The Pinch Technique and its Applications to Non-Abelian Gauge Theories

2010

Non-Abelian gauge theories, such as quantum chromodynamics (QCD) or electroweak theory, are best studied with the aid of Green's functions that are gauge-invariant off-shell, but unlike for the photon in quantum electrodynamics, conventional graphical constructions fail. The Pinch Technique provides a systematic framework for constructing such Green's functions, and has many useful applications. Beginning with elementary one-loop examples, this book goes on to extend the method to all orders, showing that the Pinch Technique is equivalent to calculations in the background field Feynman gauge. The Pinch Technique Schwinger-Dyson equations are derived, and used to show how a dynamical gluon m…

TheA 1-and the ϕ-meson in QCD

1993

Recently we used a method of stable analytic extrapolation to test whether strictly local duality between the asymptotic and the resonance region, which is believed to be valid in QCD, appears already at the present stage of QCD calculations. Probing the QCD ϱ-amplitude, we found a prominent bump structure in the resonance region, i.e. a rather direct evidence for the validity of local duality. In the present paper we confirm and extend this result by giving two further applications, theA1-meson and the ϕ-meson. While we do not meet theA1, as was to be expected since other sum rules can not separate it from the continuum, too, the extrapolation of the ϕ-amplitude leads to an enormous bump. …

Spectrum of SU(2) gauge theory with two fermions in the adjoint representation

2008

We present preliminary results of lattice simulations of SU(2) gauge theory with two Wilson fermions in the adjoint representation. This theory has recently attracted considerable attention because it might possess an infrared fixed point (or an almost-fixed-point), and hence be a candidate for a walking technicolor theory. In this work we study the particle spectrum of the theory, and compare it with more familiar spectrum of the theory with SU(2) gauge fields and two flavors of fundamental representation fermions.

Degrees of freedom and the phase transitions of two-flavor QCD

2008

We study two effective models for QCD, the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio -model and the linear sigma model extended by including a Polyakov loop potential, which is fitted to reproduce the pure gauge theory thermodynamics, and a coupling between the chiral fields and the Polyakov loop. Thus the resulting models have as relevant degrees of freedom the Polyakov loop and chiral fields. By comparing the extended models with the bare chiral models we can conclude that the addition of the Polyakov loop is necessary in order to obtain both qualitative and quantitative agreement with known results at finite temperatures. These results are extended to finite net-quark densities, several thermodynamical quantit…

The generation of the ϱ-resonance by QCD

1992

By showing that the imaginary part of a suitable QCD amplitude, after extrapolation up to the cut, exhibits indeed a prominent bump structure where the ϱ-resonance is expected to be, a rather direct indication for the generation of the ϱ-resonance by QCD is given. This is achieved by using a mathematically rigorous method of stable analytic extrapolation, based on the theory of maximally converging sequences of polynomials and the application of conformal mappings.

Method of analytic continuation by duality in QCD: Beyond QCD sum rules

1986

We present the method of analytic continuation by duality which allows the approximate continuation of QCD amplitudes to small values of the momentum variables where direct perturbative calculations are not possible. This allows a substantial extension of the domain of applications of hadronic QCD phenomenology. The method is illustrated by a simple example which shows its essential features.

$\eta$-$\eta\prime$ mixing in Large-Nc ChPT: discussion, phenomenology, and prospects

2016

A systematic study of the η-η ′ mixing in Large-Nc chiral perturbation theory is presented [1] with special emphasis on the role of the next-to-next-to-leading-order contributions in the combined momentum, quark-mass, and 1/Nc expansions. At this order, loop corrections as well as OZIrule-violating pieces need to be included. Mixing angles as well as pseudoscalar decay constants are discussed within this framework. The results are compared with recent phenomenological approaches.

The spectrum of bosonized QCD2 in the chiral limit

1991

Abstract By studying an equivalent non-abelian bosonic theory we resolve the spectrum of Quantum Chromodynamics in one space-one time dimensions for massless quarks. The emphasis is placed in the non chiral sector described by colored meson fields. Two and four point functions of these fields are explicitly calculated in the large N limit. Some of the relevant issues: chiral symmetry realization, phases, baryon spectrum, topology etc …, are revisited.

Effective Lagrangians for QCD: Deconfinement and Chiral Symmetry Restoration

2004

Effective Lagrangians for Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) especially suited for understanding deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration at nonzero temperature and matter density are reviewed. These effective theories allow one to study generic properties of phase transitions using non-order parameter fields without loosing the information encoded in the true order parameter. {}For the pure gauge theory we demonstrate that, near the deconfining phase transition, the center group symmetry is naturally linked to the conformal anomaly. Another relevant outcome is that when the theory contains also quarks we can explain the intertwining of chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement for QCD w…
