The Gypsy Database (GyDB) of mobile genetic elements.

2007

In this article, we introduce the Gypsy Database (GyDB) of mobile genetic elements, an in-progress database devoted to the non-redundant analysis and evolutionary-based classification of mobile genetic elements. In this first version, we contemplate eukaryotic Ty3/Gypsy and Retroviridae long terminal repeats (LTR) retroelements. Phylogenetic analyses based on the gag-pro-pol internal region commonly presented by these two groups strongly support a certain number of previously described Ty3/Gypsy lineages originally reported from reverse-transcriptase (RT) analyses. Vertebrate retroviruses (Retroviridae) are also constituted in several monophyletic groups consistent with genera proposed by t…

Organization of Zinc-Containing Terminal Fields in the Brain of the LizardPodarcis hispanica: A Histochemical Study

1988

The Timm method for the histochemical detection of metals defines accurately many terminal fields in the brain of mammals. This pattern is based on the presence of zinc within the synaptic vesicles of some boutons. The aim of this study was to use the Timm method for the anatomical description of the brain in a reptile. In the telencephalon, zinc staining was observed in the inner layer of the medial cortex, the inner and outer layers of both dorsomedial and dorsal cortices, the inner layer of the lateral cortex pars anterior ventralis, the lateral cortex pars profunda, the intermediate and caudal aspects of the anterior dorsal ventricular ridge, the marginal layer and hilus of the nucleus …

Proteomic Analyses Reveal an Acidic Prime Side Specificity for the Astacin Metalloprotease Family Reflected by Physiological Substrates

2011

Astacins are secreted and membrane-bound metalloproteases with clear associations to many important pathological and physiological processes. Yet with only a few substrates described their biological roles are enigmatic. Moreover, the lack of knowledge of astacin cleavage site specificities hampers assay and drug development. Using PICS (proteomic identification of protease cleavage site specificity) and TAILS (terminal amine isotopic labeling of substrates) degradomics approaches >3000 cleavage sites were proteomically identified for five different astacins. Such broad coverage enables family-wide determination of specificities N- and C-terminal to the scissile peptide bond. Remarkably, me…

NT pro BNP plasma level and atrial volume are linked to the severity of liver cirrhosis.

2013

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Plasma levels of NT-pro-BNP, a natriuretic peptide precursor, are raised in the presence of fluid retention of cardiac origin and can be used as markers of cardiac dysfunction. Recent studies showed high levels of NT pro BNP in patients with cirrhosis. We assessed NT pro-BNP and other parameters of cardiac dysfunction in patients with cirrhosis, with or without ascites, in order to determine whether the behaviour of NT pro BNP is linked to the stage of liver disease or to secondary cardiac dysfunction. METHODS: Fifty eight consecutive hospitalized patients mostly with viral or NAFLD-related cirrhosis were studied. All underwent abdominal ultrasound and upper GI endoscop…

Stationary and Initial-Terminal Value Problem for Collective Decision Making via Mean-Field Games

2017

Given a large number of homogeneous players that are distributed across three possible states, we consider the problem in which these players have to control their transition rates, following some optimality criteria. The optimal transition rates are based on the players' knowledge of their current state and of the distribution of all the other players, thus introducing mean-field terms in the running and the terminal cost. The first contribution is a mean-field model that takes into account the macroscopic and the microscopic dynamics. The second contribution is the study of the mean-field equilibrium resulting from solving the initial-terminal value problem, involving the Kolmogorov equat…

Segmental resection of distal ureter with termino-terminal ureteric anastomosis vs bladder cuff removal and ureteric re-implantation for upper tract …

2019

OBJECTIVES: To compare overall (OS), cancer-specific (CSS), recurrence free survival (RFS) and post-operative renal function among patients affected by upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) of the distal (lower lumbar and pelvic) ureter, electively treated with segmental resection and termino-terminal anastomosis (TT) vs bladder cuff removal and ureteral re-implantation (RR). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A multicentre retrospective study, including 84 patients diagnosed with UTUC of the distal ureter and treated with TT or RR, is presented. The primary endpoint was to compare TT and RR in terms of OS, CSS and RFS. As a secondary outcome we compared the post-operative creatinine values as an inde…

Patients with limited communication in end-of-life situations: Initial psychometric properties of a discomfort observation scale

2017

This work presents an observational scale which takes into account different observable indicators of discomfort of patients in end-of-life situations with difficulties in communicating due to cognitive impairment, fatigue or sedation and provides details of its validation. In all, 71 adults participated. Model fit was adequate ( χ2(27) = 43.28, p = .024, comparative fit index = .975, root mean square error of approximation = .092 and confidence interval 90% (.033–.140)). Alpha coefficient was .70 and composite reliability index was .90. Our study provides data regarding the properties of a discomfort assessment scale. Such a scale is needed and could be very useful for the evaluation of su…

Age-dependent alterations of DNA synthesis. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase and DNA polymerase activities in bone marrow subpopulations from mi…

1980

Abstract The decrease of functional capacity of cellular immunity during ageing seems to be due to cellular changes of stem cells, particularly in the growth properties and the cell density in T-cell subsets. We approached this problem at the molecular biological level by quantifying the key enzymes necessary for DNA synthesis in bone marrow cells from mice: deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) and DNA polymerase α. The bone marrow cells were fractionated on a discontinuous bovine serum albumin density gradient and the extractable enzyme activities (expressed per 10 8 nucleated cells in the respective fraction) were determined. TdT activity was found to decrease markedly during ageing. Mature…

Frail elderly with and without cognitive impairment at the end of life: Their emotional state and the wellbeing of their family caregivers.

2017

Abstract Purpose of the study (1) To identify the main predictors of the emotional state of the frail elderly at the end-of-life and that of their primary family caregivers, taking into consideration the presence/absence of significant cognitive impairment in the patient and (2) to analyse the relationship between the emotional state of the patient and that of their primary family caregiver. Methods Our study is cross-sectional. 85 frail elderly patients at the end-of-life and their primary family caregivers participated. Information on the following aspects was collected: (1) From the patients: Socio-demographics, Functional independence, and Cognitive and Emotional state; (2) From the car…
