IMPACT OF TIMETABLE SYNCHRONIZATION ON HUB CONNECTIVITY OF EUROPEAN CARRIERS

2016

This paper evaluates the net impact of timetable synchronization on the connectivity of the key European carriers at their main hubs. We measure hub connectivity using a weighted connectivity score (WCS) that takes into account the number and the trip time related quality of flight connections. Based on WCS, we compare hub performance resulting from the existing schedule against a random expectati on calculated from multiple randomized schedule simulations. In each simulated schedule scenario we randomly vary the flight departure and arrival times within the operation hours at a hub and at outbound stations keeping all other flight parameters from the real schedule unchanged. We observe that…

An Efficient Multi-Show Unlinkable Attribute Based Credential Scheme for a Collaborative E-Health Environment

2017

Modern electronic healthcare (e-health) systems constitute collaborative environments in which patients' private health data are shared across multiple domains. In such environments, patients' privacy can be violated through the linkability of different user access sessions over patient health data. Therefore, enforcing anonymous as well as multi-session unlinkable access for the users in e-health systems is of paramount importance. As a way of achieving this requirement, more emphasis has been given to anonymous attribute credentials, which allows a user to anonymously prove the ownership of a set of attributes to a verifier and thereby gain access to protected resources. Among the existin…

Media and Newspaper Representations

2006

In recent years there has been a large expansion of European scholarship on the representation of men and masculinities in a wide variety of media, including film, television, video, magazines, painting, fine art, music, dance, Internet, photography and advertising (for example, Middleton, 1992; Pedersen et al., 1996; Edwards, 1997; Nixon, 1997; Sterr, 1997; Penttila, 1999; Jokinen, 2000). However, relatively little attention has been given to the mundane medium of daily newspapers. When studying men, the daily press appears to have been frequently taken-for-granted, unlike, say, Hollywood film. Newspapers are literally everyday phenomena; their very ordinariness may mean that they are not …

Student’s voice online: Experiences of PE in Finnish schools

2012

The aim of this descriptive study was to find out how people describe their experiences of physical education (PE) in Internet discussion forums. The data for this study were collected during one randomly chosen week in April 2007 via a GoogleTM search using the Finnish word ‘koululiikunta’ [school PE]. The first 200 hits lead into nine discussion forums, which were analysed by using qualitative content analysis. These nine discussion forums included all together 356 messages. For searching these discussion forums no criteria about the writers’ age, race, class, gender or other were set. The messages were coded with sequential classification and grouped into positive, negative and both posi…

Healthy lifestyles and academic success in a sample of Italian university students

2019

Scientific literature has shown that healthy lifestyles are implicated both in the risk reduction of several disorders and in the improvement of cognitive functions. The present study evaluated the association between lifestyle behaviors and academic performance in university students from twelve different degree courses at the University of Palermo, Italy. It was hypothesized that healthy lifestyles, measured as the practice of a good diet, satisfying quality of sleep, low-stress levels, perceived social support, abstention from the use of illegal drugs, non-problematic Internet use, and regular sports habits, were associated to academic success. A total of 466 students were surveyed (26.5…

School teachers bullied by their students: Teachers´ attributions and how they share their experiences

2012

Abstract Previous studies suggest that many teachers worldwide are bullied by students. However, deeper understanding of teachers' bullying experiences; of their interpretations of the causes of bullying; and of how they cope with these experiences, is lacking. Using an Internet survey we examined the attributions made by Finnish elementary and lower secondary school teachers for their victimisation; the people with whom they share their experiences; and the links between these. Three kinds of attribution were identified: student-related, institution-related, and teacher-related. Selection of the persons with whom teachers shared their experiences was determined by the nature of the attribu…

Data Analysis as a Tool for Optimizing Learning Management Systems

2009

The advent of the Internet has opened a scope for research in new methods and tools that may facilitate the teaching and learning processes. This has, in turn, led to the development of learning platforms to support teaching and learning activities. The market penetration of these has been such that nowadays most universities provide their academic community with some form of a learning management system (LMS).Although a lot of effort has been put into deploying these platforms, the usage statistics that they generally provide are not generally processed to optimize their use within a specific context or institution (or confronted with quality or innovation indexes to produce useful feedbac…

Argument graph as a tool for promoting collaborative online reading

2012

This study explored how the construction of an argument graph promotes students' collaborative online reading compared to note-taking. Upper secondary school students (n = 76) worked in pairs. The pairs were asked to search for and read source material on the Web for a joint essay and either construct an argument graph or take notes during online reading. The data consist of transcription protocols of student pairs' discussions and joint essays. The study indicated that argument graphs may be useful tools when teachers want students to pay attention to the argumentative content of online sources and to consider relations between arguments. Additionally, with argument graphs, teachers can su…

Telepsychology and Self-help: The Treatment of Fear of Public Speaking

2007

Abstract This work presents a self-help, Internet-based telepsychology program for the treatment of public speaking fears. The system is comprised of 3 parts: The assessment protocol gives the patient information about his or her problem (i.e., amount of interference it creates in his or her life, severity, degree of fear and avoidance). The system also includes a structured treatment protocol, organized into separate blocks, reflecting the patient’s progress. This ensures that the patient does not skip any steps in the treatment (something quite common in traditional self-help manuals), which provides more control over the process. The treatment protocol is a cognitive-behavioral program t…

Analysis of computer user behavior, security incidents and fraud using Self-Organizing Maps

2019

Abstract This paper addresses several topics of great interest in computer security in recent years: computer users’ behavior, security incidents and fraud exposure on the Internet, due to their high economic and social cost. Traditional research has been based mainly on gathering information about security incidents and fraud through surveys. The novelty of the present study is given by the use of Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs), a visual data mining technique. SOMs are applied to two data sets acquired using two different methodologies for collecting data about computer security. First, a traditional online survey about fraud exposure, security and user behavior was used. Second, in addition …
