Electron elastic scattering off a Tensor-polarized Deuterium Internal Target

2019

The tensor analyzing power Γ20 in elastic electron-deuteron scattering has been measured in the four momentum transfer region between 1.4 and 3.2 fm~l using the Internal Target Facility at NIKHEF. Tensor-polarized deuterium is produced in an Atomic Beam Source and injected into a storage cell. Scattered electrons and recoil deuterons were detected in coincidence with two large acceptance nonmagnetic detectors.

Tuning the collective decay of two entangled emitters by means of a nearby surface

2017

We consider the radiative properties of a system of two identical correlated atoms interacting with the electromagnetic field in its vacuum state in the presence of a generic dielectric environment. We suppose that the two emitters are prepared in a symmetric or antisymmetric superposition of one ground state and one excited state and we evaluate the transition rate to the collective ground state, showing distinctive cooperative radiative features. Using a macroscopic quantum electrodynamics approach to describe the electromagnetic field, we first obtain an analytical expression for the decay rate of the two entangled two-level atoms in terms of the Green's tensor of the generic external en…

Numerical Simulations of the Hydrodynamics of the Abdominal Aorta Aneurysm (AAA) Using a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Code with Deformable Wall Pr…

2018

We present some preliminary results of the numerical simulations of the hydrodynamic characteristics of an abdominal aorta aneurysm (AAA) patient specific test case. Images of the AAA lumen have been acquired in 10 discrete time-steps through a stabilized cardiac cycle by electrocardiogram-gated computer tomography angiography, and are used to approximate the in vivo, time dependent kinematic fields of the (internal) arterial wall. The flow field is simulated by a Smoothed Particle SPH numerical model, where the kinematics of the boundary of the computational domain (the internal aortic vessel) is the one computed by the above procedure. The outputs of the SPH model, i.e., pressure and flow…

Influence of correlations between stresses on calculated fatigue life of machine elements

1996

The correlation between components of the random stress tensor and its influence on the calculated fatigue life of machine elements were analysed. Three covariance matrices of components of biaxial stress state were considered. They were determined from measurements of strains in an element of a vibrating screen for aggregate, in the back wall of a bus, and in a welded element of excavator fittings. Calculations were made according to four criteria of multiaxial random fatigue. Cycles were counted with the rainflow method, and damage was cumulated with the Palmgren-Miner hypothesis. It was found that convariances of random stress state components strongly influence the calculated fatigue li…

A study on the influence of permanent magnet dimensions and stator core structures on the torque of the disc-type brushless DC motor

2000

This paper presents a three-dimensional analysis of the magnetic field distribution for a disc-type, double-sided, permanent magnet, brushless dc motor with a toroidal stator core. Calculations are carried out using the OPERA (3D) package with the TOSCA module. The electromagnetic torque is determined from the Maxwell stress tensor. For comparison, various permanent magnet dimensions and slotless vs. quasi-slotted stator cores are analysed, with an iron powder-resin composite effectively used to imitate the slotted core. The torque ripple is shown to be effectively reduced by appropriate permanent magnet dimensions. The simulation results are in good agreement with experimental data obtaine…

Hybrid Procedure for Automated Detection of Cracking with 3D Pavement Data

2016

Pavement cracks are considered a major indicator of pavement performance. Because traditional manual crack surveys are dangerous, time consuming, and expensive, technologies have been developed to collect high-speed pavement images, and numerous algorithms have been proposed to detect cracks on pavement surface. The latest PaveVision3D Ultra system (3D Ultra) has been implemented to achieve 30-kHz three-dimensional (3D) scanning rate for 1-mm resolution pavement surface data at highway speed up to 100 km/h (60  mi/h). This paper presents the application of a hybrid procedure for automated crack detection on 3D pavement data collected using 3D Ultra. The procedure combines three different me…

A disc-type motor with co-axial flux in the stator; - influence of magnetic circuit parameters on the torque

2002

This paper presents a three-dimensional analysis of the magnetic field distribution for a three-phase, disc-type, permanent-magnet, brushless DC motor with co-axial flux in the stator. Calculations are carried out using the 3-D finite element method (FEM). The electromagnetic torque is determined from the Maxwell stress tensor. For comparison, various dimensions of permanent magnets, pole shoes and air gap are analysed. It is shown that the ripple-cogging torque can be effectively reduced by an appropriate permanent magnet width and air-gap length. The simulation results are in good agreement with experimental data obtained from the prototype motor.

Covariance between components of biaxial stress state in fatigue life calculations

1992

In this paper influence of correlalions between components of random stress tensor on the calculated fatigue life of the machine element has been analysed. Two groups of covariance matrices for components of biaxial stress state were considered. The first group was arbitrarily assumed and the second one was determined on the basis of the measured strains in the element of the vibrating screen for aggregate. Computer simulation was realized with four criteria of multiaxial random fatigue. Cycles were counted with the method of rain flow and damages were cumulated according to Palmgren-Miner hypothesis. It has been shown that covariances between components of stress state tensor strongly infl…

Field‐circuit analysis of construction modifications of a torus‐type PMDC motor

2003

This paper presents the field‐circuit analysis of a disc‐type torus DC motor with permanent magnets. Calculations of the magnetic field are carried out using the finite element method (FEM) in the 3D space. The integral quantities like the ripple‐cogging torque, back electromotive force, flux linkage, self and mutual inductances of the winding are analyzed. The electromagnetic torque is comparatively determined from the Maxwell stress tensor and co‐energy methods. Based on the 3D magnetic field calculations, the lumped‐parameter model of the tested motor is constructed, taking into account an electronic power converter as well. For comparison, various permanent magnet widths and teeth thick…

Comparison of the Rain Flow Algorithm and the Spectral Method for Fatigue Life Determination Under Uniaxial and Multiaxial Random Loading

2008

This paper presents the strain energy density parameter used for fatigue life calculation under random loading by two methods. The first method is based on schematization of energy parameter histories with the rain flow algorithm. The other one is based on moments of the power spectral density function of the energy parameter. The experimental data of fatigue tests of 10HNAP steel under constant amplitude and random uniaxial loading with non-gaussion probability distribution, zero mean value, and wide-band frequency spectrum used for comparison of the rain flow algorithm and the spectral method gave satisfactory results. Next, histories of the random stress tensor with normal probability di…
