«Between Piante and Libri primi». Territory, writing and rights of an ecclesiastic institution. Monreale, XV-XVIIth centuries

2018

The article focuses on the genesis, organization and representation of the territory of an important ecclesiastical institution of Early Modern Sicily, the Archbishopric of Monreale, in a microanalytic perspective. Such an historical space has its very own peculiar economic, juridical, political and institutional features, as it includes and is part of dense, stratified and at the same time heterogeneous and changing realities. This research aims to shed some light on the close relationship between the Archbishopric as a holder of feudal rights on land and on men, and the production of written and drawn documents. Cross-referencing a variety of sources, such as maps and fiscal, judicial and…

Una visione ecologica del territorio

2014

This study stems from the theoretical principle that environment protection and conservation have evolved from a constraint-based approach aimed at designating protected areas, to an ecosystem-based approach intended to protect and preserve biodiversity. The said approach identifies the ecological networks as a possible solution to the need for an ecological-functional connection between natural and semi-natural areas and areas of cultural interest, with the ultimate aim of implementing widespread environment protection “covering” the whole territory. An ecological network can be understood either as a set of natural (or semi-natural) areas interconnected through linear infrastructure or, i…

Role of alternative food networks in Sicilian farms

2014

Today the short supply chain can be carried out through several typologies which are called as alternative food networks (AFNs). In fact, according to some studies, it is an 'alternative' response to the dominant agro-food system, which offers the possibility to produce food products through supply chains that are opposed to long, complex and rationally organised industrial chains. In the last years many European farmers adopted short supply chain to commercialise their agro-food products and Italy is one of the EU members in which AFNs are developed, thanks to its numerous typical an local products. The aim of this paper has been to analyse the role that AFNs play in Sicilian farms and how…

Towards the observation of Territorial Energy Systems : a geographical design approach for energy territorialisation

2014

Having an effect on a system calls for a thorough knowledge of it. The main goal of this research is toprovide a general framework for the interpretation of geographic information, as well as a methodologicalframework to understand the interrelations between territory and energy in the context of a territorialobservatory. A literature review of energy planning on the one hand and spatial planning on the other revealssimilar developments in the two fields, in particular in terms of decentralisation and environmental concerns. The change of geographical scale chosen for the analysis brings new possibilities for public intervention. Inthis context, therefore, local authorities have a key role t…

A theoretical and methodological framework for the analysis and measurement of environmental heritage at local level

2017

Abstract The study aims to assess the lived experience and the environmental heritage perceived level by residents of an high complexity rural area, and which is, in this context, the role played by production of renewable energies. The paper introduces the concept of rural capital as an effective tool for environmental heritage analysis and measurement. The proposed theoretical and methodological approach allows, in fact, its analysis in order to understand what dimensions related to territoriality are connected to the perceived level of environmental heritage at local level. Translated into operational terms, the methodology has resulted in an empirical analysis of a rural and inner area …

A revision of Australian species of the genus Macroscytus Fieber (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Cydnidae)

1998

AbstractA revision of Australian species of the genus Macroscytus Fieber is presented, including descriptions of eight new species: M. annulipoides (Queensland), M. arnhemicus (Queensland, Northern Territory), M. australoides (South Australia), M. bisetosus (Queensland), M. glaberrimus (Queensland), M. minimus (Queensland), M. monteithi (Queensland), and M. pseudaustralis (Western Australia). M. dilatatus (Signoret, 1881) is synonymized with M. piceus (West-wood, 1837). A key for the determination of all Australian species of the genus is provided.

Environmental and digital innovation in food: The role of digital food hubs in the creation of sustainable local agri-food systems.

2022

This document is based on the study of what a local digital food hub is. Topics such as the sustainability of agri-food systems, de-agrarianization and the causes related to them are covered, but also such principles as “shared value”, useful for improving the competitiveness of a company as well as the economical and social conditions within the communities in which it operates. In addition to these discussions, an excursus is created on the actual developments of the models ranging from “field to table”, with the new possibilities obtained from modern types of distribution networks, particularly focusing on Food Hubs and the first reasons for the validity of the system. Having explained t…

2019

In recent years, Google has devoted resources to build a complete map of the world. They constantly scan the territory, collecting a large amount of data that provides updated and complete geographic information. This allows us to have an interoperable map that provides the end user with a search tool, not only of routes but also of shops, equipment and any type of geo-referenced information. In addition, Google Maps provides a series of Application Programming Interface (API), which provides a library of set of subroutines, functions and procedures (in object-oriented programming) that can be used by other software to automate the extraction of information of the Google platform. Territories, observation and governance. Tools, methods and realities

2011

The thesis is presented in three parts which include the three key words of the title and put intoperspective the function of territorial observation, with an approach to complexity mostly empiricaland constantly referring to systemics. The first part focuses on the polysemic notion of territory. Modeling the process of territorializationallows us to bypass the semantic difficulty that arises from multiple uses of the term in the literatureand in interviews conducted with experts. The territory is then revealed in different forms ofcombinations of tangible and intangible dimensions, and individual or collective representations. The second part is based on concrete achievements of observatorie…
