Three-dimensional multiple-particle tracking with nanometric precision over tunable axial ranges

2017

The precise localization of nanometric objects in three dimensions is essential to identify functional diffusion mechanisms in complex systems at the cellular or molecular level. However, most optical methods can achieve high temporal resolution and high localization precision only in two dimensions or over a limited axial (z) range. Here we develop a novel wide-field detection system based on an electrically tunable lens that can track multiple individual nanoscale emitters in three dimensions over a tunable axial range with nanometric localization precision. The optical principle of the technique is based on the simultaneous acquisition of two images with an extended depth of field while …

Elongated styloid process: An epidemiological study on digital panoramic radiographs

2017

Background The styloid process is a projecton of the temporal bone, its lenght is between 20 to 30 mm, when it is longer than 30 mm it is defined elongated styloid process. The aim of this study is an epidemiological evaluation of 1003 digital panoramic radiographs in an Italian population between 5 and 90 years old. Material and methods This is a retrospective analysis and the radiographs were selected from the Complex Operating Unit of Dentistry of Padua University Hospital database. The radiographs were performed using a Sirona Ortophos XG and the styloid process length was measured using the measuring tool of Sidexis Software. It was measured from the point where it left the temporal bo…

Establishing and validating a new source analysis method using phase.

2017

Electroencephalogram (EEG) measures the brain oscillatory activity non-invasively. The localization of deep brain generators of the electric fields is essential for understanding neuronal function in healthy humans and for damasking specific regions that cause abnormal activity in patients with neurological disorders. The aim of this study was to test whether the phase estimation from scalp data can be reliably used to identify the number of dipoles in source analyses. The steps performed included: i) modeling different phasic oscillatory signals using auto-regressive processes at a particular frequency, ii) simulation of two different noises, namely white and colored noise, having differen…

Complexity analysis of cortical surface detects changes in future Alzheimer's disease converters

2017

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurological disorder that creates neurodegenerative changes at several structural and functional levels in human brain tissue. The fractal dimension (FD) is a quantitative parameter that characterizes the morphometric variability of the human brain. In this study, we investigate spherical harmonic-based FD (SHFD), thickness, and local gyrification index (LGI) to assess whether they identify cortical surface abnormalities toward the conversion to AD. We study 33 AD patients, 122 mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients (50 MCI converters and 29 MCI nonconverters), and 32 healthy controls (HC). SHFD, thickness, and LGI methodology allowed us to perform not only …

Networking Brains: Modeling Spatial Relationships of the Cerebral Cortex

2017

Brain mapping has always been a priority in neurobiology and evolutionary neuroanatomy. In the last century, methodological issues and technical advances have generated a vivid debate on the parcellation and functions of the cortical territories. Brain structure is generally analyzed by considering the network of connections associated with neural pathways. Nonetheless, there is still a major debate on the recognition of the spatial and geometrical components of the cerebral cortex. The maps produced by Korbinian Brodmann in the early twentieth century on the basis of histological patterns represented a pioneering and decisive step in this sense, being a reference until the present day. Net…

Elongated styloid process evaluation on digital panoramic radiograph in a North Italian population

2017

Background The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of elongated styloid process in digital panoramic radiographs in a North Italian population in relation to age, gender and side. Material and methods This study was performed as a retrospective analysis on digital panoramic radiographs of 600 (271 males and 329 females) Italian patients between 6 and 87 years old. The styloid process length were measured using the measuring tool of Sidexis Software. It was measured from the point where it left the temporal bone plate to its tip. Styloid processes measuring more than 30 mm were considered elongated. Chi-squared and Fisher tests were used and the test is considered significant if …

Abstract. Cirrus clouds and their potential formation regions, so-called ice supersaturated regions (ISSRs), with values of relative humidity with respect to ice exceeding 100 %, occur frequently in the tropopause region. It is assumed that ISSRs and cirrus clouds can change the tropopause structure by diabatic processes, driven by latent heating due to phase transition and interaction with radiation. For many research questions, a three-dimensional picture including a sufficient temporal resolution of the water vapour fields in the tropopause region is required. This requirement is fulfilled nowadays by reanalysis products such as the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECM…

Eating chocolate, smelling perfume or watching video advertisement: Does it make any difference on emotional states measured at home using facial exp…

2019

Type d'article : méthodologie, recherche et revue.; International audience; The recording of facial expressions allows for implicit measurement of emotional states over time. The present study investigated whether these recordings can be acquired, using computer webcams, when testing products at home. Three types of product spaces (chocolates, perfumes and video advertisements) were evaluated at home by 44 subjects using a facial expression measurement protocol. Each product space was composed of three products. The first objective examined the feasibility of such a home-based protocol. The second objective investigated whether several products in the same product space could be characteriz…

Sensory exploration of the freshness sensation in plain yoghurts and yoghurt-like products

2013

WOS: 000324008600021 ; http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0950329313001092; International audience; The term "freshness sensation" is used by consumers for characterizing some plain yoghurts and yoghurt-like products. This study consisted in an investigation of this sensation aiming at determining its underlying sensory attributes. First, two focus groups of consumers were conducted to open up the framework. A set of plain yoghurts and yoghurt-like products, both commercial and experimental, was then subjected to sensory analysis. The samples were sorted by means of a free sorting task, and further scored for the intensity of their freshness sensation and their liking, by 72 …

The Dynamics of Aroma Release during the Consumption of Candies with Different Structures

2014

This chapter aims at investigating the role of candy texture on the dynamics of aroma release using dynamic instrumental and sensory methods. The highest in vivo release, monitored using proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS), was obtained for the 2% gelatin sample for all aroma compounds. The temporal dominance of sensations (TDS) method highlighted that the dominant sensation for the liquid product was the “strawberry” note. For other products, the temporal characteristics of perceptions were more complex. Data highlighted that aroma release resulted from interaction between product properties and oral behavior. Some relations with the dynamics of perception have been establi…
