Preferential solvation of a dicyanate ester monomer and poly(sulfone) in different organic solvents by size-exclusion chromatography.
2002
Preferential solvation parameters A in the ternary systems solvent (1) -monomer (2) -polymer (3) were determined as a tool to measure the compatibility between the cyanate ester monomer Arocy B10 and poly(sulfone), PSF, in the presence of three organic solvents: tetrahydrofuran, dimethylformamide and dicloromethane. The A parameter was measured by size-exclusion chromatography at different monomer-to-polymer ratios. The quantitative evaluation was rigorously made at polymer-diluted conditions. PSF was found to be preferentially solvated by the monomer. Concerning the solvent used, systems containing tetrahydrofuran showed the strongest solvation, the lowest A values being those obtained in …
Resolution assessment and performance of several organic modifiers in hybrid micellar liquid chromatography
2001
The performance of four criteria that measure the elementary resolution (modified selectivity, modified RS, peak purity, and orthogonal valley-to-peak ratio) was critically assessed using as global resolution function, the product of elementary measurements. The peak purities and valley-to-peak criteria yielded the best description of the overall separation according to the shape of the resolution surfaces compared to the peak arrangements in the chromatograms, the capability of defining unambiguously the composition regions of complete resolution, and the resolution achieved in the predicted optimums. Peak purities were used to compare the effect of five organic modifiers (1-propanol, 1-bu…
Determination of procaine and tetracaine in plasma samples by micellar liquid chromatography and direct injection of sample
2001
A liquid chromatographic procedure is proposed for the determination of procaine and tetracaine in plasma samples with direct injection. The method uses a Spherisorb octadecylsilane ODS-2 C18 analytical column and a micellar mobile phase containing 0.15 M sodium dodecyl sulphate, 0.5% triethylamine at pH 2.5 and 10% propanol. The UV detection was carried out at 300 nm. Plasma sample preparation required only adequate dilution with the mobile phase before injection into the chromatographic system. The proposed method allows the determination of procaine and tetracaine in plasma at therapeutic levels.
Speciation of tetraalkyllead compounds by flow injection — atomic absorption spectrophotometry
1990
The on-line demetallation of alkyllead compounds, with iodine, and further emulsification, provides a fast determination of total lead content in liposoluble matrices, such as gasolines. It can be carried out in a double channel manifold, using a magnetically well stirred dilution chamber for the emulsification of the samples, previous to their analysis by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. On the other hand, the different behaviour of tetraethyllead (TEL) and tetramethyllead (TML) can be employed for speciation of both compounds in the sample. The effect of the flow injection parameters on the sensitivity and accuracy has been studied and the figures of merit of the proposed method…
IDENTIFICATION OF LECTINS IN THE KINETIDS OFTETRAHYMENA PYRIFORMIS
1997
Previously we described lectin-like molecules in the ciliate Tetrahymena pyriformis; by application of synthetic neoglycoconjugates it is now shown that T. pyriformis contains considerable amounts of both a beta-D-glucose- and a lactose-specific lectin. No evidence for the presence of alpha-D-mannose-, alpha-D-galactose- or of alpha-L-fucose-specific lectins could be obtained. The two lectins, identified in T. pyriformis, are associated with the kinetids. During cell division the lectins disappear or become masked in the fission furrow. Therefore, we assume that these lectins are involved in the organization of the distribution pattern of the kinetids during cell division perhaps due to lec…
Citizen Science: Sicilian Naturalistic News. 1. Natula averni (Orthoptera, Gryllidae) ; 2. Lindenia tetraphylla (Odonata, Gomphidae).
2019
The 2nd and the 3rd record in Sicily for Natula averni; the 1st was at Belice mouth (ODÉ et al., 2011). The 2nd site record in Sicily for Lindenia tetraphylla; the 1st was at lake “Lago della Trinità” (Castelvetrano,Trapani) (SURDO, 2017).
The Correlation Between Abnormal Uterine Artery Flow in the First Trimester and Genetic Thrombophilic Alteration: A Prospective Case-Controlled Pilot…
2020
Introduction. Evaluation of the first trimester uterine artery flow can predict the development of obstetrical complications. A genotype, making women prone to microthrombi. constitutes the main known susceptibility factor for anomalous development of placenta. Our aim was to study whether polymorphisms of 10 genes leading to blood clotting abnormalities are related to abnormal uterine artery blood flow in the first trimester, and may predict placenta-related diseases. Material and methods. In primary analyses we included 19 singleton pregnancies with abnormal blood flow in the uterine arteries during the first trimester of gestation, and 24 matched control with normal flow patterns. All pa…
Phase diagrams of the system tetrahydrofuran/γ-butyrolactone/poly(ether imide) and determination of interaction parameters
1998
Abstract The thermodynamic interactions in the ternary mixture tetrahydrofuran/γ-butyrolactone/poly(ether imide) (THF/γ-BL/PEI) are investigated from 30 to 50°C. This is a membrane-forming system with a high He-selectivity. Cloud point measurements show that the two binary polymer solutions THF/PEI and γ-BL/PEI exhibit miscibility gaps which close towards the centre of the ternary phase diagram where the mixtures become homogeneous (cosolvency). Vapour pressures were determined for the subsystem THF/γ-BL. For the theoretical calculations the Gibbs energy of mixing is formulated according to the Flory-Huggins theory and the interaction parameter χ THF γ-BL calculated from the vapour pressure…
American cockroach control assays in the municipal sewerage system of Valencia (Spain)
2013
ABSTRACT Several insecticides (including different active substances and formulations) were applied to sewer shafts to control Periplaneta americana (LINNAEUS, 1758) populations in Valencia (eastern Spain). Results show that the best products for cockroach control were the paints (with and without insecticide), which provided an optimal reduction of P. americana populations for up to three months (P < 0.001). Therefore, it is important to note that the reduction of cockroach populations as well as the persistence of the insecticide effect in sewers was similar in both types of paints. A product combining two pyrethroids (Tetramethrin and Alfacipermetrin) and piperonyl butoxide also gave …
Survival Strategy of Erwinia amylovora against Copper: Induction of the Viable-but-Nonculturable State
2006
Copper compounds, widely used to control plant-pathogenic bacteria, have traditionally been employed against fire blight, caused by Erwinia amylovora. However, recent studies have shown that some phytopathogenic bacteria enter into the viable-but-nonculturable (VBNC) state in the presence of copper. To determine whether copper kills E. amylovora or induces the VBNC state, a mineral medium without copper or supplemented with 0.005, 0.01, or 0.05 mM Cu2+ was inoculated with 107 CFU/ml of this bacterium and monitored over 9 months. Total and viable cell counts were determined by epifluorescence microscopy using the LIVE/DEAD kit and by flow cytometry with 5-cyano-2,3-ditolyl tetrazolium chlori…
