Optical peregrine soliton generation in standard telecommunication fibers

By combining real time characterization with cut-back measurements, we provide the first direct observation of Peregrine-like soliton longitudinal evolution dynamics and report a new effect associated with the breakup of a Peregrine soliton into two subpulses, each providing similar characteristics of localization upon finite background. Experimental results are in good agreement with simulations.
Theory of Raman effect on solitons in optical fibre systems: impact and control processes for high-speed long-distance transmission lines

We examine the effects of stimulated Raman scattering on ultra-short pulses propagating in optical fibre systems. We demonstrate that the existing theories for the Raman-induced soliton self-frequency shift give consistent results in a restricted domain of pulse width which excludes important practical applications to high-speed soliton transmission systems. We present a general theory for the soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS), which applies to any pulse whose spectral bandwidth lies within the third-order telecommunication window. The nonlinear optical loop mirror: soliton and noise-like pulse emission in a figure-eight fiber laser

In this article, a symmetrical nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) exhibiting a polarization-dependent transmission is evaluated to generate optical pulse emission in a figure-eight fiber laser in the soliton and noise-like pulse (NLP) regimes. The NOLM structure relies on a 50:50 fiber coupler, a loop with highly twisted single-mode optical fiber and a quarter-wave retarder (QWR) to break the polarization asymmetry. The pulse operation regime is determined by properly adjusting the NOLM low-power transmission, which is easily realized by the rotation of the QWR angle. Optimization of wavelength division multiplexing in N×160Gbit/s terrestrial transmission systems

Abstract We analyze, from an engineering viewpoint, the prospects of an exploitable upgrade of terrestrial fiber systems based on standard monomode fiber and dispersion compensating units, for future N × 160 Gbit/s transmission systems. We show that dispersion swing, average dispersion and input pulse power are the key parameters that govern the system performances. We show that whenever the dispersion swing is arranged in a symmetrical setup and the compensation ratio is optimized accordingly, one may obtain a significant improvement of the transmission performances.

The generation of multiple tones using four-wave mixing (FWM) has been exploited for many applications, ranging from wavelength conversion to frequency comb generation. FWM is a coherent process, meaning that its dynamics strongly depends on the relative phase among the waves involved. The coherent nature of FWM has been exploited for phase-sensitive processing in different waveguide structures, but it has never been studied in integrated microresonators. We re-evaluate our model predictions in Phys. Rev. D 79, 013002 (2009) for different observables in neutrino induced coherent pion production. This comes as a result of the new improved fit to old bubble chamber data of the dominant axial C_5^A nucleon-to-Delta form factor. We find an increase of 20%-30% in the values for the total cross sections. Uncertainties induced by the errors in the determination of C_5^A are computed. Our new results turn out to be compatible within about $1\sigma$ with the former ones. We also stress the existing tension between the recent experimental determination of the \sigma(CC coh \pi^+)}/\sigma(NC coh \pi^0)} $ ratio by the SciBooNE Collaboration and the the…

An application of the Monte Carlo method to the diffusion of neutrons passing through a slab of a moderating material is presented. This method can be used as a tool to improve the student's comprehension of the statistical properties of many particle systems, showing the necessity of simulation procedures to obtain information on the expected results of real experiments. We have chosen a very simple example to illustrate it: the evaluation of the transmission, reflection and absorption probabilities of a monochromatic beam of neutrons diffusing through a slab of a moderator material. Bloch analysis of finite periodic microring chains

We apply Bloch analysis to the study of finite periodic cascading of microring resonators. Diagonalization of the standard transfer matrix approach not only allows to find an exact analytic expression for transmission and reflection, but also to derive a closed form solution for the field in every point of the structure. To give more physical insight we analyze the main features of the transmission resonances in a finite chain and we give some hints for their experimental verification

Study of the D*ρ system using QCD sum rules

In this talk I present a study of the $D^* \rho$ system made by using the method of QCD sum rules. Considering isospin and spin projectors, we investigate the different configurations and obtain three $D^*$ mesons with isospin $I=1/2$, spin $S=0$, $1$, $2$ and with masses $2500\pm 67$ MeV, $2523\pm60$ MeV, and $2439\pm119$ MeV, respectively. The last state can be related to $D^*_2(2460)$ (spin 2) listed by the Particle Data Group, while one of the first two might be associated with $D^*(2640)$, whose spin-parity is unknown. In the case of $I=3/2$ we also find evidences of three states with spin 0, 1 and 2, respectively, with masses $2467\pm82$ MeV, $2420\pm128$ MeV, and $2550\pm56$ MeV.
