Thermoplastic Properties of Endodontic Gutta-percha: A Thermographic In Vitro Study
2014
Abstract Introduction Endodontic gutta-percha undergoes deformation at temperatures above 65°C. The temperature influence of heat carriers on gutta-percha cones was investigated in vitro. Methods Six single-rooted extracted teeth were embedded in resin and fixed. The root canals were prepared (ProFile; Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaiques, Switzerland) to different tapers and bisected. Thermographic images when heating the gutta-percha cones (Roeko, Langenau, Germany) with a heat carrier (ML .12; SybronEndo, Orange, CA) at 1 and 5 mm from the working length were made with an infrared thermal imaging camera (ThermaCam P640; Flir Systems, Taby, Sweden). The device temperature was preset at 200°C. T…
Thermal Analysis, Mechanical and Rheological Behaviour of Melt Manufactured Polyethylene/Liquid Crystal Polymer Blends
2011
Modification of properties of conventional thermoplastics with thermotropic liquid crystal polymers, from one hand, allows decrease their viscosities, substantially facilitating processing conditions, and, from another hand, allows increase their exploitation properties. Orientation of the labile structure of liquid crystal polymer in extrusion or injection moulding causes specific reinforcement (so-called self-reinforcement) to occur in the blends containing liquid crystal polymer. Up to now the effect of self-reinforcement is mostly investigated in the blends, containing considerable amount of liquid crystal polymer. In this research the effect of minor amounts of liquid crystalline co-po…
Effect of some injection molding processing conditions on weld lines characteristics
1988
The influence of injection and mold temperature as well as holding time on the knit-line characteristics in samples of Nylon 6 obtained by injection molding was analysed. The characteristics of the surface defect seem to be governed by the shrinkage rate and amount in the weld line zone.

4-(4-Carboxyphenyl)-3,5-dioxo-1,2,4-triazolidin-1-yl moieties resulting from 4-(3,5-dioxo-1,2,4-triazolin-4-yl)benzoic acid (U4A) randomly attached to 1,4-polybutadiene form supramolecular aggregates which act as effective junction zones in new thermoplastic elastomers. Deuteron nuclear magnetic resonance (2H NMR) spectroscopy was used to investigate the molecular dynamics of the polymer backbone and the junction zones in selectively labelled samples. The spectra show motional heterogeneity along the polymer chain as well as in the supramolecular domains. Polybutadiene segments which are adjacent to these polar clusters are restricted in their mobility, even at temperatures 100 K above the …
A review on basalt fibre and its composites
2015
Abstract In recent years, both industrial and academic world are focussing their attention toward the development of sustainable composites, reinforced with natural fibres. In particular, among the natural fibres (i.e. animal, vegetable or mineral) that can be used as reinforcement, the basalt ones represent the most interesting for their properties. The aim of this review is to illustrate the results of research on this topical subject. In the introduction, mechanical, thermal and chemical properties of basalt fibre have been reviewed. Moreover, its main manufacturing technologies have been described. Then, the effect of using this mineral fibre as reinforcement of different matrices as po…
Mechanical performance of thermoplastic matrix natural-fibre composites
2008
Publisher Summary Natural-Fibre Composites (NFCs) are being considered as high-tech materials meant to replace conventional composites in high-performance applications. There are a number of advantages that natural fibres can offer compared with synthetic materials. Thermoplastic natural-fibre composites can be classified by the polymer used as a matrix as well as by the type of the fibre reinforcing the polymer. Currently, the main areas of application of thermoplastic NFCs are packaging, transportation and building industries. The packaging industry requires materials that possess specific properties, but that can also be easily discarded after use. This chapter discusses the mechanical p…
Aroma compound transfer between a solid food matrix and packaging films: a comprehensive approach
2008
International audience; Food quality is highly dependent on mass transfers occurring in food / packaging systems during storage. Particularly, aroma compound transfers are influenced by the composition and structure of the packaging and food matrix, the physico-chemical properties of aroma compounds and the conditions of the external environment (1). The influence of the food matrix on aroma compound-packaging film interactions was little studied in the literature (2,3). The objective of this work, in the framework of the French project CANAL ARLE, is to better understand aroma compound transfer into and through cellulosic and thermoplastic packaging films by taking into account their inter…
Infrared spectroscopy on new multiphase thermoplastic elastomers based on hydrogen bond complexes - temperature dependence and orientation behaviour
1991
The structure and deformation behaviour of a new class of thermoplastic elastomers is studied by temperature dependent infrared (IR) spectroscopy and by IR - dichroism spectroscopy. The thermoplastic elastomer is based on polybutadiene with statistically distributed side groups which form an anisotropic supramolecular structure via hydrogen bonds. Changes in the IR spectra at elevated temperatures are related to the melting of the ordered structure. The uniaxial deformation behaviour is studied by linear dichroism Fourier-transform (FT)-IR spectroscopy. A deformation model is developed which accounts for the major experimental results: while the polybutadiene segments behave as flexible cha…
Transparent thermoplastic polyurethanes based on aliphatic diisocyanates and polycarbonate diol
2016
Segmented thermoplastic polyurethanes (PUs) were synthetized using polycarbonate diol as soft segment with a molar mass of 500 and as a hard segment 1,5-pentanediol with a combination of isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). Differential scanning calorimetry, differential mechanical analysis, Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflection spectroscopy, haze, transmittance, hardness, tensile properties and retention of tensile properties tests were employed to characterize the different PUs. The results of this study show that IPDI/HDI relation has a significant impact on the phase mixing, crystallinity and therefore on the PU’s properties. The variati…
Sustainable recycling technologies for thermoplastic polymers and their composites: A review of the state of the art
2022
This review article discusses the environmental and economic effects of recycling, as well as sustainable thermoplastic polymer recycling technologies. Several researchers have utilized recycled thermoplastics as matrices in the production of a variety of natural and synthetic-based composites, which is also the focus of this study. All of the industries (food and packaging, construction and building, transportation, and indoor usage) where recycled thermoplastics have a large market share (food and packaging, construction and building, transportation, and indoor usage) are covered in this review. The desirable properties of thermoplastic polymers, such as corrosion resistance, low density,…
