Predictors of Left Ventricular Hypertrophy in Hypertensive Patients with Normal ECG

2011

Introduction: Early identification of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in hypertensive patients is of great importance for correct stratification of cardiovascular (CV) risk. It is well known that ECGhas low sensibility in detecting LVH, while echocardiography, for organizational difficulties, cannot be performed routinely. Aim: To evaluate the prevalence of LVH and of anomalies of diastolic function in a group of hypertensive patients free of diabetes, CV diseases, and with normal ECG. Methods: We excluded patients with CV diseases, diabetes, chronic kidney disease (CKD), or having ECG-LVH or other ECG anomalies. Then, we enrolled 310 hypertensive patients (mean age 48 years). All enroll…

The quality of life of patients with arterial hypertension in the bio-psycho-social dimension of health. Review of the literature

2022

Arterial hypertension (AH) is the cause of a reduction in the quality of life (QoL), influencing not only its subjective dimension, related to the deterioration of well-being but also the objective dimension, making it impossible to fulfil the current social functions and reducing the individual’s ability to adapt or worsening the economic status due to the need to resign from work and social isolation. The study aims to present, based on a literature review, the QoL of patients with AH in the bio-psycho-social dimension of health. These 3 health components affect the course of the disease and at the same time determine the QoL of patients.

The Global Blood Pressure Screening Campaign of the International Society of Hypertension

2020

Elevated blood pressure remains the single biggest risk factor contributing to the global burden of disease and mortality. May Measurement Month is an annual global screening campaign aiming to improve awareness of blood pressure at the individual and population level. Adults (≥18 years) recruited through opportunistic sampling were screened at sites in 92 countries during May 2019. Ideally, 3 blood pressure readings were measured for each participant, and data on lifestyle factors and comorbidities were collected. Hypertension was defined as a systolic blood pressure ≥140 mm Hg, or a diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mm Hg (mean of the second and third readings) or taking antihypertensive medic…

Systemic vascular resistance predicts the development of hypertension : the cardiovascular risk in young Finns study

2020

To study whether systemic hemodynamics, especially systemic vascular resistance, predicts the development of hypertension and improves the risk prediction of incident hypertension beyond common risk factors in the risk models in young adults. Typical risk factors for hypertension in the risk prediction models (systolic and diastolic blood pressure, parental history of hypertension, age, sex, body-mass index, smoking), laboratory values (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, insulin, C-reactive protein), heart rate (HR), stroke index (SI), and systemic vascular resistance index (SVRI) calculated by whole-body impedance cardiography…

Should inflammatory pathways be targeted for the prevention and treatment of hypertension?

2019

Hypertension is the most common modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD)1 and is a leading cause of death globally.2 Hypertension and CVD share common antecedent risk factors which include physical inactivity, obesity and excess alcohol intake.3 Though these established risk factors explain a large proportion of hypertension risk, its pathogenesis is still not fully established as it appears that other additional lifestyle and genetic factors may be involved. There is therefore a need to identify and evaluate putative risk factors that may increase our knowledge of hypertension development, may have causal or predictive relevance, and which will help develop preventive and ma…

A non-canonical chemical feedback self-limits nitric oxide-cyclic GMP signaling in health and disease

2018

Endothelial nitric oxide (NO) stimulates the heme protein, soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) to form vasoprotective cyclic GMP (cGMP). In different disease states such as pulmonary hypertension, NO-cGMP signaling is pharmacologically augmented, yet the pathomechanisms leading to its dysregulation are incompletely understood. Here we show in pulmonary artery endothelial cells that endogenous NO or NO donor compounds acutely stimulate sGC activity, but chronically down-regulate both sGC protein and cGMP formation. Surprisingly, this endogenous feedback mechanism was independent of canonical cGMP signaling via cGMP-dependent protein kinase. It did not involve thiol-dependent modulation, a process…

Nitric oxide metabolites (nitrite and nitrate) in several clinical condition.

2013

We determined the concentration of nitric oxide metabolites (NO2-+NO3-), expressed as NOx, in several clinical conditions. Regarding this, we have examined 25 subjects with arterial hypertension, 41 subjects with chronic kidney disease in conservative treatment, 106 subjects with metabolic syndrome subdivided according to the presence (n = 43) or not (n = 63) of diabetes mellitus, 48 subjects with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), 14 women with systemic sclerosis complicated with Raynaud's phenomenon, 42 dialyzed subjects and 105 young subjects with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). In subjects with arterial hypertension, chronic kidney disease, metabolic syndrome, systemic sclerosi…
