Surface Soil Moisture Retrieval Using the L-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar Onboard the Soil Moisture Active–Passive Satellite and Evaluation at Core V…
2017
This paper evaluates the retrieval of soil moisture in the top 5-cm layer at 3-km spatial resolution using L-band dual-copolarized Soil Moisture Active–Passive (SMAP) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data that mapped the globe every three days from mid-April to early July, 2015. Surface soil moisture retrievals using radar observations have been challenging in the past due to complicating factors of surface roughness and vegetation scattering. Here, physically based forward models of radar scattering for individual vegetation types are inverted using a time-series approach to retrieve soil moisture while correcting for the effects of static roughness and dynamic vegetation. Compared with the …

Fabric Development in Gneiss Terrains
1990
This chapter describes some aspects of the development of fabrics in gneiss terrains. It provides essential background information that should be read before attempting to map a gneiss terrain. Inevitably, the interpretations are ‘state of the art’ and not necessarily the absolute answer. Additional information can be found in the cited literature and various specialised journals such as the Journal of Structural Geology, the Journal of Metamorphic Geology, Tectonophysics, Tectonics and Precambrian Research.

Connectivity assessment in Mediterranean vineyards using improved stock unearthing method, LiDAR and soil erosion field surveys
2018
The interaction between processes and landforms is accelerated in vineyards due to bare tilled soils that enhance splash, runoff, and erosion. Traditionally, in order to assess these processes, the stock unearthing method (SUM) is considered a useful methodology that uses the graft union of the vine plant as passive bio-indicator of the topsoil level changes. However, SUM assumes that the topography between the rows is planar when development of a model of the current micro-topography is performed. Thus, we consider that there is a need to develop a new methodology (ISUM: improved SUM) that, by adding new measurements in the inter-row areas (at least 3), allows inclusion of the absent micro…
Visualization of Large Terrain Using Non-restricted Quadtree Triangulations
2004
This paper presents a set of new techniques oriented towards the real-time visualization of large terrains. These techniques are mainly focused on semi-regular triangulations of non-restricted quadtree terrain representations. Despite the fact that the paper shows that triangulations based on non-restricted quadtrees are as simple and efficient as those based on restricted quadtrees, the new triangulations avoid discontinuity problems among the boundaries of different patches without the need for tree balancing and extra triangles addition. Another important feature of the proposed triangulation is that it incorporates an efficient method for building triangle strips and triangle fans for t…
A ride comfort tyre model for off-highway vehicles
2014
Tyre modelling is a major challenge when using time domain multibody simulation models to evaluate ride comfort on off-highway commercial vehicles. Further, parameters for these big tyres are difficult to obtain and thus, commercial car tyre models are difficult to apply. In this research work, a simple vertical tyre model for off-highway ride comfort evaluation is suggested. A displaced volume approach has been developed and combined with the slip theory to yield a tyre model that can be characterised by only three parameters. Full scale measurements on a dump truck have been carried out. Force responses from measurements are compared to the simulation results. Acceleration responses and t…
Socio-spatial dynamics and ways of living of urban spaces : comparison of Besançon, Mulhouse and Strasbourg
2013
The spatial distribution of urban functions and populations is not random, this distribution canhighlight inequalities which call into question our democratic societies based on the principle ofequality. This principle is based on the relationship between the “social” and the “spatial” whichmainly consist in investigating social disparities in urban areas and what is perceived as an injustice byindividuals. To understand these socio-spatial dynamics, we focus our research on the urban history ofBesançon, Mulhouse and Strasbourg as well as the relations between the inhabitants and theirresidential environment. Using large geo-localized databases from INSEE, we study the spatialdistribution o…
Landscape Urbanism and Architecture of the Voids
2017
This paper is focused on the relevance of the idea of “void” for the development of landscape urbanism. The theories of Secchi and Koolhaas are considered as far as a new acceptance of void is concerned. Furthermore the highly influential Chassé Terrain intervention in Breda b…
