Mobile Communities in Developing Countries
2010
The number of mobile devices has exceeded four billions and is still growing. Especially in developing countries mobile devices are often the only access to Internet and digital services. In the most developed countries laptops, Wi-Fi and faster and faster wireless telecom networks have for long time made mobile access to various digital services possible while on the move. Still, large and instant mobile communities can only rely on more portable devices, such as mobile phones. In this paper we will analyze various mobile communities and the support they are offered by the social media sites. We will discuss the phenomena encountered in developing countries, like how the mobile technology …
Characteristics of early adopters in mobile communications markets
2007
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to study consumers' adoption of mobile communications services, and to explore common denominators uniting those most likely to be early adopters; thereby, to help practitioners to predict early adoption and segment the market.Design/methodology/approachData were collected by postal questionnaire from 26 per cent of a sample of 3,000 customers of a telecommunications service provider in Finland, stratified into three sub‐samples according to type of usage. For this paper, the returns from the two sub‐samples with the highest rates of use were analysed.FindingsPrevious experience of related types of communications services significantly and positively infl…
Mobile communication and the family: Asian experiences in technology domestication
2016
Amidst a record influx of refugees from the Middle East and Africa into Europe, it is puzzling to notice that many are making their journeys with almost nothing but a smartphone. Families are left ...
Modelling Mobile Encounter Networks
2006
This article presents mobile encounter networks, which emerge when mobile devices come across each other and form a temporary connection between them using a common short-range radio technology. Local information exchanges between mobile devices results in a broadcast diffusion of information to other users of the network with a delay. In addition to presenting the concept of mobile encounter networks, we also provide an abstract method for describing the information diffusion process inside them. peerReviewed
Mobile radio channel models for present and future wireless communication systems
2008
From the beginnings of mobile communication, there is a high demand for realistic models for mobile fading channels. The reason for the demand is that channel models are essential for the performance evaluation, parameter optimisation, and test of mobile communication systems. Design methods for mobile fading channels are therefore of great importance for system engineers who are involved in the development of present and future mobile communication systems. In this presentation, an overview will be given about several design methodologies commonly used for the design of mobile radio channel models in present and future wireless communication systems. All presented channel models have in co…
An efficient Chinese remainder theorem based node capture resilience scheme for Mobile WSNs
2010
Node capture attack is a critical issue in Mobile WSNs where attacker-controlled replicas may act maliciously. In this paper, we present a novel Chinese remainder theorem based node capture resilience scheme that can be utilized to discover and revoke captured nodes. Moreover, our scheme can limit the ability of captured nodes to further compromise forward security, backward security, and launch collusion attacks. Detailed analysis shows that our scheme indeed achieves the expected design goals.
Modeling of mobility and groups in inter-vehicular MANET-based networks
2007
This paper evaluates the behavior of mobile ad hoc networks when group mobility is involved. We concentrate on group mobility because road vehicles tend to form groups or fleets whose behavior depends on the behavior of the close-by vehicles. We propose four different group mobility models and present a mobility pattern generator, called grcmob that we designed to be used with the ns-2 simulator. We evaluate the performance of vehicular ad hoc networks under a wide number of scenarios using both TCP and UDP data traffic. We show that the number of groups is more important than the number of nodes and that the impact of area size is almost negligible. We also reveal that the mixture of inter…
Group mobility impact over TCP and CBR traffic in mobile ad hoc networks
2004
We present an analysis of the effect that mobility models have over the performance of a mobile ad hoc network. We concentrate on group mobility because there is a growing attention on the development and evaluation of MANET's approach applied to personal area networks (PANs), especially based on Bluetooth technology. We investigate the effect that the mobility model has on the performance of CBR traffic and TCP traffic. We propose four different group mobility models and describe a mobility pattern generator called grcmob to be used with the ns-2 simulator. We perform a thorough evaluation of a MANET behavior using as a reference the behavior obtained with the random waypoint mobility mode…

Sources of Dissatisfaction: Mobile Interaction with the Real World and Other Mobile Internet Applications
2013
Current consumer-level mobile Internet applications involve many potential sources of dissatisfaction. Studying these sources is necessary, especially for newer application areas such as mobile interaction with the real world. This study combined previous studies to form a categorization framework of dissatisfaction sources and gathered qualitative data using critical incident technique and overall evaluation questionnaire to describe the sources in detail. This article proposes insights into characteristics, temporality, and combinations of sources. peerReviewed
