Design of a Close Power Loop Test Bench for Contra-Rotating Propellers

2020

The aim of the research is to develop an azimuthing contra-rotating propeller for commercial applications with a power of 2000 kW. The thruster system is designed especially to be installed on high speed crafts (HSCs) for passenger transport with a cruising speed of about 35–40 knots. The topic is very useful because the azimuth thruster solutions currently do not find commercial applications in naval units for passenger transport. The latter are heavy, not very efficient from a hydrodynamic point of view and suitable for maximum cruising speed of about 18–20 knots. The study is interesting because among the advantages that these solutions provide are the possibility of transmitting very hi…

Grid-based Methods in Relativistic Hydrodynamics and Magnetohydrodynamics

2015

An overview of grid-based numerical methods used in relativistic hydrodynamics (RHD) and magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD) is presented. Special emphasis is put on a comprehensive review of the application of high-resolution shock-capturing methods. Results of a set of demanding test bench simulations obtained with different numerical methods are compared in an attempt to assess the present capabilities and limits of the various numerical strategies. Applications to three astrophysical phenomena are briefly discussed to motivate the need for and to demonstrate the success of RHD and RMHD simulations in their understanding. The review further provides FORTRAN programs to compute the exact solution…

A fully-automated procedure for measuring the electrical parameters of an induction motor drive with rotor at standstill

2003

The paper presents an automatic procedure to measure at standstill the electrical parameters of an induction motor fed by a PWM voltage source inverter. The proposed procedure executes automatically three tests using only the available PWM inverter control technique to obtain the required motor supply voltages. It allows the measurement of all the T-form circuit electrical parameters starting from the nameplate data as data-entry. It uses only a current sensor and no voltage sensor and process on line the collected data samples with a fast and easy to implement recursive least squares algorithm. Effectiveness of the automated procedure has been proved both by simulation and experimental tes…

Stability of the performance of thin film modules during one year of operation

2012

At the University of Agder in Grimstad, Southern Norway, a test bench for photovoltaic modules is in operation since December 2010. Currently, various c-Si as well as aSi, CIS and HIT modules are under investigation. This project is part of the Norwegian contribution to IEA PVPS Task13. The paper focuses on the stability of the modules' MPP-performance in the course of one year. For this purpose, data on the DC response are logged together with irradiance and module temperature at one-minute intervals. Data analysis is performed in monthly blocks. The modeling involves two steps. First, the short-circuit current is expressed as function of irradiance and module temperature. Then, the MPP po…

Electrical characterization of low power CIGSSe photovoltaic modules

2015

This paper presents the electrical characterization of low power CIGSSe photovoltaic (PV) modules. Such investigation is achieved to perform a comparison of their performances with conventional silicon PV modules. For this purpose, a test bench, suitable for the characterization of both traditional and innovative low power modules, has been set-up and experimental results are accurately described and discussed.

Comprehensive Modeling and Experimental Testing of Fault Detection and Management of a Nonredundant Fault-Tolerant VSI

2015

This paper presents an investigation and a comprehensive analysis on fault operations in a conventional three-phase voltage source inverter. After an introductory section dealing with power converter reliability and fault analysis issues in power electronics, a generalized switching function accounting for both healthy and faulty conditions and an easy and feasible method to embed fault diagnosis and reconfiguration within the control algorithm are introduced. The proposed system has simple and compact implementation. Experimental results operating both at open- and closed-loop current control, obtained using a test bench realized using a dSPACE system and the fault-tolerant inverter protot…

Speed control of double-sided linear induction motors for automated manufacturing systems

2014

The double-sided linear induction motor (DLIM) is acquiring a significant relevance in the application of automated manufacturing systems. For this purpose, the modeling, simulation and determination of the parameters of a double-sided linear induction motor is presented in this paper. Furthermore, the DLIM constant voltage/frequency speed control system for this application is here described. In order to verify the performance of the proposed system, a suitable test bench for the DLIM motor is set-up. From the good agreement shown by the comparison between measured and simulated results, it can be stated that the DLIM model and the speed control system is successfully validated. © 2014 IEE…

Effects of network pressure on water meter under-registration: an experimental analysis

2018

Abstract. In water supply systems, a considerable amount of apparent loss is caused by meter under-registration. Water meters are subject to intrinsic systemic error depending on the actual flow rates passing through them. Furthermore, the moving parts of the meter are subject to wear and tear that progressively reduce meter accuracy. The increase in systemic error is especially evident at low flow rates because of growing friction in the rotating mechanism, which requires a higher flow to start the meter (starting flow). The aim of this paper is to experimentally investigate metering error in an attempt to find a direct link between meter age, network pressure and apparent losses caused by…

Experimental model-based linearization of a S.I. engine gas injector flow chart:

2014

Experimental tests previously executed by the authors on the simultaneous combustion of gasoline and gaseous fuel in a spark ignition engine revealed the presence of strong nonlinearities in the lower part of the gas injector flow chart. These nonlinearities arise via the injector outflow area variation caused by the needle impacts and bounces during the transient phenomena that take place in the opening and closing phases of the injector and may seriously compromise the air-fuel mixture quality control for the lower injection times, thus increasing both fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. Despite the extensive literature about the operation and modelling of fuel injectors, there are …
