Environmental impact of Recover cotton in textile industry

2017

A comparative evaluation of the life cycle assessment (LCA) of Recover cotton, obtained from recycled garments, and virgin one, cultivated from traditional and organic crops, has been made based on the quantification of environmental impact categories, such as abiotic depletion, global warming, water use, acidification and eutrophication potential. LCA data reported in the literature for the steps of cultivation, ginning/cutting, and dyeing were compared in order to clearly show the environmental advantages of moving from traditional practices, to organic cultivation and the use of Recover cotton, a novel procedure that involves the production of cotton yarns from coloured and well characte…

VALIDITY, RELIABILITY AND FEASIBILITY OF MEASURING MUSCLE ACTIVITY WITH TEXTILE ELECTRODES EMBEDDED INTO CLOTHING

2007

INTRODUCTION In out-of-laboratory settings the surface EMG measurements are complicated by the requirement of careful electrode placement and skin preparation. The development of washable textile electrodes that can be sowed into sportswear enable muscle activity recordings during normal locomotion without skin preparation and the problem of wires hanging around the body [1]. In this study we performed validity, reliability and feasibility tests of the textile electrodes embedded into shorts against the traditional bipolar surface electrodes.

Introducing Problem Based Learning (PBL) in Textile Engineering Education and Assessing its Influence on Six Sigma Project Implementation

2012

The purpose of this paper is to explore the methodology that has adopted to implement PBL in textile engineering education at “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu (LBUS) which also highlights its potential influence on Six Sigma projects that has implemented in a textile manufacturing industry. The function of both PBL and Six Sigma approaches is to solve the problems by executing projects in a systematic way. Structurally, they are quite similar in nature. Many academic institutes around the world are currently introducing PBL to enhance the quality of higher education. On the other hand manufacturing units are trying to shorten their Six Sigma project duration, but interconnection between b…

Physical Properties of Latvian Hemp Fibres

2015

Each year more and more people focus on healthy, ecological and environmental-friendly living. Environmentally friendly lifestyle doesn’t mean that we are using only natural products, but attention is pointed to the manufacturing and production process also. The rapid development of recycled and biodegradable products causes expanding usage of hemp fibers both in household and technical textiles. The analysis of hemp cultivation and usage trends in the world and Europe shows that hemp cultivation and processing in Latvia has good perspectives. Product quality is influenced by raw materials. In this case it is hemp fiber descriptive characteristics. Hemp fibers are natural fibers and their p…

SILKNOW. Designing a thesaurus about historical silk for small and medium-sized textile museums

2019

Assessment of textile craft products’ creativity in the Latvian competition for pupils

2018

The purpose of the research is to explore the results of pupils’ creative activity in a competition in textile craft in Latvia and to find trends in the creation of textile craft products. The applied method is the analysis of creative work items made by pupils from Forms 6–7 (N1 = 106) and Forms 8–9 (N2 = 132): photos, designs and textile craft products. Among the hand and foot garments, the most popular products in both age groups were fingerless gloves. The knitting technique was used most frequently, and most of the items were wearable. Creativity predominantly manifested in the combinations of colours, techniques and materials, followed by creative technology solutions and creative pro…

A New Method to Measure 3D Textile Defects by Using Dual-lens Camera

2013

International audience; Industrial textile fabric with functionalization always has a high standard requirement. Take polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) conveyor belt as an example, the base fabrics must be of first-rate quality, with no weaving faults or broken fibers on coated surface [1]. In a previous work, we have proposed an original method to measure the height of the fiber based on variable homography. This measurement is based on a single camera acquiring two successive frames. This scheme is working well, but measurement depends on conveyor speed used for scrolling fabric. In this paper, we propose an improvement by using a new acquisition device based on two mini-lenses assembled as …

Pupils Creative Activity in Textile Art at Competition

2014

The open olympiads of home economics and technologies encourage pupils of grades 5-9 to be creative in applying textile techniques. They also popularize textile art. Purpose of the study is to analyse the results of pupils’ creative work during the 10th open olympiad of home economics and technologies. Method: analysis of textile works. 376 pupils’ works from the 1st round and 85 works of the 2nd round have been analysed and assessed according to the following criteria: compliance with the task, unity of composition, composition of colours, compatibility of materials, originality, quality of the technical accomplishment, functionality. In the olympiad traditional Latvian handicraft techniqu…
