Privacy and temporal aware allocation of data in decentralized online social networks

2017

Distributed Online Social Networks (DOSNs) have recently been proposed to grant users more control over the data they share with the other users. Indeed, in contrast to centralized Online Social Networks (such as Facebook), DOSNs are not based on centralized storage services, because the contents shared by the users are stored on the devices of the users themselves. One of the main challenges in a DOSN comes from guaranteeing availability of the users' contents when the data owner disconnects from the network. In this paper, we focus our attention on data availability by proposing a distributed allocation strategy which takes into account both the privacy policies defined on the contents an…

A Survey on Privacy in Decentralized Online Social Networks

2018

Decentralized Online Social Networks (DOSNs) have recently captured the interest of users because of the more control given to them over their shared contents. Indeed, most of the user privacy issues related to the centralized Online Social Network (OSN) services (such as Facebook or Google+) do not apply in the case of DOSNs because of the absence of the centralized service provider. However, these new architectures have motivated researchers to investigate new privacy solutions that allow DOSN’s users to protect their contents by taking into account the decentralized nature of the DOSNs platform. In this survey, we provide a comprehensive overview of the privacy solutions adopted by…

GekkoFS — A Temporary Burst Buffer File System for HPC Applications

2020

Many scientific fields increasingly use high-performance computing (HPC) to process and analyze massive amounts of experimental data while storage systems in today’s HPC environments have to cope with new access patterns. These patterns include many metadata operations, small I/O requests, or randomized file I/O, while general-purpose parallel file systems have been optimized for sequential shared access to large files. Burst buffer file systems create a separate file system that applications can use to store temporary data. They aggregate node-local storage available within the compute nodes or use dedicated SSD clusters and offer a peak bandwidth higher than that of the backend parallel f…

Combining fuzzy C-mean and normalized convolution for cloud detection in IR images

2009

An important task for the cloud monitoring in several frameworks is providing maps of the cloud coverage. In this paper we present a method to detect cloudy pixels for images taken from ground by an infra-red camera. The method is a three-steps algorithm mainly based on a Fuzzy C-Mean clustering, that works on a feature space derived from the original image and the output of the reconstructed image obtained via normalized convolution. Experiments, run on several infra-red images acquired under different conditions, show that the cloud maps returned are satisfactory. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

Towards efficient inductive synthesis of expressions from input/output examples

1993

Our goal through several years has been the development of efficient search algorithm for inductive inference of expressions using only input/output examples. The idea is to avoid exhaustive search by means of taking full advantage of semantic equality of many considered expressions. This might be the way that people avoid too big search when finding proof strategies for theorems, etc. As a formal model for the development of the method we use arithmetic expressions over the domain of natural numbers. A new approach for using weights associated with the functional symbols for restricting search space is considered. This allows adding constraints like the frequency of particular symbols in t…

Community-driven computational biology with Debian Linux

2011

Background The Open Source movement and its technologies are popular in the bioinformatics community because they provide freely available tools and resources for research. In order to feed the steady demand for updates on software and associated data, a service infrastructure is required for sharing and providing these tools to heterogeneous computing environments. Results The Debian Med initiative provides ready and coherent software packages for medical informatics and bioinformatics. These packages can be used together in Taverna workflows via the UseCase plugin to manage execution on local or remote machines. If such packages are available in cloud computing environments, the underlyin…

PGAC: A Parallel Genetic Algorithm for Data Clustering

2005

Cluster analysis is a valuable tool for exploratory pattern analysis, especially when very little a priori knowledge about the data is available. Distributed systems, based on high speed intranet connections, provide new tools in order to design new and faster clustering algorithms. Here, a parallel genetic algorithm for clustering called PGAC is described. The used strategy of parallelization is the island model paradigm where different populations of chromosomes (called demes) evolve locally to each processor and from time to time some individuals are moved from one deme to another. Experiments have been performed for testing the benefits of the parallelisation paradigm in terms of comput…

Improving Karhunen-Loeve based transform coding by using square isometries

2002

We propose, for an image compression system based on the Karhunen-Loeve transform implemented by neural networks, to take into consideration the 8 square isometries of an image block. The proper isometry applied puts the 8*8 square image block in a standard position, before applying the image block as input to the neural network architecture. The standard position is defined based on the variance of its four 4*4 sub-blocks (quadro partitioned) and brings the sub-block having the greatest variance in a specific corner and in another specific adjoining corner the sub-block having the second variance (if this is not possible the third is considered). The use of this "preprocessing" phase was e…

Systematic literature review of E-learning capabilities to enhance organizational learning

2021

AbstractE-learning systems are receiving ever increasing attention in academia, business and public administration. Major crises, like the pandemic, highlight the tremendous importance of the appropriate development of e-learning systems and its adoption and processes in organizations. Managers and employees who need efficient forms of training and learning flow within organizations do not have to gather in one place at the same time or to travel far away to attend courses. Contemporary affordances of e-learning systems allow users to perform different jobs or tasks for training courses according to their own scheduling, as well as to collaborate and share knowledge and experiences that res…

Universal Design of ICT for Emergency Management from Stakeholders’ Perspective

2020

While Universal Design principles have been adopted in many areas to ensure that products and services are usable for the broadest possible diversity of users, there is still an open area when it comes to the emergency management domain. This article aims at providing a systematic overview of the current state of the emerging research field of Universal Design of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for Emergency Management, and to highlight high-impact research opportunities to ensure that the increasing introduction of ICT in Emergency Management can contribute to removing barriers instead of adding more barriers, in particular for the elderly and people with disabilities. A sys…
