Reprocessed polylactide: Studies of thermo-oxidative decomposition

2012

The combustion process of virgin and reprocessed polylactide (PLA) was simulated by multi-rate linear non-isothermal thermogravimetric experiments under O2. A complete methodology that accounted on the thermal stability and emission of gases was thoroughly developed. A new model, Thermal Decomposition Behavior, and novel parameters, the Zero-Decomposition Temperatures, were used to test the thermal stability of the materials under any linear heating rate. The release of gases was monitored by Evolved Gas Analysis with in-line FT-IR analysis. In addition, a kinetic analysis methodology that accounted for variable activation parameters showed that the decomposition process could be driven by …

Thermal and thermo-oxidative stability of reprocessed poly(ethylene terephthalate)

2013

An exhaustive assessment of the behaviour of virgin and mechanically reprocessed poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) facing thermal and thermo-oxidative decomposition processes is presented in this work, as an approach for the energetic valorisation of post-consumer PET goods. Multi-rate linear-non-isothermal thermogravimetric (TGA) experiments under inert (Ar) and reactive (O2) conditions were performed to virgin PET and its recyclates in order to simulate the thermal behaviour of the materials facing pyrolysis and combustion processes. The release of gases was monitored by evolved gas analysis of the fumes of the TGA experiment, by in-line Fourier-transform infrared (IR) analysis, with the…

Slow pyrolysis of an LDPE/PP mixture: Kinetics and process performance

2021

Abstract High- and low-density polyethylene (HDPE and LDPE) and polypropylene (PP) are the most common polymers among plastic waste as they have multiple commercial applications. This study focused on thermal degradation characteristics and kinetic of a plastic mixture with a composition of 92.5 wt% LDPE and 7.5% PP. Thermal decomposition characteristics of the plastic mixture was analysed through thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). The overall kinetic of the process was studied using the modified Coats−Redfern method and the Ozawa-Flynn-Wall (OFW) method. The apparent activation energy (E) and pre-exponential factor (A) obtained were 316.0 kJ/mol; 8.09E+21 min−1 and 311.5 kJ/mol; 4.35E+21 m…

Tri- and tetranuclear heteropivalate complexes with core {Fe2Ni O} (x = 1, 2): Synthesis, structure, magnetic and thermal properties

2019

Abstract The reactions of complex [Fe2Ni(O)(Piv)6(Et2O)(H2O)2] (1) with 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and 2,2′-bipyridine (bpy) gave the following new coordination compounds: the trinuclear complex [Fe2Ni(O)(Piv)6(phen)H2O]·(C2H5)2O (2), the tetranuclear ones [Fe2Ni2(OH)2(Piv)8(phen)2] (3) and [Fe2Ni2(OH)2(Piv)8(bpy)2] (4), depending on the crystallization conditions. According to single crystal X-ray diffraction data, all the compounds have molecular structures. The Mossbauer spectra of 1–3 correspond to high-spin Fe3+ ions in an octahedral environment consisting of oxygen atoms. The DC magnetic susceptibility studies and quantum-chemical analysis of intra- and intermolecular J pathways using…

Bimolecular reduction of 9-alkyl-3-nitrocarbazoles

2007

AbstractReduction of 9-alkyl-3-nitrocarbazoles (Ia–Ie) with lithium aluminium hydride gave corresponding 9,9′-dialkyl-3,3′-azocarbazoles (IIa–IIe) in moderate yield. By the action of zinc dust in alcohol and aqueous alkali on I or II, 5,13-dialkyldiindolo[3,2-a,d]phenazines (IIIa–IIId) were obtained. Parent compounds, viz. 3,3′-azocarbazole (IIf) and diindolo[3,2-a,d]phenazine (IIIf) could not be obtained in these ways. Compound IIf was obtained in Vorländer reaction and IIIf by thermal decomposition of 3-azidocarbazole. Formation of IIIa–IIId is explained as a result of ortho-benzidine rearrangement of hypothetical 9,9′-dialkyl-3,3′-hydrazocarbazoles.

Rigid biobased polycarbonates with good processability based on a spirocyclic diol derived from citric acid

2020

Introducing biobased polymers from renewable sources for use as high-performance thermoplastics with high demands on mechanical rigidity, transparency, thermal stability, as well as good processability, is a significant challenge. In the present work we have designed and prepared a rigid biobased bis-spirocylic diol by di-cycloketalization of a bicyclic diketone (cis-bicyclo[3.3.0]octane-3,7-dione, obtained from citric acid) using trimethylolpropane. This spiro-diol monomer has two reactive primary hydroxyl groups and the synthesis from inexpensive biobased starting materials is straightforward and readily upscalable, involving no chromatographic purification. In order to explore the useful…

Arynic species II

1986

Abstract o-Benzyne and its 4-methyl, 4-chloro and 4-bromo-derivatives were generated in the thermal decomposition of two new kinds of polymer-bound precursors: 1(2-carboxyaryl)triazenes and 2-carboxyaryl-sulphonates. New kinds of trapping polymers for these elusive species are also presented.

1990

New monomers are described for the synthesis of rod-like poly(1,4-phenyleneethynylene)s with long flexible aliphatic side chains. By palladium catalyzed polycondensation soluble polymers with melting points around 100°C could be obtained. The molecular weight was estimated by GPC, VPO and elemental analysis: GPC showed a multimodale distribution with Pn = 9–15. NMR spectra were found to be in agreement with the assumed polymer structure, but signals of the acetylenic carbons could not be detected. A broad, structureless absorption with a maximum at λ = 410 nm is seen in the UV-VIS-spectra. The thermal decomposition of the substituted PPE's starts at about 400°C and is comparable to that of …
