Reliability and validity of the form 90 interview.

<i>Objective:</i> Alcohol consumption is a central variable in substance abuse research and treatment. The study reports the psychometric characteristics of the German version of the Form 90 interview for the assessment of recent alcohol consumption. <i>Method:</i> Reliability was evaluated in a test-retest study (7 days) with 30 consecutively admitted psychiatric inpatients with alcohol dependence. Aims: To assess the role of smoking on treatment outcome in quitting alcoholics on the background of the priming or coping hypothesis (Rohsenow et al. , [1997][1]). Methods: Data sets of placebo treated patients of the German phase III trial of naltrexone (Gastpar et al. , [2002][2]) and of acamprosate treated patients of a German phase IV trial Soyka et al. , [2002][3]) were reanalyzed. Adenylyl cyclase activity is increased in younger, but decreased in older, alcoholic patients after detoxification.

Acute and chronic administration of ethanol leads to alterations of the adenylyl cyclase (AC) signal transduction pathway. This study examined whether the formation of cAMP by AC in lymphocytes correlates with age in alcoholic patients and in healthy controls. Blood was drawn for preparation of lymphocyte membranes and for determination of basal, GTPgammaS-stimulated, and forskolin-stimulated AC activity from 68 actively drinking alcoholic patients (age, mean +/- SD: 45 +/- 10; range: 26-69 years) after ethanol detoxification.
