Real time polarization imaging of weld pool surface
2015
The search for an efficient on-line monitoring system focused on the real-time analysis of arc welding quality is an active area of research. The topography and the superficial temperature field of the weld pool can provide important information which can be used to regulate the welding parameters for depositing consistent welds. One difficulty relies on accessing this information despite the bright dazzling welding arc. In the present work, Stokes polarimetry and associated shape-from-polarization methods are applied for the analysis of the weld pool through its 810 nm-wavelength infrared emissions. The obtained information can provide a better understanding of the process, such as the usa…
Erosion Behavior of PS-PVD Thermal Barrier Coatings and the Effect of Composite Coating (PS-PVD + APS) Thickness
2020
In this work, feather-column 7YSZ thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) were prepared by plasma spray-physical vapor deposition (PS-PVD). The anti-particle erosion test was carried out at room temperature to study the erosion behavior and failure mechanism of PS-PVD TBCs. The results showed that the particle erosion process of the PS-PVD TBCs experienced three stages of high-rate, medium-rate and slow-rate erosion. In order to improve the particle erosion resistance of the PS-PVD TBCs, different thicknesses of dense-layered coatings were prepared on the surface of the PS-PVD TBCs by air plasma spraying (APS). The effect of dense-layered thickness on the erosion behaviour of PS-PVD TBCs was discus…
High Temperature Oxidation of TiAl and TiAl8Nb Alloys in Air
2011
Isothermal oxidation of two g-TiAl-based intermetallic alloys: Ti48Al and Ti46Al8Nb alloys was studied in synthetic air at 1073-1223 K for up to 240 hrs. Mass change per unit area for the oxidized samples followed approximately the parabolic rate law. The kp values for the studied temperature interval were in the range from 7.2×10-13 to 1.8×10-11 g2cm-4s-1. The activation energy for oxidation of Ti48Al alloy in air at 1073-1223 K was Ea = 165±12 kJ/mol. Niobium addition to Ti48Al alloy in the amount of 8% increased its oxidation resistance. Structure and chemical composition of the oxidation products, and morphology of the oxidized samples were investigated using XRD, SEM-EDS, and TEM. The …

Effects of ZrO2 precursors on the synthesis of V-ZrSiO4 solid solutions by the sol-gel method
1992
The preparation of V-ZrSiO4 solid solutions starting from different ZrO2 precursors by using sol-gel methods is reported. The starting materials were hydrolysed and the dried gels were fired at a temperature between 500 and 900 °C with soaking times of 12h. The organic character of zirconia precursors was stronger, i.e. the starting material had more carbon atoms, a higher temperature was necessary to make the first crystalline phase appear (ZrO2(tetragonal)) and the temperature range for the whole phase transformation was narrower. In all dried gel samples the presence of infrared bands which might be associated with either Si-O-Zr or Si-O-V was not observed. On the other hand, some bands …
Mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of monolayer and bilayer graded Al/SiC/rice husk ash (RHA) composite
2017
Abstract The mechanical, electrical and thermal properties as well as thermal expansion of Al/SiC/RHA (rice husk ash) monolayer and bilayer composite have been studied using the Taguchi method and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The parameter that most significantly affects the modulus of elasticity of Al/SiC/RHA bilayer composites is processing time, with contribution percentages of 68 and 27% calculated from stress-strain graphs and ultrasonic method, respectively. However, the factor which mostly affects bending strength, CTE value and electrical resistivity of composites is process temperature with contribution percentages of 32, 28, and 22%, respectively. The projected values for modulus…
Modeling of ITER TF cooling system through 2D thermal analyses and enthalpy balance
2017
Abstract The winding pack of the ITER Toroidal Field (TF) coils is composed of 134 turns of Nb3Sn Cable in Conduit Conductor (CICCs) wound in 7 double pancakes and cooled by supercritical helium (He) at cryogenic temperature. The cooling of the Stainless Steel (SS) case supporting the winding pack is guaranteed by He circulation in 74 parallel channels. A 2D approach to compute the temperature distribution in the ITER TF winding pack is here proposed. The TF is divided in 32 poloidal segments, for each segment the corresponding 2D model is built and a thermal analysis is performed applying the corresponding nuclear heating computed with MCNP code considering the latest design updates, such …
Submicrometer CaCuO2 and Ca2CuO3 particles from bimetallic formate precursors
1992
Abstract CaCuO2 and Ca2CuO3 are readily obtained by thermal decomposition of two new calcium and copper formates, CaCu(HCOO)4 and Ca2Cu(HCOO)6. These chemical-precursor based syntheses, while overcoming problems related to the stoichiometry of the final products, involve very short diffusion path lengths. This, in turn, results in soft treatments yielding pure phases constituted by submicrometer (≈0.4 μm) homogeneous particles.
Influence of the mode of introduction of a reactive element on the high temperature oxidation behavior of an alumina-forming alloy. Part I: Isotherma…
2004
Several routes of yttrium introduction were applied to test the high temperature oxidation performance of a FeCrAl alloy. Isothermal oxidation tests were described in a previous paper (Part I of this paper in this journal, 2004, 55, 352). Cyclic oxidation tests were performed in air under atmospheric pressure on blank specimens, Y 2 O 3 sol-gel coated-, Y 2 O 3 metal-organic chemical vapor deposited (MOCVD)-, yttrium ion implanted-alloys, as well as on a steel containing 0.1 wt.% of yttrium as an alloying element. For the 20 hours cycles, all the samples, except FeCrAl-0.1Y, exhibit weight losses after a few cycles, indicating drastic spallation of the oxide scales. The MOCVD coated specime…
