Gasr el-Lebia.Nuovi dati sui mosaici della basilica orientale

2013

Testosterone and male mating success on the black grouse leks

1996

On black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) leks females prefer dominant, viable males that have managed to acquire relatively central territories. The immunocompetence hypothesis predicts that, because high levels of testosterone are costly to the immune system, male sexual traits that are controlled by testosterone are likely to serve as reliable indicators of male health. Indeed, testosterone concentrations of black grouse males were highly variable, and strongly correlated with male mating success. This is related to the fact that males with high testosterone levels had most central territories. However, the association of testostestorone level with male mating success was not solely related to cen…

Constitutive and inducible expression of CYP enzymes in immortal hepatocytes derived from SV40 transgenic mice

2003

1. The expression of liver-specific transcription factors and cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes have been studied in three new hepatocyte-like cell lines derived from SV Delta 202 transgenic mice: AMH-Delta 202 (adult mouse hepatocytes), TAMH-Delta 202 (tumour-derived adult mouse hepatocytes) and NMH-Delta 202 (newborn mouse hepatocytes). 2. mRNA levels of liver-enriched transcription factors such as D-element binding protein (DBP), liver-enriched transcription activating protein (LAP) and the hepatic nuclear factors (HNF) 1, 2 and 3 in all Delta 202 transgenic hepatocyte lines were similar to those in the wild-type liver and in primary mouse hepatocytes. 3. Analysis of basal CYP activities and…

Salivary Testosterone and Cortisol as Biomarkers for the Diagnosis of Sarcopenia and Sarcopenic Obesity in Community-Dwelling Older Adults

2021

Nowadays, the appearance of sarcopenia (S) or sarcopenic obesity (SO) is related to aging. According to the criteria of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP), the feasibility of using salivary cortisol and testosterone levels was analyzed as diagnostic biomarkers of S or SO. One hundred and ninety non-institutionalized people aged &ge

Effects of high-intensity training on physiological and hormonal adaptions in well-trained cyclists

2017

Purpose: This study aimed to compare the effects of three different high-intensity training (HIT) models, balanced for total load but differing in training plan progression, on endurance adaptations. Methods: Sixty-three cyclists (peak oxygen uptake (V˙ O2peak) 61.3 T 5.8 mLIkgj1 Iminj1 ) were randomized to three training groups and instructed to follow a 12-wk training program consisting of 24 interval sessions, a high volume of low-intensity training, and laboratory testing. The increasing HIT group (n = 23) performed interval training as 4 16 min in weeks 1–4, 4 8 min in weeks 5–8, and 4 4 min in weeks 9–12. The decreasing HIT group (n = 20) performed interval sessions in the opposite me…

IOC consensus statement on relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S): 2018 update

2018

In 2014, the IOC published a consensus statement entitled ‘Beyond the Female Athlete Triad: Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S)’. The syndrome of RED-S refers to ‘impaired physiological functioning caused by relative energy deficiency and includes, but is not limited to, impairments of metabolic rate, menstrual function, bone health, immunity, protein synthesis and cardiovascular health’. The aetiological factor of this syndrome is low energy availability (LEA).1 The publication of the RED-S consensus statement stimulated activity in the field of Female Athlete Triad science, including some initial controversy2 3 followed by numerous scientific publications addressing: 1. The health…

New Molecular Targets and Lifestyle Interventions to Delay Aging Sarcopenia

2014

The term sarcopenia was originally created to refer age-related loss of muscle mass with consequent loss of strength (Morley et al., 2001). There are now four international definitions of sarcopenia (Cruz-Jentoft et al., 2010; Muscaritoli et al., 2010; Morley et al., 2011). In essence they all agree, requiring a measure of walking capability [either low gait speed or a limited endurance (distance) in a 6-min walk], together with an appendicular lean mass of <2 SDs of a sex and ethnically corrected normal level for individuals 20–30 years old. Sarcopenia is a prevalent health problem among the elderly. On average, 5–13 and 11–50% of people aged 60−70 years and ≥80 years, respectively suffer …

Gender- and season-dependent relationships between testosterone, oestradiol and immune functions in wild roach

2004

Plasma testosterone and 17β-oestradiol concentrations, differential leukocyte counts and proportion of dead Rhipidocotyle campanula gill parasites (parasite resistance) were determined five times during a year in two populations of roach Rutilus rutilus and analysed for seasonal and gender differences. In addition to the above immune variables, plasma Immunoglobulin M (IgM) concentration, chemiluminescence and migration differential of head kidney phagocytes, size of the spleen, haematocrit and total leukocyte count were correlated with sex hormones for each population, sampling time and sex separately, using condition factor as a partial correlate. There were no clear gender differences in…

La struttura dialettica

2017
