Transaction management for m-commerce at a mobile terminal

2006

Although there has been a lot of discussion of "transactions" in mobile e-commerce (m-commerce), very little attention has been paid for distributed transactional properties of the computations facilitating m-commerce. In this paper, we first present a requirement analysis and then present a wireless terminal-based transaction manager (TM) architecture. This architecture is based on the assumption that there is an application that supports certain business transaction(s) and that it uses the TM to store transactional state information and retrieve it after a communication link, application, or terminal crash. We present the design of such a TM, including the application interface, modules a…

A Comprehensive Observational Study of Graupel and Hail Terminal Velocity, Mass Flux, and Kinetic Energy

2018

Abstract This study uses novel approaches to estimate the fall characteristics of hail, covering a size range from about 0.5 to 7 cm, and the drag coefficients of lump and conical graupel. Three-dimensional (3D) volume scans of 60 hailstones of sizes from 2.5 to 6.7 cm were printed in three dimensions using acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic, and their terminal velocities were measured in the Mainz, Germany, vertical wind tunnel. To simulate lump graupel, 40 of the hailstones were printed with maximum dimensions of about 0.2, 0.3, and 0.5 cm, and their terminal velocities were measured. Conical graupel, whose three dimensions (maximum dimension 0.1–1 cm) were estimated from an an…

Two-terminal nanoelectromechanical bistable switches based on molybdenum–sulfur–iodine molecular wire bundles

2010

We demonstrate the application of Mo(6)S(3)I(6) molecular wire bundles for electrically controllable two-terminal on-off switches. We investigate how changes in the contact electrode material and geometry influence the device characteristics, hysteretic switching behavior and device stability. We also determine the device operating parameters, particularly the Young's moduli (40-270 GPa), operating current densities (3.2 x 10(5)-7 x 10(6) A m(-2)) and force constants. Although qualitatively, the properties of Mo(6)S(3)I(6) nanowires in nanoelectromechanical (NEM) switches are similar to those of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), their lower friction coefficient, higher mechanical stability and highe…

A new gas sensor electronic interface with generalized impedance converter

2008

A new gas sensor conditioning circuit that allows a direct resistance-to-frequency conversion, as well as the procedure for the design, is presented. The generalized impedance converter (GIC) proposed is configured as a variable capacitor connected with the capacitor timing terminal of an astable multivibrator implemented by a PSoC (programmable system on chip) microcontroller device. The GIC effective input impedance, which is controlled by the gas sensor resistance, controls the astable output frequency. Good correlation of the experimental output frequency, which depends on the gas concentration, is achieved. The circuit is a simple gas sensor digital interface with frequency output.

Functional Data Analysis for Optimizing Strategies of Cash-Flow Management

2017

The cash management deals with problem of automating and managing cash-flow processes. Optimization of the management processes greatly reduces overall cash handling costs. The present analysis is an empirical study of cash flows, from and to bank branches, deriving an underlying theoretical framework, which can in a reasonable way be connected with the optimal strategy. Functional data analysis is considered an appropriate framework to analyze the dynamics of the time series behavior of cash flows: since the observations are not equally spaced in time and their number is different for each series, they are converted into a collection of random curves in a space spanned by finite dimensiona…

Development of microbial populations in the anaerobic hydrolysis of grass silage for methane production

2010

Six batch leach bed (LB) reactors, installed in parallel and connected to a common upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor, were fed with grass silage and operated at 35 (+/-1) degrees C. The development and distribution of microorganisms, which firmly and loosely attached to solid materials, and presented in the leachate in the LB reactors, were investigated by 16S rRNA gene-based terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism and clone library analyses. The phylotypes and their relative abundance changed in the respective bacterial community throughout the 49-day run and showed differences between the communities. Large numbers of phylotypes were detected from day 10 onwards. On day 17…

Aseptic Production vs. Terminal Sterilization

2000

The safety of substance use in intraocular surgery ideally requires the absence of all biologically-active components capable of causing an inflammatory reaction. Substance purity is achieved with isolation and cleansing methods (e.g., of the polysaccharide), which remove any biological component with infective potential. The methods of production for polysaccharide isolation should remove biological agents, regardless of its origin. Hyaluronic acid is isolated either from rooster combs or biological fermentation. Use of this substance showed the development of postoperative intraocular inflammatory reactions resulting from contaminations from both sources. OVD should have low endotoxin val…

Streaming for vehicular users via elastic proxy buffer management

2004

In this article we refer to the market of vehicular networks, where groups of customers located in the same public vehicle (e.g., a train or bus) connect to a terrestrial network through a wireless/satellite backbone link. Elastic buffering is a proxy management technique devised to decouple the multimedia information retrieval rate on the network backbone from the playout streaming rate at the user terminal. It has been shown in the past that the application of elastic buffering mechanisms in terrestrial networks brings significant advantages in terms of network effectiveness. We show that elastic buffering is an extremely effective means to reduce, or even eliminate, streaming service out…

Conformational control of Bax localization and apoptotic activity by Pro168.

2004

In healthy cells, Bax resides inactive in the cytosol because its COOH-terminal transmembrane region (TMB) is tucked into a hydrophobic pocket. During apoptosis, Bax undergoes a conformational change involving NH2-terminal exposure and translocates to mitochondria to release apoptogenic factors. How this process is regulated remains unknown. We show that the TMB of Bax is both necessary and sufficient for mitochondrial targeting. However, its availability for targeting depends on Pro168 located within the preceding loop region. Pro168 mutants of Bax lack apoptotic activity, cannot rescue the apoptosis-resistant phenotype of Bax/Bak double knockout cells, and are retained in the cytosol even…
