The Structure and Behavioural Effects of Revealed Social Identity Preferences

A large body of evidence shows that social identity affects behaviour. However, our understanding of the substantial variation of these behavioural effects is still limited. We use a novel laboratory experiment to measure differences in preferences for social identities as a potential source of behavioural heterogeneity. Facing a trade-off between monetary payments and belonging to different groups, individuals are willing to forego significant earnings to avoid belonging to certain groups. This chapter aims to articulate new ethical possibilities made apparent during experiences of chronic pain, and suggest an ethics of temporality apparent in the mother–child relation. I also aim to bring an understanding of the complexity and diversity of subjectivities in pain and its impact on its social, intersubjective environment. The narratives of mothers who have experienced chronic pain for more than three months help articulate a gap found in the Western model of medical knowledge. Optimal temporal resolution for detailed studies of cloud-enhanced sunlight (Overirradiance)

Enhancement of sunlight by clouds can lead to irradiance peaks much exceeding the extraterrestrial levels - close to 2 suns near the Equator and at least 1.5 suns at latitudes of about 60°. Some extreme overirradiance events can last many minutes, but durations in the order of 1 second are also possible. The present paper reports the shortest bursts recorded in Southern Norway in the years 2012 and 2013. Our records of 10-millisecond resolution from 2012 show that the optimal instantaneous irradiance sampling interval is less than 0.15 s at the present test site, while the optimal averaging time is less than 0.13 s. Rapid environmental fluctuations are ubiquitous in the wild, yet majority of experimental studies mostly consider effects of slow fluctuations on organism. To test the evolutionary consequences of fast fluctuations, we conducted nine independent experimental evolution experiments with bacteria. Experimental conditions were same for all species, and we allowed them to evolve either in fluctuating temperature alternating rapidly between 20°C and 40°C or at constant 30°C temperature.
