Abstract Swampy-rivulets Rivularia haematites (D.C.) Agardh stromatolites were collected from the same site on the Plateau de Langres (Chaugey, France) over a seven year period. Specimens were studied in thin sections, in culture media under varying conditions of temperature and illumination, and by scanning electron microscope (SEM) in order to investigate the processes of calcification and lamination. New SEM observations confirm the polycrystalline structure of the ‘lamellae’ reported by the authors and show that the crystals composing these lamellae are elongate and aligned in the same direction as the filaments linked by them. The objective of this chapter is to show how variation of strain intensity can be judged in thin section. Usually this kind of variation can best be observed in low-grade mylonites where the percentage of porphyroclasts decreases progressively with strain intensity. However, the percentage of matrix is highly dependent on mineralogical composition (e.g. quartz and biotite tend to convert to matrix readily). Compositional banding in gneiss can therefore result in mylonitic banding of apparent strain variation, which in fact only reflects variation in composition of the parent rock. Aim of this paper is the characterization of ancient hydraulic mortars from the roman water supply system of Thermae (I-II cent. A.D.), known as “Aqua Cornelia” and "Figurella" aqueducts, more than 10 kilometers long. Because of malfunctioning of the "Barratina" siphon, major changes in the original adduction system were realized in several steps. Mortar samples were taken from both channels lining materials and structural elements, in order to contribute to answer some questions about the construction phases of the aqueduct. AbstractThe histology of a femur of Plagiosuchus, a Middle Triassic temnospondyl amphibian, is described on the basis of two supplementary methods: classic thin sectioning and micro-CT scanning. In addition, the effectiveness of high-resolution micro-CT scanning for histological analysis is assessed. A classic, mid-shaft thin section of the femur was prepared, but prior to slicing two micro-CT scans were made. Rectal carcinomas are amongst the most common malignant tumours. The aim of this work was to determine whether high resolution CT with thin sections (1 mm) can provide satisfactory delineation of perirectal tumour infiltration. Correct determination of local tumour spread was possible in four out of nine patients and distinction between those tumours confined to the rectal wall and those infiltrating the perirectal tissues was possible in four out of eight patients.
