Modifications of optical absorption band of center in silica

Abstract We report an experimental study of the modifications induced by gamma ray irradiation and by thermal treatment of both the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and the optical absorption spectra of the E γ ′ center in silica. Our data show that the main g-values of E γ ′ EPR signal change as a function of the irradiation dose together with a red shift of the peak position of the absorption band around 5.8 eV attributed to the same center. Changes in the opposite direction are observed in both signals after thermal treatments. The peak position change of the optical absorption band is in quantitative agreement with the g-values shift. Temperature effects on the IR absorption bands of hydroxyl and deuteroxyl groups in silica glass

Abstract In this report we will show the changes of the band shape of the hydroxyl group (SiOH) infrared (IR) absorption band (∼3670 cm −1 ) in silica glass induced by lowering temperature in the range from 290 to 20 K. This band is considered as the overlap of several spectral components associated to the vibrational activity of hydroxyl groups in different bond configurations. By a suitable analysis of the experimental band profile in terms of different sub-bands, we studied the thermal evolution of each component and we reconsidered their assignations. Evaluating the Effectiveness of Modelling-Oriented Workshops for Engineering Undergraduates in the Field of Thermally Activated Phenomena

Two 20-h modelling-based workshops focused on the explanation of ther- mally activated phenomena were held at the University of Palermo, Italy, during the Academic Year 2014–2015. One of them was conducted by applying an inquiry-based approach, while the other, still based on laboratory and modelling activities, was not focused on inquiry. Seventy-two students belonging to the Undergraduate Program for Chemical Engineering attended the two workshops. QPOs expected in rotating accretion flows around a supermassive black hole

It is well known that rotating inviscid accretion flows with adequate injection parameters around black holes could form shock waves close to the black holes, after the flow passes through the outer sonic point and can be virtually stopped by the centrifugal force. We numerically examine such shock waves in 2D accretion flows with 10−5 to 106 Eddington critical accretion rates around a supermassive black hole with 106 M. As the results, the luminosities show QPO phenomena with modulations of a factor 2–3 and with quasi-periods of a few to several hours.
Broadband X-ray spectral variability of the pulsing ULX NGC 1313 X-2

[Context] It is thought that ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are mainly powered by super-Eddington accreting neutron stars or black holes as shown by the recent discovery of X-ray pulsations and relativistic winds. [Aims] This work presents a follow-up study of the spectral evolution over two decades of the pulsing ULX NGC 1313 X-2 in order to understand the structure of the accretion disc. 230Th/U-dating of a late Holocene low uranium speleothem from Cuba

We present 22 U-series ages for a stalagmite from north-western Cuba based on multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICPMS) and thermal ionisation mass spectrometry (TIMS). Our results reveal that the stalagmite continuously grew within the last ~1400a. Low uranium content of the sample and thus, extremely low 230Th concentrations limit the precision and accuracy of 230Th/U-dating by TIMS. Samples measured by MC-ICPMS show a high variability of 232Th content along the growth axis with some sections significantly affected by initial 230Th from a detrital phase. An a-priori bulk earth ratio for (238U/232Th) cannot be used to accurately account for this initial 230Th.…
Thermal stability of transition alumina nanocrystals with different microstructures

Abstract The preparation of well-crystallized boehmite nanoparticles with different morphologies, encompassing from aciculae or rods of 320, 150 and 70 nm of length to platelets of 50 nm in diameter, allowed a comparative study of their respective thermal evolutions as alumina precursors. Static thermal treatments of boehmite nanocrystals at 600, 1000 and 1200 °C and a dynamic, in situ synchrotron study between 100 and 1000 °C revealed that original boehmite microstructures, i.e. size and shape of the nanoparticles, were kept not only in γ-Al 2 O 3 but also in transitional aluminas up to 1000 °C. [EN] The soybean oil polyol (SOP) use as feedstock in the polyurethane industry has been recently emphasized due to its excellent resistance to hydrolysis, which is also applicable in coatings and thermal insulation. In this article, the SOP was obtained by a very fast microwave-assisted alcoholysis of epoxidized soybean oil (ESO). The preparation method, thermal properties, and relaxation process were evaluated. International audience; The geochemical behaviour of Rare Earth Elements, Zr and Hf was investigated in the thermal waters of Nevado del Ruiz volcano system. A wide range of pH, between 1.0 and 8.8, characterizes these fluids. The acidic waters are sulphate dominated with different Cl/SO4 ratios. The important role of the pH and the ionic complexes for the distribution of REE, Zr and Hf in the aqueous phase was evidenced. The pH rules the precipitation of authigenic Fe and Al oxyhydroxides producing changes in REE, Zr, Hf amounts and strong anomalies of Cerium.
