Global dynamical behaviors in a physical shallow water system

International audience; The theory of bifurcations of dynamical systems is used to investigate the behavior of travelling wave solutions in an entire family of shallow water wave equations. This family is obtained by a perturbative asymptotic expansion for unidirectional shallow water waves. According to the parameters of the system, this family can lead to different sets of known equations such as Camassa-Holm, Korteweg-de Vries, Degasperis and Procesi and several other dispersive equations of the third order. Measuring something that cannot be grasped – Reflections about Methodology in Elicitation of Spoken Competence

The focus of this article is on reflections about methodology and the methodical choices in empirical research into the role of consciousness in the acquisition of spoken competence in German as second or third foreign language. Seeing language as a complex, dynamic system, I want to show how learning fluctuates. I would like to demonstrate that there is a continuous fluctuation between nonlinearity and stability which depends on particular driving forces. These forces have to be captured by methods whose aim is to increase the certainty of data. These reflections were proved by a case that wants to demonstrate how a multi-methodical approach works in this direction.

Harmonic balance analysis of pull-in range and oscillatory behavior of third-order type 2 analog PLLs

The most important design parameters of each phase-locked loop (PLL) are the local and global stability properties, and the pull-in range. To extend the pull-in range, engineers often use type 2 PLLs. However, the engineering design relies on approximations which prevent a full exploitation of the benefits of type 2 PLLs. Using an exact mathematical model and relying on a rigorous mathematical thinking this problem is revisited here and the stability and pull-in properties of the third-order type 2 analog PLLs are determined. Tailoring Third-Harmonic Diffraction Efficiency by Hybrid Modes in High-Q Metasurfaces

Metasurfaces are versatile tools for manipulating light; however, they have received little attention as devices for the efficient control of nonlinearly diffracted light. Here, we demonstrate nonlinear wavefront control through third-harmonic generation (THG) beaming into diffraction orders with efficiency tuned by excitation of hybrid Mie-quasi-bound states in the continuum (BIC) modes in a silicon metasurface. Simultaneous excitation of the high-Q collective Mie-type modes and quasi-BIC modes leads to their hybridization and results in a local electric field redistribution. Third-harmonic generation in optical microfibers: From silica experiments to highly nonlinear glass prospects

International audience; Using optical microfibers, phase matching between different propagation modes allows for third-harmonic generation (THG). After detailing the relevant phase matching conditions and overlap integrals, we provide a comparison between THG effective efficiencies in silica and tellurite glasses. We also explain the relatively easy, wideband, conversion that we observe experimentally in silica glass microfibers, from 155 mu m to the green, by the geometry of the tapering region.
Non-linear optical spectra of excitons in polydiacetylene

Abstract Adding long-range Coulomb interactions to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model makes it possible to investigate excitonic states in conjugated polymers. Various characteristic features due to these states as well as due to the electron-hole continuum can be found in the calculated non-linear optical susceptibilities. In particular the electroabsorption spectrum and the third harmonic generation intensity and its dependence on the system size are examined. Using only moderate interaction strength, various experiments in polydiacetylene can be interpreted in a consistent way.
