Laughing with machines : philosophical analysis on the preconditions of sense of humour for machines

2021

This article will analyse the preconditions of sense of humour for artificial intelligence. Can artificial intelligence have a sense of humour? Is there a difference between human and machine laughter? Some machines already fulfil certain conditions which are associated with the human sense of humour: on the most superficial level machines appear to laugh and produce jokes, and they recognize sarcasm and punchlines, and they can evaluate funniness. In short, artificial intelligence is already able to recognize humour, and reacts to it accordingly. Furthermore, people laugh with humorous machines. However, it is still uncertain whether artificial intelligence can have a sense of humour or no…

Feature selection for distance-based regression: An umbrella review and a one-shot wrapper

2023

Feature selection (FS) may improve the performance, cost-efficiency, and understandability of supervised machine learning models. In this paper, FS for the recently introduced distance-based supervised machine learning model is considered for regression problems. The study is contextualized by first providing an umbrella review (review of reviews) of recent development in the research field. We then propose a saliency-based one-shot wrapper algorithm for FS, which is called MAS-FS. The algorithm is compared with a set of other popular FS algorithms, using a versatile set of simulated and benchmark datasets. Finally, experimental results underline the usefulness of FS for regression, confirm…

Strategic cyber threat intelligence : Building the situational picture with emerging technologies

2020

In 2019, e-criminals adopted new tactics to demand enormous ransoms from large organizations by using ransomware, a phenomenon known as “big game hunting.” Big game hunting is an excellent example of a sophisticated and coordinated modern cyber-attack that has a significant impact on the target. Cyber threat intelligence (CTI) increases the possibilities to detect and prevent cyber-attacks and gives defenders more time to act. CTI is a combination of incident response and traditional intelligence. Intelligence modifies raw data into information for decision-making and action. CTI consists of strategic, operational, or tactical intelligence on cyber threats. Security event monitoring, event-…

The Current State of Industrial Practice in Artificial Intelligence Ethics

2020

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems become increasingly widespread, we have begun to witness various failures highlighting issues in these systems. These incidents have sparked public discussion related to AI ethics and further accelerated the on-going academic discussion in the area. High-level guidelines and tools for managing AI ethics have been introduced to help industry organizations make more ethical AI systems, but we currently know little about the state of industrial practice. Have these guidelines been adopted by the software industry for developing AI solutions? Are these failures that make the news just the tip of the iceberg? We provide insights into the current state of p…

Ethics of Artificial Intelligence : Research Challenges and Potential Solutions

2020

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a rapidly emerging paradigm with many applications in healthcare, industries, and smart cities. However, this rise of global interest in AI has fueled a renewed interest from the public sector and global policymakers. As AI networks (e.g., chatbots, automation systems, and helping agents) are paving their way as interactive household items, a critically important research issue is understanding the ethical impact of these autonomous agents. What is the explanation of the AI decision-making process? What are the legal, societal, and moral consequences of these decisions and actions? Should these AI systems be allowed to make decisions for human beings and to w…

Ethical User stories : Industrial study

2022

Publisher Copyright: © 2022 Copyright for this paper by its authors In Port terminals a progressive change is underway in digitalizing traditional systems to SMART systems with the aid of AI. This study follows one of such progressions, the SMARTER project. SMARTER is a sub research and development project of the Sea for Value program of DIMECC company, Finland to create replicable models for digitalization for future terminals which involves the use of AI enabled tools. AI and Autonomous Systems (AS) are the direction that software systems are taking today. But due to ethical challenges involved in the use of AI systems and increased emphasis on ethical practices in the use and design of A…

Implementing Ethics in AI: Initial Results of an Industrial Multiple Case Study

2019

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly widespread in system development endeavors. As AI systems affect various stakeholders due to their unique nature, the growing influence of these systems calls for ethical considerations. Academic discussion and practical examples of autonomous system failures have highlighted the need for implementing ethics in software development. However, research on methods and tools for implementing ethics into AI system design and development in practice is still lacking. This paper begins to address this focal problem by providing elements needed for producing a baseline for ethics in AI based software development. We do so by means of an industri…

Ethically Aligned Design of Autonomous Systems : Industry Viewpoint and an Empirical Study

2019

Progress in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been accelerating rapidly in the past two decades. Various autonomous systems from purely digital ones to autonomous vehicles are being developed and deployed out on the field. As these systems exert a growing impact on society, ethics in relation to artificial intelligence and autonomous systems have recently seen growing attention among academia. However, the current literature on the topic has focused largely on theoretical contributions, and there is a gap between research and practice in the area. Though this gap has been acknowledged in existing studies, the exact issues resulting in this gap remain blurred. In order to better …

Implementing AI Ethics: Making Sense of the Ethical Requirements

2023

Society’s increasing dependence on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI-enabled systems require a more practical approach from software engineering (SE) executives in middle and higher-level management to improve their involvement in implementing AI ethics by making ethical requirements part of their management practices. However, research indicates that most work on implementing ethical requirements in SE management primarily focuses on technical development, with scarce findings for middle and higher-level management. We investigate this by interviewing ten Finnish SE executives in middle and higher-level management to examine how they consider and implement ethical requirements. We use et…

Requirement analysis for an artificial intelligence model for the diagnosis of the COVID-19 from chest X-ray data

2021

There are multiple papers published about different AI models for the COVID-19 diagnosis with promising results. Unfortunately according to the reviews many of the papers do not reach the level of sophistication needed for a clinically usable model. In this paper I go through multiple review papers, guidelines, and other relevant material in order to generate more comprehensive requirements for the future papers proposing a AI based diagnosis of the COVID-19 from chest X-ray data (CXR). Main findings are that a clinically usable AI needs to have an extremely good documentation, comprehensive statistical analysis of the possible biases and performance, and an explainability module.
