tbg - a new file format for genomic data
2021
AbstractMotivationThe question of determining whether a Single-Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) or a variant in general leads to a change in the amino acid sequence of a protein coding gene is often a laborious and time-consuming challenge. Here, we introduce the tbg file format for storing genomic data and tbg-tools, a user-friendly toolbox for the faster analysis of SNPs. The file format stores information for each nucleotide in each gene, allowing to predict which change in the amino acid sequence will be caused by a variant in the nucleotide sequence. Our new tool therefore has the potential to make biological sense of the unprecedented amount of genome-wide genetic variation that research…
In-line Sorting of Processed Fruit Using Computer Vision
2013
Nowadays, there is a growing demand for quality fruits and vegetables that are simple to prepare and consume, like minimally processed fruits. These products have to accomplish some particular characteristics to make them more attractive to the consumers, like a similar appearance and the total absence of external defects. Although recent advances in machine vision have allowed for the automatic inspection of fresh fruit and vegetables, there are no commercially available equipments for sorting of minority processed fruits, like arils of pomegranate (Punica granatum L) or segments of Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu) ready to eat. This work describes a complete solution based on machine visi…
Read&Answer, A Tool to Capture on-Line Processing of Electronic Texts
2009
This paper is aimed at presenting Read&Answer, a tool that records reading times, one of the main on-line methods employed in text processing research. Read&Answer allows the recording, analysis and interpretation of the learner processing in order to test specific hypotheses and explain final comprehension results. First, we will describe the tool, and then we will briefly explain some research studies using the tool. We will show how Read&Answer can be used in combination with another on-line method extensively employed in text processing research, i.e., verbal protocols, and we will also compare Read&Answer with eye movement tracking, a widely accepted on-line reading times technique.
New ways of looking into handwritten miscellanies of the seventeenth century: the case of “Spes Altera”
2020
A large number of copies of Shakespeare’s Sonnet 2 circulated in handwritten miscellanies from the second quarter of the Seventeenth Century. Eleven of those copies have significant variant readings that have led critics to put forward different hypotheses regarding their nature and quality. Most critics, taking into account stylometric analyses, have regarded them as early drafts of Shakespeare’s printed version, and have agreed on their poor quality.By paying due attention to the text’s context of production and reception, we have reached a different conclusion regarding both the nature and quality of the handwritten versions of Sonnet 2. In our view, they are the product of a conscious r…
Italian Heroines: Literature, Gender, and the Construction of the Nation
2019
Scholarship on Italian nationhood has historically focused on heroes rather than on heroines, in line with the established gendered dialectical relationship between the female nation (who nurtures those who fight for her), and the male patriot, who both adores and possesses her. However, it is argued that Italian literary heroines prove at least as productive as heroes, if not more, when it comes to generating alternative views on the nation. This essay offers an introduction to a themed issue that aims to fill this scholarly gap in relation to ideas about the Italian nation and nationhood.

On-line adaptive neural network in very remote control system
2006
Remote control involves several issues that degrade seriously the performance of the plant to be controlled. This paper presents a strategy improving the characteristics of the remote control system, using an on-line adaptive neural net, in order to learn the variations of the remote system parameters to minimize the errors. This strategy is successfully applied to a client-server remote control system for a two link robot arm. Tests show that an error position in a remote control brushless motor can be highly reduced since its first "reference command" using a prevision of that error to modify the original reference. The neural net, used only by the client, is previously trained using loca…
Massive LINE-1 retrotransposon enrichment in tamarins of the Cebidae family (Platyrrhini, Primates) and its significance for genome evolution
2021
To study heterochromatin distribution differences among tamarins, we applied LINE-1 probes using fluorescence in situ hybridization onto chromosomes of Saguinus mystax, Leontocebus fuscicollis, and Leontopithecus rosalia with the aim to investigate possible evolutionary implications. LINE-1 repeats were shown to be involved in genome architecture and in the occurrence of chromosomal rearrangements in many vertebrates. We found bright LINE-1 probe signals at centromeric or pericentromeric areas, GC rich, on almost all chromosomes in three tamarin species. We also found non-centromeric signals along chromosome arms. In a phylogenetic perspective, we analyzed the pattern of LINE-1 distribution…
