne pas; International audience; Toxic organic compounds, such as the surfactants linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) and nonylphenol polyethoxylates (NPE), Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and residues derived from plastics (PAE-phthalates) end up in sewage sludge. In order to evaluate and quantify the potential environmental risks associated with the xenobiotic introduction into biological life cycle, the EU BIOWASTE project (QLK5-CT-2002-01138) devotes one task to the study of the fate of xenobiotic in a sandy soil after sludge spreading on a 30-year field-scale record experiment. Experimental maize crop fields from Bo…

A fluorescence study of the loading and time stability of doxorubicin in sodium cholate/PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymer mixed micelles

2019

Abstract Hypothesis Doxorubicin hydrochloride (DX) is one of the most powerful anticancer agents though its clinical use is impaired by severe undesired side effects. DX encapsulation in nanocarrier systems has been introduced as a mean to reduce its toxicity. Micelles of the nonionic triblock copolymers of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) (PEO-PPO-PEO), are very promising carrier systems. The positive charge of DX confines the drug to the hydrophilic corona region of the micelles. The use of mixed micelles of PEO-PPO-PEO copolymers and a negatively charged bile salt should favour the solubilization of DX in the apolar core region of the micelles. Experiments We st…
