Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) events are involved in the pathophysiology of numerous ocular diseases. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that betulinic acid protects from I/R injury in the mouse retina. Ocular ischemia was induced in mice by increasing intraocular pressure (IOP) to 110 mm Hg for 45 min, while the fellow eye served as a control. One group of mice received betulinic acid (50 mg/kg/day p.o. once daily) and the other group received the vehicle solution only. The lupane type pentacyclic triterpenes: lupeol, betulin, and betulinic acid are widely distributed natural compounds. Recently, pharmaceutical compositions from plant extracts (family Marcgraviaceae) containing betulinic acid, have been patented as anxiolytic remedies. This paper reports on synthesis, acid–base properties and pH-dependent structuring in water of d-, l- and d,l-ARGO7, bioinspired polymers obtained by polyaddition of the corresponding arginine stereoisomers with N,N′-methylenebis(acrylamide). The circular dichroism spectra of d- and l-ARGO7 showed a peak at 228 nm and quickly and reversibly responded to pH changes, but were nearly unaffected by temperature, ionic strength, and denaturating agents. Theoretical modeling studies of L-ARGO7 showed that it assumed a folded structure. Intramolecular interactions led to transoid arrangements of the main chain reminiscent of the protein hairpin motif. Carvacrol affects interfacial, structural and transfer properties of chitosan coatings applied onto polyethylene

Different chitosan coating solutions were tested with the aim of investigating their adhesion and wettability onto polyethylene film to improve packaging performance and provide antimicrobial properties. Surface wetting kinetics was monitored by contact angle measurements. Addition of ethanol and carvacrol improved wettability and adhesion of the thin chitosan layer. Structure, water vapour, O2, CO2 and air permeabilities of self supported chitosan films and coated polyethylene were determined. Effect of relative humidity on carvacrol release and permeation properties of chitosan based films and coating

International audience; The influence of water vapour conditions on mass transport and barrier properties of chitosan based films and coatings were studied in relation to surface and structural properties. Water contact angles, material swelling, polymer degradation temperature, barrier properties (PO2, PCO2, WVP) and aroma diffusion coefficients were determined. The solvent nature and the presence of carvacrol influenced the surface and structural properties and then the barrier performance of activated chitosan films.
