Professionalization as Status Adaptation: The Nobility, the Bureaucracy, and the Modernization of the Legal Profession in Finland

In contrast to Anglo-American lines of professional development, the central agent of professionalization in many Continental countries was the state bureaucracy. However, this article proposes that an understanding of the class structure of traditional society is also needed to explain the privileged position of lawyers. An historical study of lawyers in the 19th century, after Finland was annexed by Russia, demonstrates that the legal profession provided the nobility an important medium of adaptation to the new society. This study explores the relationship between primary school physical education and physical activity as sites for the practice of physical activity of Irish primary school children. Understanding how children make connections between physical activity sites is important in shaping physical education experiences that promote lifelong participation. Children’s (aged 8–11) awareness, knowledge, and understanding of physical activity and physical education were examined using participatory methods of ‘draw and write’ ( n = 135) and focus group interviews ( n = 34). Le temps semble a l’alliance de la litterature et des sciences sociales. Mais les modalites en sont encore incertaines. Au lieu de conside­rer l’anthropologie comme une forme de litterature, on peut envisager la litterature comme une enquete. Cette « litterature d’investigation » se donne notamment pour objectif de documenter des formes de vie et de monter des dispositifs rendant compte d’aspects inapercus de phenomenes sociaux. Elle occupe ainsi une position intermediaire : elle se menage a la fois une liberte et une creativite relatives vis-a-vis des protocoles d’enquete propres aux sciences sociales et une certaine mefiance pour un respect trop reverencieux envers la litterature.

Practices of Writing in Ethnographic Work

Although the practice of writing is key to the production of ethnographic knowledge, the topic remains understudied. Using material from our own ethnographic research in the fields of air travel and cultural heritage as data, we develop a reflexive account of ethnographic writing. We examine in detail the practices of jotting down observations, writing field notes, analytic annotating, ordering and rearranging, and drafting and revising papers. The article takes a praxeological stance, conceptualizing writing as a practice that is simultaneously cognitive, embodied, and material.
