Autofluorescence Imaging of the Skin Is an Objective Non-Invasive Technique for Diagnosing Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a rare multisystemic autosomal recessive connective tissue disease. In most cases, skin manifestations of PXE are the first to develop, followed later by severe ocular and cardiovascular complications. In our present study, in addition to dermoscopy, we introduced novel techniques, autofluorescence (AF) and diffuse reflectance (DR) imaging for the assessment of affected skin sites of five PXE patients. Centrifugal necrotic keratoacanthoma

Centrifugal necrotic keratoacanthoma is a quite rare variant of keratoacanthoma, with a locally aggressive behavior and no tendency to spontaneous involution. We report a typical case of the nasal-orbital region. Based on its clinical, histological and behavioral picture, centrifugal necrotic keratoacanthoma appears as variant of giant keratoacanthoma and can be regarded as an intermediate form in a spectrum where keratoacanthoma and overt squamous cell carcinoma represent the most benign and the most malignant end, respectively, as also highlighted by analogies between the two lesions recently reported in the field of molecular biology.

Introduction: The melanoacanthoma is a rare benign pigmented tumor, characterized by a fast radial growth and clinical behavior similar to melanoma. Color changes in oral mucosa and dermis are consequence of increased melanocyte activity as response to an irritant factor. There is a vast phenotypic variety. Nonepithelial skin tumors with multinucleated giant cells

Recognition of the different types of multinucleated giant cells in neoplastic and pseudotumoral lesions of the skin may be helpful in the differential diagnosis of these tumors. In this review, we will analyze the different types of multinucleated giant cells that can be found in nonepithelial cutaneous tumors and, more importantly, the clinicopathological context in which they are found. Tenosynovial giant cell tumour (localized type) is a tumour of tendon sheaths and interphalangeal joints, affecting the digits and arising from the synovium. It is characterized by a proliferation of mononuclear cells and osteoclast-like polykaryocytes. Its propagation to the skin is an exceptional event, which can take place either in localized form in the fingertips (localized type) or in the rare diffuse form called giant cell tumour of the tendon sheath (diffuse type). Orbital-free energy functional for electrons in two dimensions

We derive a non-empirical, orbital-free density functional for the total energy of interacting electrons in two dimensions. The functional consists of a local formula for the interaction energy, where we follow the lines introduced by Parr for three-dimensional systems [R. G. Parr, J. Phys. Chem. 92, 3060 (1988)], and the Thomas-Fermi approximation for the kinetic energy. The freedom from orbitals and from the Hartree integral makes the proposed approximation numerically highly efficient. The total energies obtained for confined two-dimensional systems are in a good agreement with the standard local-density approximation within density-functional theory, and considerably more accurate than …

A recent paper [J. Schirmer and A. Dreuw, Phys. Rev A. 75, 022513 (2007)] challenges exact time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) on several grounds. We explain why these criticisms are either irrelevant or incorrect, and that TDDFT is both formally exact and predictive.
