Influence of drag and turbulence modelling on CFD predictions of solid liquid suspensions in stirred vessels

2014

Abstract Suspensions of solid particles into liquids within industrial stirred tanks are frequently carried out at an impeller speed lower than the minimum required for complete suspension conditions. This choice allows power savings which usually overcome the drawback of a smaller particle-liquid interfacial area. Despite this attractive economical perspective, only limited attention has been paid so far to the modelling of the partial suspension regime. In the present work two different baffled tanks stirred by Rushton turbines were simulated by employing the Eulerian-Eulerian Multi Fluid Model (MFM) along with either the Sliding Grid algorithm (transient simulations) or the Multiple Refe…

Adiabatic versus non-adiabatic electron transfer at 2D electrode materials

2021

2D electrode materials are often deployed on conductive supports for electrochemistry and there is a great need to understand fundamental electrochemical processes in this electrode configuration. Here, an integrated experimental-theoretical approach is used to resolve the key electronic interactions in outer-sphere electron transfer (OS-ET), a cornerstone elementary electrochemical reaction, at graphene as-grown on a copper electrode. Using scanning electrochemical cell microscopy, and co-located structural microscopy, the classical hexaamineruthenium (III/II) couple shows the ET kinetics trend: monolayer > bilayer > multilayer graphene. This trend is rationalized quantitatively through th…

Magnetically induced currents and aromaticity in ligand-stabilized Au and AuPt superatoms

2021

Understanding magnetically induced currents (MICs) in aromatic or metallic nanostructures is crucial for interpreting local magnetic shielding and NMR data. Direct measurements of the induced currents have been successful only in a few planar molecules but their indirect effects are seen in NMR shifts of probe nuclei. Here, we have implemented a numerically efficient method to calculate gauge-including MICs in the formalism of auxiliary density functional theory. We analyze the currents in two experimentally synthesized gold-based, hydrogen-containing ligand-stabilized nanoclusters [HAu9(PPh3)8]2+ and [PtHAu8(PPh3)8]+. Both clusters have a similar octet configuration of Au(6s)-derived deloc…

Efficient boundary integral-resonant mode expansion method implementation for full-wave analysis of passive devices based on circular waveguides with…

2013

In this study, the efficient full-wave analysis of passive devices composed of circular and arbitrarily-shaped waveguides is considered. For this purpose, the well-known boundary integral-resonant mode expansion (BI RME) method has been properly extended. Circular waveguides are used for resonant mode expansion, whereas the arbitrary contour is defined by any combination of straight, circular and elliptical segments, thus allowing the exact representation of the most widely used geometries. The proposed algorithm extends previous implementations of the BI RME method based on circular waveguides by considering circular and elliptical arcs for defining arbitrary geometries. Similarly, it allo…

A group-based wireless body sensors network using energy harvesting for soccer team monitoring

2016

[EN] In team-based sports, it is difficult to monitor physical state of each athlete during the match. Wearable body sensors with wireless connections allow having low-power and low-size devices, that may use energy harvesting, but with low radio coverage area but the main issue comes from the mobility. This paper presents a wireless body sensors network for soccer team players' monitoring. Each player has a body sensor network that use energy harvesting and each player will be a node in the wireless sensor network. This proposal is based on the zone mobility of the players and their dynamism. It allows knowing the physical state of each player during the whole match. Having fast updates an…

Graphical Structure of Attraction Basins of Hidden Chaotic Attractors : The Rabinovich-Fabrikant System

2019

The attraction basin of hidden attractors does not intersect with small neighborhoods of any equilibrium point. To the best of our knowledge this property has not been explored using realtime interactive three-dimensions graphics. Aided by advanced computer graphic analysis, in this paper, we explore this characteristic of a particular nonlinear system with very rich and unusual dynamics, the Rabinovich–Fabrikant system. It is shown that there exists a neighborhood of one of the unstable equilibria within which the initial conditions do not lead to the considered hidden chaotic attractor, but to one of the stable equilibria or are divergent. The trajectories starting from any neighborhood o…

Dual Capability EAM for Agility in Business Capability Building : A Systems Theoretical View

2021

Through two cases of IT-enabled business capability building in large enterprises, this paper elucidates how the systems theory approach can explain the enterprise architecture management (EAM) challenge to support business agility. The observation in both of these cases is that a legacy EAM approach does not adapt to a business development scenario involving agility. This leads to a study of the nature of the challenges in EAM when enabling strategic business moves involving new technologies, at the business unit level. For the type of projects as in these cases, we do not find a fitting paradigm in the EAM literature. Suggested solutions are IT bimodality, or Two Speed IT. However, its co…

Measuring the weather’s impact on MAC layer over 2.4GHz outdoor radio links

2015

The weather s impact on the performance of a radio link at the 2.4 GHz ISM (Industry, Scientific and Medical) band had not been yet studied in great detail up to now as it is generally believed that the ultra-high frequency band is not significantly affected by weather conditions. However, our study shows significant correlations between meteorological variables and control frame errors at MAC (Medium Access Control) layer of the IEEE 802.11b/g standard. This study is performed over an outdoor radio link setting which has been monitored for several months. Moreover, we check if link distance and so modulation scheme and data rate are also decisive features of such impact. Our real scenario …

Error mitigation using RaptorQ codes in an experimental indoor free space optical link under the influence of turbulence

2015

In free space optical (FSO) communications, several factors can strongly affect the link quality. Among them, one of the most important impairments that can degrade the FSO link quality and its reliability even under the clear sky conditions consists of optical turbulence. In this work, the authors investigate the generation of both weak and moderate turbulence regimes in an indoor environment to assess the FSO link quality. In particular, they show that, due to the presence of the turbulence, the link experiences both erasure errors and packet losses during transmission, and also compare the experimental statistical distribution of samples with the predicted Gamma Gamma model. Furthermore,…
