X-ray diffraction Warren–Averbach mullite analysis in whiteware porcelains: influence of kaolin raw material
2018
ABSTRACTCompositional and microstructural analysis of mullites in porcelain whitewares obtained by the firing of two blends of identical triaxial composition using a kaolin B consisting of ‘higher-crystallinity’ kaolinite or a finer halloysitic kaolin M of lower crystal order was performed. No significant changes in the average Al2O3 contents (near the stoichiometric composition 3:2) of the mullites were observed. Fast and slow firing at the same temperature using B or M kaolin yielded different mullite contents. The Warren–Averbach method showed increase of the D110 mullite crystallite size and crystallite size distributions with small shifts to greater values with increasing firing temper…
Untangling the hidden intrathalline microalgal diversity inParmotrema pseudotinctorum:Trebouxia crespoanasp. nov.
2018
AbstractIntrathalline phycobiont diversity was investigated in a rosette-forming lichen,Parmotrema pseudotinctorum, using a combination of Sanger sequencing, 454-pyrosequencing, conventional light and confocal microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. A total of 39 thalli sampled in five Canary Island populations were investigated. Three novel lineages of lichen phycobionts were detected, all being inferred within theTrebouxiaclade G. The most abundant phycobiont lineage, occurring in all lichen populations investigated, is described here asTrebouxia crespoanasp. nov. This species produces spherical to pyriform cells possessing a crenulate chloroplast with lobes elongated at their e…
Epiretinal Membrane Vitrectomy With and Without Intraoperative Intravitreal Dexamethasone Implant: A Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis
2021
Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of vitrectomy combined with intravitreal dexamethasone implant vs. vitrectomy without the implant in patients with epiretinal membrane (ERM) by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis.Methods: Studies that compared ERM vitrectomy with and without intraoperative dexamethasone implant with a follow-up ≥3 months were included. The primary outcome was mean best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) change between eyes undergoing ERM vitrectomy combined with dexamethasone implant (DEX group) and eyes undergoing ERM vitrectomy alone (control group) at 3 months. Secondary outcomes included mean BCVA change at 6 months and mean optical coherence tomography centra…
Evaluation of regional haemodynamics and alterations of vascular wall of the lower limbs in hypertensive subjects
1995
This study was designed to analyse the relationship between arterial hypertension and changes in arterial blood flow and vascular wall damage of the lower limbs in hypertensive patients with various degrees of hypertension. Six hundred and fifty-four hypertensive patients (421 males and 233 females) aged 35 to 70 years and 88 healthy subjects (63 males and 25 females) aged 39 to 60 years were studied. Strain-gauge plethysmography of the lower limbs was used to calculate arterial calf blood flow (RF), arterial calf blood flow after post-ischaemic hyperaemia (PF), basal and minimal vascular resistances (BVR and MVR), time to reach peak flow (tPF), time until 50% reduction of peak flow (tT1/2)…
Assessment of corneal morphological changes induced by the use of daily disposable contact lenses.
2015
To assess the effect of different disposable soft contact lenses upon corneal thickness, and upon anterior and posterior corneal curvatures using a dual-Scheimpflug imaging based device.Twenty-eight young, healthy subjects wore four different types of daily disposable soft contact lenses on four different days: Dailies Total1, Proclear 1 Day, Clariti 1-Day and 1-Day Acuvue Moist. The lenses had different material and water content. Pachymetry maps and keratometry values were obtained using the Galilei G4 twice a day: one before putting the lens on and one after an eight-hour period of contact-lens wear. Measurements were also recorded without any contact lenses being worn during a day.Clari…
Uveal effusion syndrome complicated by anterior ischemic optic neuropathy
1995
We report on a case of idiopathic uveal effusion syndrome complicated by AION. To our knowledge such an association hasn't been previously described. We suggest that scleral thickening caused obstruction of vortex veins followed by uveal effusion and compression of posterior ciliary arteries within their intrascleral tract, leading to AION. Nevertheless it can't be excluded that AION was the result of mechanical compression on ciliary vessels of optic disc by choroidal detachment. © 1996, Kluwer Academic Publishers. All rights reserved.
Consumer texture preferences: Effect of age, gender and previous experience
2000
Four different strawberry candies with varying thickening agents (pectin, gelatin, starch, and gelatin + starch) were rated by three consumer age groups: teenagers (13–14 years), young adults (19–23 years) and the middle-aged (40–63 years) (n = 60 in each group). Age, gender, use frequencies and hedonic ratings often commercial candy types were collected as background information. Four preference groups were found by using preference mapping. The most important factor predicting preference of a sample were hedonic evaluations of commercial candies whose texture was similar to that of the test sample. If the consumers gave high hedonic ratings to one sample they also tended to report liking …
Prä- und postoperative Evaluation von linksventrikulären Herzspitzenaneurysmen mittels Cine-MRT
2001
Purpose: To demonstrate the usefulness of cine-MRI for the evaluation of apical left ventricular aneurysms (ALVA) and for prediction of the surgical outcome. Materials and Methods: We investigated 28 patients with ALVA, 13 of them additionally after aneurysmectomy at 1.5 T; 15 healthy volunteers served as normal controls. For cine-MRI k-space segmented FI-2D-GE sequences were used. Analysis comprised the calculation of cardiac volume indices, cardiac function, and percentual myocardial thickening (PMT). For prediction of surgical results we divided left ventricle into an aneurysmatic and a non-aneurysmatic part. The non-aneurysmatic part was assumed as the left ventricle after surgical remo…
Impact of preclinical carotid atherosclerosis on global cardiovascular risk stratification and events in a 10-year follow-up: comparison between the …
2019
Background The aim of the study was to compare three widely used algorithms for stratification of the global cardiovascular risk (GCVR): the Framingham Heart Study (FHS) score, the European systemic coronary risk estimation (SCORE) and the Italian 'Progetto Cuore' (heart project) score. It was also investigated how preclinical carotid atherosclerosis (pre-ATS) might influence the incidence and improve the risk prediction of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular events. Methods Subjects (n = 358) without previous history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) were recruited and the GCVR was calculated for each patient. An ultrasound evaluation of the carotid arteries was also performed. Results Accord…
Radiation-induced vascular changes in the intracranial irradiation field in medulloblastoma survivors: An MRI study
2019
While survival times after treatment of medulloblastoma are increasing, little is known about radiochemotherapy (RCT)-induced cerebrovascular changes. High resolution vessel wall imaging (VWI) sequences are an emerging tool for the evaluation of cerebrovascular diseases. We performed VWI in medulloblastoma long-term survivors to screen for late sequelae of RCT.Twenty-two pediatric medulloblastoma survivors (mean age 25.8 years (10-53 years); 16.3 years (mean) post primary RCT (range 1-45 years)) underwent 2D VWI-MRI. Vessel wall thickening, contrast enhancement and luminal narrowing were analyzed. The findings were correlated with the patients' radiation protocols.Vessel wall changes were o…
